MUNDINE TO DEFEND V JOSE CLAVERO!

Send News and Event Results

While WBA “super” and WBC super middleweight champion Mikkel Kessler gets set to unify the 168 alphabet belts with the bench mark of the division, WBO/IBF
and Ring Magazine champ Joe Calzaghe on Saturday night, WBA “regular” title holder Anthony Mundine (29-3, 22 KO's) announced yesterday he would defend
against limited Argentine Jose Clavero (27-5-1, 13 KO's) at the Sydney Entertainment Center on December 10.

Mundine, 32, is hoping to fight the Calzaghe-Kessler winner in 2008. He is currently battling to regain sight in his left eye following an infection which
occurred when he cleaned a contact lens with his mouth. There is also talk of a rematch with Danny Green in Perth next year. Green faces WBA champion
Stipe Drews for the light heavyweight title in Perth on December 16.

New 'BA number 15, Clavero, also 32, who won the WBC Mundo Hispanic title in 2002, has inside the distance defeats to Sam Soliman and Paul Briggs on
previous trips down under. He was especially disappointing against Briggs in Brisbane last year which was officially put down as a disqualification loss.
He last fought in February, a draw over ten with fellow Argentine Ruben Acosta, felled by Mundine in four rounds last November.

WBC Press Release: Night of Champions Cancun Dec 15

Send News and Event Results

Edwin Valero, Jorge Linares Headline "Night of Champions: Iron Fists" on December 15 A massive night of boxing is shaping up in Cancun, Mexico on Saturday,
December 15, 2007 when WBA Super Featherweight Champion Edwin Valero and WBC Featherweight Champion Jorge Linares co-headline a high octane fight card
billed as "Night of Champions: Iron Fists", promoted by Jose Gomez with support by the Mexican state of Qunitana Roo and it's Governor, Licenciado Felix
Gonzalez Canto.

This remarkable night of fights will be held at Cancun's historic bullfighting ring Plaza de Toros and will be televised on Pay Per View to over 100 countries.

Topping the bill in Cancun is the hardest punching fighter on the planet, WBA Super Featherweight Champion Edwin "Dinamita" Valero, world record holder
of consecutive first round knockouts. Valero, 22-0 (22), stopped his first 19 opponents in the first frame but needed two rounds to turn the trick against
Genaro Trazancos in March of 2006 before meeting the WBA titlist at the time, Vincente Mosquera in August of that year. "Dinamita" had Mosquera down
twice in the first round but had to climb off the canvas himself in the third before finishing off the champion for good in the tenth round. After retaining
the WBA crown with a first round KO of Michael Lozada, Valero is coming off a hard fought sixth round stoppage of Japanese and OPBF titlist Nobuhito Honmo
in Tokyo this past May.

Facing Valero in Cancun on December 15 will be the undefeated Juan Carlos Salgado, 18-0-1 (13), of Mexico City, who is coming off impressive wins during
the last year over veterans Ivan Valle and Marcos Licona.

Co-headliner of the bill, 22 year old Jorge Linares, 24-0 (15), also known as "The Golden Boy", secured the vacant WBC Featherweight title by upsetting
former longtime WBC 122 lb champion Oscar Larios via a shocking tenth round stoppage at the Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas this past July. Larios exerted
tremendous pressure on his young adversary but Linares showed great composure in weathering the storm and making the Mexican warrior pay for his aggressiveness
with blazing combinations and severe left hooks to the body that repeatedly rocked the ex-super bantam titlist. But the man from Guadalajara refused
to back down, pressing the fight until he was hammered to the canvas by right hands from Linares, forcing the end of the fight in the tenth. In his very
first defense of the WBC title, on December 15 in Cancun, Linares will be put to the test by hardened veteran Gamaliel "El Platano" Diaz of Nezahualcoyotl,
Mexico. Diaz, 22-6-2 (9), won a WBC Title Eliminator in July, posting a split decision victory over previously unbeaten Elio Rojas and the 26 year old
featherweight is best known for the pair of contests he split with current two-time IBF Champion Robert Guerrero. Both Linares and Valero are originally
from Venezuela but are based in Japan under the wing of Akihiko Honda's very successful Teiken Promotions and are expecting very tough fights in Cancun
from their proud Mexican opponents. Also on the card is a thrilling WBC Featherweight Eliminator between Japan's Naoki Matsuda, 28-7-3 (11), and Mexico's
Rodolfo Lopez, 20-4-1 (14), who will be meeting each other for the second time. In their first clash this past March, Matsuda was floored in the first
round but roared back to KO former WBC Champion Lopez in the fifth after a terrific slugfest. Rounding out the bill are ex-WBC Featherweight Champion
Guty Espadas Jr, lightweight Pipino Cuevas Jr., featherweight Wilfredo Vazquez Jr., and featherweight Moises Perez. Promociones Jose Gomez presents
"Night of Champions: Iron Fists" at Plaza de Toros in Cancun, Quintana Roo, Mexico on December 15, 2007 featuring WBA Super Featherweight Champion Edwin
Valero defending against Juan Carlos Salgado and WBC Featherweight Champion Jorge Linares defending against Gamaliel Diaz. Ticket and Pay Per View information
will be released soon.

