Largest Steroids Bust in U.S. history takes place over prior weekend

Send News
*UPDATED*

Opporation ‘Raw deal’ was a coordinated effort lead by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency to bring down an underground network of steroid distributers as written by Josh Peter in an article for Yahoo! Sports.

Some notes from the article…

Most of the raids took place in the United States, and the DEA called the steroids crackdown the largest in U.S. history. DEA offices in New York and San Diego provided lead guidance during an investigation that resulted in 124 arrests and seizures at 56 labs across the country. Investigators also seized 71 weapons, 27 pill presses, 25 vehicles and three boats, but the coveted item was illegal drugs, and the DEA said it intercepted a staggering quantity.

Just how does one define the phrase staggering amount?

Investigators hauled in countless bags and boxes loaded with steroids that have a street value potentially exceeding $50 million, Payne said. The stockpile included 11.4 million doses of steroids, which based on the 0.5 milliliter per dose used by the DEA for calculations, amounts to about 570,000 vials that each hold 10 milliliters.

Payne said he had no figures for the amount of HGH and other drugs seized in an operation that involved the Food and Drug Administration, the U.S. Postal Inspection Service, the FBI, the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement and U.S. National Drug Intelligence Center.

Given that the street value of the steroids alone is over $50 million and given that there were a lot more drugs seized, I’d say that the phrase “staggering amount” fits more than appropriately.

One other thing to consider is that’s just what was seized in the United States, there were other countries involved and the article is unclear as to what if anything was seized outside of the United States or what role these other countries played. This article from the AP sheds more light on the international aspect
The other countries listed as taking part in opporation ‘Raw Deal’ are:
  1. United States: (26 states)
  2. China
  3. Mexico
  4. Canada
  5. Belgium
  6. Australia
  7. Germany
  8. Denmark
  9. Sweden
  10. Thailand

In addition to steroids and HGH, the operation targeted Insulin Growth Factor and underground trafficking of ancillary and counterfeit medications. Other drugs seized included cocaine, marijuana, Ecstasy, painkillers, anti-anxiety medications and Viagra.

I could make a joke about that last one, but my objective is to use a serious tone in this report.

You can read the entire article which contains a lot of good information: here

Believe it or not, but given the size of this raid you probably should, there is a connection between this and the Signature Pharmacy scandal that has already done a number on some high-profile athletes. Cina had become the major supplier of the necessary ingredients for steroids and HGH after the feds cracked down on Mexico a couple of years ago.
So what does this mean exactly? It is hard to say just how deep this will go and how the sports world is going to be impacted. The article claims that the feds are putting together a database of buyers from this underground network and that it could run in to the hundreds of thousands of names. Now with a database that large it would be incredibly naïve to believe that some of those names won’t be pro athletes especially given the nature of the drugs seized.
It is unknown whether the NFL, Major League Baseball and the other pro sports leagues will be able to access the database to discover any of their athletes connection but the article does indicate that the DEA may be looking to chat with people who’s name appears on the list.
A couple of interesting quotes from Dave Meltzer of the wrestling observer in his write-up on the story.

A key thing is that it has long been rumored top athletes have gotten their stuff from China, and the Chinese government cooperated.

In July, word got around the athletic community, as told to us by one prominent pro wrestler, that China was being shut down and the supply of HGH was down.

All I can think is that this is going to be a far reaching scandal for all sports and that we’re about to find out more than ever how deep the drug culture in sports really is as compared to what the public perceives it to be.

Congressman Cliff Stearns Layeth the Smack Down on WWE Drug Policy

Send News

I have determined that Congressman Cliff Stearns (R) Florida is a great man.

He lets WWE have it in this
New York Daily News Article

The greatness of some of these quotes...

By moving to suspend 10 of its performers for possible steroid violations Thursday, the WWE proved one thing: "The WWE does not have a drug policy that's worth a flip," U.S. Rep. Cliff Stearns (R-Fla.) told the Daily News yesterday. "Because the WWE didn't catch them, the district attorney in (Albany) New York investigated and found them."

It is kind of hard to argue with that one, but in the WWE's defense on one of these issues, it isn't like there's a test that exists for GH now anyway. But, the other stuff...

"If those are all from Signature Pharmacy, I'd like to know how many other pharmacies might be involved," Stearns said from his home in Florida.

That's a more than fair question, and is one definitely worth asking. We only know about the one because it was busted, but it is a little hard for me to personally believe that this is the one pharmacy and these the only guys who got anything.

Stearns said he wants the WWE to fully explain how it tests performers, since it obviously isn't catching too many on its own.

