Lots of New for CZW "CHOOSING SIDES" on 10/13! The Butcher Returns! And Whose Side Are YOU On?
Sep 24, 2007 • posted by Ed O'Mac
Combat Zone Wrestling presents "CHOOSING SIDES"on Saturday Night, October 13th, live from the historic New Alhambra Arena at 7:30 PM in South Philadelphia. For directions, card information, and information on CZW's roster, log onto CZWrestling.com.

Already Signed:

MBA Vs. CZW - The Naptown Dragons (Scotty Vortekz & "Diehard" Dustin Lee) Vs. "The Psycho Shooter" Drake Younger & A Partner To Be Chosen Before 10/13
CZW World Tag Team Titles - Team AnDrew (c) Vs. Niles Young & Derek Frazier (with Noel Harlow)

Also Appearing at "CHOOSING SIDES": The Necro Butcher, UVU Champion Brain Damage, CZW Iron Man Champion "The Lariat" DJ Hyde, Maven Bentley, "Mr. Insanity" Toby Klein, CZW Jr. Heavyweight Champion Danny Havoc, J.C. Bailey, The Olsen Twins, Cheech, Brodie Lee, CZW World Champion Ruckus, "The 1-Hit Wonder" Cloudy, "The Black Jesus" Sabian, and many more to be named!

"Mr. Insanity" Toby Klein Coming For Revenge at "CHOOSING SIDES", And Isn't Coming Alone...
Former CZW Iron