Send News and Event Results

Photos: Jan Sanders/Goossen Tutor Promotions For Showtime

Calvin Brock (left) and Eddie Chambers square off and then face off after Thursday's weigh-in at Tacoma, Washington.

The once-beaten Brock (31-1, 23 KOs), who weighed 241 pounds, and the undefeated Chambers (29-0, 16 KOs), who tipped scale at 213 1/2, collide in a 12-round IBF elimination fight in the main event Friday on the 100th telecast of ShoBox: The New Generation on SHOWTIME (11 p.m. ET/PT, delayed on the west coast).

In Friday's co-feature, Jose Lopez (21-2, 13 KOs) will be opposed by Tyrone Harris (21-3, 14 KOs) in an eight-round lightweight bout. Lopez weighed the division-limit 135 pounds Thursday while Harris weighed 133 1/4.

FINAL QUOTES AND WEIGHTS

“SHOBOX: THE NEW GENERATION’’

Friday, Nov. 2; Telecast Begins at 11 p.m. ET/PT

One day before a world championship doubleheader (Juan Manuel Marquez vs. Rocky Juarez and Robert Guerrero vs. Martin Honorio) on SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING, ShoBox: The New Generation will celebrate its 100th telecast with one of the most significant heavyweight fights in the series’ distinguished six-year history.

The heavyweight “Battle for the Ages” will pit “Fast” Eddie Chambers (29-0, 16 KOs) against Calvin “The Boxing Banker” Brock (31-1, 23 KOs) in an International Boxing Federation (IBF) heavyweight title eliminator live on SHOWTIME at 11 p.m. ET/PT (delayed on the west coast). The winner of the 12-round bout will face 2004 Olympic Games gold medalist Alexander Povetkin for the right to challenge IBF heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko.

In the co-feature of a Friday twinbill presented by Goossen Tutor Promotions and Main Events from the Emerald Queen Casino in Tacoma, Wash., Jose Lopez (21-2, 13 KOs) will face Tyrone Harris (21-3, 14 KOs) in an eight-round lightweight bout.

NOTE: THURSDAY’S WEIGHTS – Chambers 213 ½ pounds, Brock 241; Lopez weighed 135, Harris 133 1/4.

EDDIE CHAMBERS

“When the opportunity to fight Brock popped up, I jumped at the chance. To be a fight or two from fighting for the world title is really exciting and what it is all about. I am totally enjoying all of this.

“I have a lot of respect for Calvin and expect a pretty tough fight. But because I respect him doesn’t mean I am intimidated.

“Calvin is good at a lot of things and I expect to see him at his best Friday. The only fights I watched of his were when he was at his best.

“But he is not all that fast and that is one of the things I expect to take advantage of and will try to exploit. He may try and jump on me early, but I am ready for that or anything.

“I know if I pick my spots, give him lots of angles, fight smart, throw him off and disrupt his timing, I’ll be OK. I’ve had the best training, am totally focused and definitely ready to fight.

“We actually were supposed to fight once before, when we were both like 8-0. But it didn’t make it any sense for either of us to fight at that time. The time wasn’t right then. It is now.’’