"We asked them for their testing information; what they came back with was not sufficient," Stearns said. "We do not have a copy (of the actual testing policy). We didn't understand whether it was random, what the threshold (level for drugs) was, whether any of these wrestlers were getting post-dated prescriptions after the fact."

The professional wrestling industry is going to get owned so bad when hearings are held. TNA is screwed for having less of a drug policy than Combat-Hooligans.com but it will be ok for them because this defense strategy never fails and you can Watch it in all its glory The WWE is going to get owned for being the industry leader for so long with a big disregard for the culture that its industry perpetuates.

If you happen to be a Staff member for anyone on either of the 2 committees looking in to this issue and you come across this post while researching and gathering information, two things. First of all, hello and I commend your efforts. Second of all, take a look at the following question, maybe punch it up a bit but I would love for Vince McMahon to have to deal with this.

Here's the question I would love to see one of the committee members ask Vince McMahon during a hearing:

Mr. McMahon, does the fact that you referred to the members of this committee as a bunch of "Barney Fife's" indicate that you think an investigation in to the level of drug use and abuse in your industry and its impact on the long-term health of its performers is something to be trivialized in a storyline and mocked on National Television?

His answer to the question asked in that way can't even be the crutch of "Well, it was in character and not how I really feel." The core issue of that question is why the WWE felt the need to trivialize a serious matter such as a congressional investigation in to drug abuse industry wide.

I've got to give a hat tip for pointing this article out to me to Karl Stern.com

Batista responds to Signature Pharmacy allegations

From his site:
To my fans and friends:
I categorically deny a report on ESPN.com, and repeated by other media outlets, that I am or ever have been a customer of Signature Pharmacy of Orlando, an on-line pharmacy company that is a target of an investigation by the Albany, New York District Attorney's Office.

I am being tested regularly by the WWE, and I am in full compliance with the WWE Wellness Program.

I regret the inaccurate reporting, and I will do all I can in the future to stop any publication or anyone from making such false accusations.

Wade Wilson who had an 18-year NFL career for multiple teams, primarily as a backup received both HGH and steroids from Signature from 2004-2006 according to this Newsday Article

The article suggests that more names are going to come out eventually, which is something that I've velieved for awhile now. I also believe that this goes beyond the WWE and the NFL and will be hitting other sports as time passes.

I have deamed the scandal to be newsworthy enough across all lines to devote coverage to it which extends beyond the WWE in to other sports which are not regularly covered on our site.

Updated:
Wilson suspended for 5 games He said he took the drugs to improve his quality of life after suffering from diabetes for 20 years.

If that's true, then why did he need to get this stuff from an internet pharmacy in the first place?

Phil Astin's lawyer says that Benoit had a hormone condition that warrented large amount of steroid use

Send News

The less you think about it, the more it will make sense.

ATLANTA - A lawyer for Chris Benoit’s personal doctor suggested in court papers the former pro wrestler had a hormone disorder that permitted the amount
of steroids he was prescribed before killing his wife, son and himself in June.

In a motion to suppress evidence filed Monday, Dr. Phil Astin’s attorney, Manny Arora, said a federal agent failed to tell a judge who issued search warrants
in the case about the legitimate uses of steroids.

Arora wrote that if the government had consulted a hormone disorder specialist, it would have learned that “the amount of medication in question was not
excessive and would be medically appropriate based on the medical condition of Mr. Benoit.”

The court filing did not elaborate on Benoit's condition. A spokesman for the U.S. attorney's office declined to comment.

Authorities have said Astin prescribed a 10-month supply of anabolic steroids to Benoit every three to four weeks between May 2006 and May 2007.

Anabolic steroids were found in Benoit's home, and tests showed Benoit had roughly 10 times the normal level of testosterone in his system when he died.
Investigators have not given a motive for the killings, but the question of whether steroids played a role has lingered.

Testosterone can be used as part of hormone replacement therapy. Some athletes also have been known to use steroids to enhance their performance.

Astin has pleaded not guilty to federal charges of improperly prescribing painkillers and other drugs to two patients other than Benoit. Federal prosecutors
plan a superseding indictment with new charges, but haven't said when they will act.

The district attorney overseeing the death investigation has said Benoit strangled his wife with a cord, used a choke hold to strangle his 7-year-old
son, then placed Bibles next to the bodies and hanged himself on a piece of exercise equipment in his Fayetteville home the weekend of June 22.

Astin is free on bail, but must remain in his home except under limited circumstances. A pretrial conference is scheduled for Sept. 18.

That's one hell of a condition.

I'm not even going to ask the obvious question of how exactly this hormone condition came to be, I'll leave that up to Dr. Nick Riviera over at WWE Wellness central and Lyonel Huts attorney to Phil Astin and Pacman Jones.