CALVIN BROCK

“I am not overlooking or taking Chambers for granted because I respect him as a fighter. But I really don’t see how he is going to beat me. He is undefeated, but I am not totally impressed. I thought his fight with Dominick Guinn was a whole lot closer than the judges had it.

“To get back into the running for another world title fight is, of course, a great thing. When I first heard about an IBF tournament, I naturally wanted to be part of it.

“You are going to see a different Calvin Brock than the one who fought Klitschko. I have worked really hard for this fight, but unlike the Klitschko fight, this time I am not overtrained. I peaked three weeks too early and was stale against Klitschko. It’s been a tough camp, but a good one. Having the great Pernell Whitaker working with me has really helped, too.

“I feel I am coming up to my best fight. You are going to see me faster and lighter on my feet. I will be working the jab, letting my punches go with both hands. Condition wise, I feel better at this weight than I did at 225. He is supposed to be quick. I think I am quicker.

“I am really looking forward to having a great night on Friday.’’

J.Myer press release: Wilson v Mirovic revenge or repeat?

Send News and Event Results

JAMIE MYER FIGHT PROMOTIONS PRESENT : REPEAT OR REVENGE?!

FRIDAY NIGHT NOVEMBER 2ND AT SOUTHPORT RSL

After months of negotiations Queensland's leading promoter Jamie Myer has secured the Australian heavyweight title clash between long time rivals Colin Wilson and Bob Mirovic.

The ten round grudge match will take place on Friday night November 2nd at the Southport RSL. This will be the fifth fight between veterans, two of the toughest and most proven heavyweights in the Southern Hemisphere over the past ten years.

With Wilson yet to beat his nemeses and with his title on the line, the Central Queensland coal miner will be putting everything into gaining revenge, after challenging for the IBF Inter Continental Title in Germany this year.

Mirovic, who had an epic battle for the WBF world heavyweight title with American Rob Calloway on the Gold Coast in 2005, recently lost a decision to former IBF world champion Frans Botha in South Africa. He won't be taking Wilson lightly, as he knows the champion will be out for revenge, and the NSW icon know as the “Big Bear” has been on the Gold Coast this week sparring with former Aussie champion Nathan Briggs.

Co headlining the November 2nd card will be talented junior welterweight Lance Gostelow (Australia # 3). Melbourne based Gostelow, who was born in North Queensland, will be coming up against Sydney based Filipino Junmar Dulog (# 5 Australia) over eight rounds.

Noosa's Israel Kani, (Australian number 6) will go at it with Gold Coaster William Hardcore Hadlow, (Australian number 8) in an eight round middleweight battle, Robina's Nicholas Svidas junior faces Southport's Les Piper for the state super middleweight title also over eight rounds.

Friday's ShoBox Results Release: T.J. Wilson, Chuy Rodriguez Triumph

Send News and Event Results

WILSON SCORES 15 SECOND-FIRST ROUND KO OVER WALKER,
RODRIGUEZ OUTPOINTS PREVIOUSLY UNBEATEN LOWTHER
_____________________________________________________________________________________

Friday, Oct. 19, 2007, at 11 p.m. ET/PT on SHOWTIME
Raley Field, Sacramento, California
SACRAMENTO, Calif. (Oct. 19, 2007) – It was over almost before it started.
In a stunning upset, T.J. Wilson captured the International Boxing Association (IBA) Continental Americas heavyweight title with an unpopular, controversial
15-second, first-round knockout over previously undefeated Travis Walker Friday in the main event on ShoBox: The New Generation.
The amazing run of streaking, vastly improved Jesus “Chuy” Rodriguez continued in the co-feature when he won his eighth in a row with a convincing, unanimous
eight-round decision over previously unbeaten Omri Lowther in a good-action junior welterweight match.
The doubleheader, held outside at Raley Field, was promoted by Duva Boxing in association with Goossen Tutor Promotions. It aired on SHOWTIME at
11 p.m. ET/PT (delayed on the west coast).
A mere seconds after the opening bell, Wilson backed Walker into a corner and began delivering punches with both hands. At least a couple connected solidly
and seemed to stun Walker, who did not once attempt to retaliate, or even raise a glove. He did not land a punch.
Moments later, the referee, Raul Caiz Sr., stepped between the boxers and waved off the fight.
“He dropped his hands. His shoulders dropped and he did not try to defend himself,’’ said Caiz, a veteran referee and the third man in numerous world
title fights across the years. “I hated to do it. No one wants to see a fight end like that, especially so early on. But it is my job to protect the
fighter.’’
Naturally, Wilson (12-1, 8 KOs), of Atlanta, agreed with the referee’s actions while Walker (25-1-1, 19 KOs), of Houston, Texas, by way of Tallahassee,

Fla., thought it was, well, a travesty.
“He was ready to go,” said Wilson, a six-foot-six inch, 282-pound southpaw who was two inches taller than Walker and outweighed him by 42 pounds. “He
just folded up in the corner. His head wobbled.
“If the referee doesn’t stop it, Walker is going down and getting knocked out anyway. I was not going to stop throwing punches.’’
Making his second start since July 2004 and first since March 24, 2007, Wilson said he would welcome a rematch but would prefer a shot at a top-10 contender.
“I really want to thank SHOWTIME for this opportunity,’’ he said. “They gave me a chance to show what I could do. I said I was going to apply intense
pressure and I did. You saw what happened.
“Since I just beat the guy in 15 seconds, I would like to try and progress in my career and fight somebody in the top 10. But if the price is right, I’d
fight
Walker again.’’
Walker, who was making his third appearance on SHOWTIME, vehemently protested the ref’s decision to halt the proceedings. The boxer still was in disbelief
several minutes later.
“You don’t stop a fight, a championship fight, like that,” an agitated Walker said. “He caught me with a couple shots, but I was never hurt. It was only
the first round, a feeling out round. We knew he was going to come out and shoot his wad. That was the only shot he had at winning.
“This is unbelievable. I definitely want to fight Wilson again.’’
Rodriguez (17-2, 5 KOs), of Salinas, Calif., performed intelligently and stayed poised throughout en route to triumphing by the scores of 79-73 twice and
78-74. There were no knockdowns.
“I am content with the win, but I am not entirely satisfied,’’ he said. “I pushed the fight but I think I could have been a lot busier. But it was great
fighting on SHOWTIME and having the fans behind me like they were.’’
A third cousin to the legendary Sugar Ray Robinson, Lowther (9-1, 8 KOs), of Atlanta, Ga., had his stablemate, undefeated World Boxing Organization (WBO)
welterweight champion Paul Williams, in his corner Friday. It didn’t help.
“I won’t make any excuses,’’ Lowther said. “I knew what I was getting into when I took the fight. Fighting a guy in his hometown is not easy. My only
complaint is that the referee warned Rodriguez for hitting behind the head something like six times but never took away a point.’’
Nick Charles (blow-by-blow) and Steve Farhood (analyst) called the action from ringside. The executive producer of ShoBox is Gordon Hall with Richard
Gaughan producing and Rick Phillips directing.
Friday’s bouts will re-air as follows:
DAY CHANNEL
Saturday, Oct. 20, at Midnight ET/PT SHOTOO
Monday, Oct. 22, at 10 p.m. ET/PT SHO EXTREME
Tuesday, Oct. 23, at Midnight ET/PT SHO EXTREME
Thursday, Oct. 25, at 11 p.m. ET/PT SHOTOO
Friday’s telecast was the first of three consecutive ShoBox presentations that will feature promising heavyweight prospects.
The next “ShoBox” telecast on Friday, Nov. 2 (SHOWTIME, 11 p.m. ET/PT, delayed on the west coast) will be the 100th in a popular, critically acclaimed
series that began in July 2001. The main event will pit undefeated “Fast” Eddie Chambers against Calvin “The Boxing Banker” Brock in an International
Boxing Federation (IBF) title elimination bout.

Friday's ShoBox Results Release: Unbeatens Perez, Bey Win

YONNHY PEREZ STAYS UNBEATEN
WITH KO OVER ALEXANDER FEDOROV,
UNDEFEATED MICKEY BEY JR. KNOCKS OUT CASTULO GONZALEZ
_____________________________________________________________________________________

Friday, Oct. 4, 2007, at 11 p.m. ET/PT on SHOWTIME

Omega Products International, Corona, California

CORONA, Calif. (Oct. 4, 2007) – Yonnhy Perez fights better than he spells.

The talented, undefeated bantamweight with the unusually spelled first name – it is pronounced “Johnny” – improved to 14-0 with 11 knockouts with a dominant, impressive fourth-round stoppage over comebacking Alexander Fedorov (18-4-1, 10 KOs) Friday on “ShoBox: The New Generation.’’

In the co-feature, former amateur champion and 2004 United States Olympian, promising Mickey Bey Jr. (9-0, six KOs), registered two knockdowns en route to scoring a second-round knockout over Castulo Gonzalez (9-4, three KOs).

The doubleheader, held at an outdoor venue at Omega Products International, was promoted by Gary Shaw Productions, LLC, in association with Thompson Boxing Promotions. It aired on SHOWTIME at 11 p.m. ET/PT (delayed on the west coast).

The five-foot-seven-inch Perez, 28, of Santa Fe Springs, Calif., by way of Cartagena, Colombia, is big for a bantamweight and his size, strength and punching power were too much for Fedorov, who also had to deal with jet lag after arriving in the United States seven days ago from his native Russia.

“There’s still work to be done and I know I can get better, especially when it comes to cutting off the ring. But I feel I’m ready to step up and take on any of the top guys in the division,’’ said Perez, who won all the rounds on the three judges’ scorecards before the fight was stopped 44 seconds into the fourth.

“Learning-wise, this was a good fight for me and it being on television made it even better. I am very happy, extremely satisfied. The guy was tough, awkward and moved a lot. But I know I can hit, and if I can hurt an opponent, I can finish him. So I am not surprised the referee stopped it when he did.

A four-time Colombian national amateur champion, Perez was cut over the left eye in the third round, but it was not a factor. “I was never hurt,’’ he said. “The best is yet to come.’’

Fedorov, 30, of Ekaterinburg, Russia, was making his initial start before a paying audience in 18 months, but the layoff was not a major factor.

“More than anything, I just didn’t feel like myself in there,” he said. “I thought a week was enough time to get acclimated but it was not. Everything was off. I never felt like I usually do.

“I give Perez credit; he is a good fighter, but I am a much better fighter than I showed tonight.’’

Bey, of Cleveland, Ohio, gave his promoter, the birthday boy, Gary Shaw, a nice present as he turned what many figured to be his toughest test as a pro into one of his easiest.

After a mostly competitive opening round, the up-and-coming super featherweight twice dropped Gonzalez with left hooks and had him on the verge of going down again before the ref stepped in and halted maters at 1:41 of the second.

“For me, winning by knockout is my favorite thing to do in the ring so tonight was fun,’’ Bey, 24, said. “I was ready for eight hard rounds because he was supposed to be tough and have a great chin, but I caught him with two perfect left hooks.

“I think, now, you have to respect my power, but if you don’t, that’s OK, too, because eventually you will. I am ready to fight again. I hope it happens again really soon and on SHOWTIME.’’

Gonzalez, 29, of Lynn, Mass., by way of Puerto San Jose Escuintla, Guatemala, could never get into a rhythm.

“I felt OK in the first round, but I got nailed in the second with a good shot,’’ he said. “I think I have too much heart for my own good because rather than clinch and try to gather and compose myself, I continued to try and fight.

“I feel terrible about it, but I can’t argue with the referee’s decision to stop the fight. This just wasn’t my night to shine.’’

Nick Charles (blow-by-blow) and Steve Farhood (color analyst) called the action from ringside. The executive producer of ShoBox is Gordon Hall with Richard Gaughan producing and Rick Phillips directing.

Friday’s bouts will re-air as follows:

The next “ShoBox” telecast is Friday, Oct. 19 (SHOWTIME, 11 p.m. ET/PT, delayed on the west coast). In the main event, undefeated heavyweight Travis Walker (25-0, 19 KOs) of Tallahassee, Fla., faces T.J. Walker (11-1, 7 KOs) of Newark, N.J. Once-beaten junior welterweight Patrick Lopez (11-1, 9 KOs) of Londonderry, N.H., takes on Jesus “Chuy” Rodriguez (16-2, 5 KOs) of Salinas, Calif., in the eight-round co-feature.

Tomorrow/Saturday, Oct. 6, on SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING, Sam Peter defends his WBC interim heavyweight title against Jameel McCline on SHOWTIME (10 p.m. ET/PT, delayed on the west coast).

Bob Arum: Kelly Pavlik's win big blow to the UFC

Send News

Yes, Bob Airhead is talking again and as per usual he's saying things that are pretty stupid.

He gives some comments on what Pavlik's victory this weekend over Jermain Taylor means to the sport of boxing and as usual he misses the point.

This interview with BoxingScene.com quotes Arum as saying that Pavlik will revive boxing in the Midwest and that will take away from the fanbase of the UFC and bla bla bla bla bla.

Time will eventually prove how wrong Arum is, yes it will prove how wrong he is not whether he is right or wrong.

I'm working with no sleep so I'll just say that Sam Caplan over at FiveOuncesofPain has more and makes points I'm too tired to get in to right now.

Largest Steroids Bust in U.S. history takes place over prior weekend

Send News
*UPDATED*

Opporation ‘Raw deal’ was a coordinated effort lead by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency to bring down an underground network of steroid distributers as written by Josh Peter in an article for Yahoo! Sports.

Some notes from the article…

Most of the raids took place in the United States, and the DEA called the steroids crackdown the largest in U.S. history. DEA offices in New York and San Diego provided lead guidance during an investigation that resulted in 124 arrests and seizures at 56 labs across the country. Investigators also seized 71 weapons, 27 pill presses, 25 vehicles and three boats, but the coveted item was illegal drugs, and the DEA said it intercepted a staggering quantity.

Just how does one define the phrase staggering amount?

Investigators hauled in countless bags and boxes loaded with steroids that have a street value potentially exceeding $50 million, Payne said. The stockpile included 11.4 million doses of steroids, which based on the 0.5 milliliter per dose used by the DEA for calculations, amounts to about 570,000 vials that each hold 10 milliliters.

Payne said he had no figures for the amount of HGH and other drugs seized in an operation that involved the Food and Drug Administration, the U.S. Postal Inspection Service, the FBI, the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement and U.S. National Drug Intelligence Center.

Given that the street value of the steroids alone is over $50 million and given that there were a lot more drugs seized, I’d say that the phrase “staggering amount” fits more than appropriately.

One other thing to consider is that’s just what was seized in the United States, there were other countries involved and the article is unclear as to what if anything was seized outside of the United States or what role these other countries played. This article from the AP sheds more light on the international aspect
The other countries listed as taking part in opporation ‘Raw Deal’ are:
  1. United States: (26 states)
  2. China
  3. Mexico
  4. Canada
  5. Belgium
  6. Australia
  7. Germany
  8. Denmark
  9. Sweden
  10. Thailand

In addition to steroids and HGH, the operation targeted Insulin Growth Factor and underground trafficking of ancillary and counterfeit medications. Other drugs seized included cocaine, marijuana, Ecstasy, painkillers, anti-anxiety medications and Viagra.

I could make a joke about that last one, but my objective is to use a serious tone in this report.

You can read the entire article which contains a lot of good information: here

Believe it or not, but given the size of this raid you probably should, there is a connection between this and the Signature Pharmacy scandal that has already done a number on some high-profile athletes. Cina had become the major supplier of the necessary ingredients for steroids and HGH after the feds cracked down on Mexico a couple of years ago.
So what does this mean exactly? It is hard to say just how deep this will go and how the sports world is going to be impacted. The article claims that the feds are putting together a database of buyers from this underground network and that it could run in to the hundreds of thousands of names. Now with a database that large it would be incredibly naïve to believe that some of those names won’t be pro athletes especially given the nature of the drugs seized.
It is unknown whether the NFL, Major League Baseball and the other pro sports leagues will be able to access the database to discover any of their athletes connection but the article does indicate that the DEA may be looking to chat with people who’s name appears on the list.
A couple of interesting quotes from Dave Meltzer of the wrestling observer in his write-up on the story.

A key thing is that it has long been rumored top athletes have gotten their stuff from China, and the Chinese government cooperated.

In July, word got around the athletic community, as told to us by one prominent pro wrestler, that China was being shut down and the supply of HGH was down.

All I can think is that this is going to be a far reaching scandal for all sports and that we’re about to find out more than ever how deep the drug culture in sports really is as compared to what the public perceives it to be.
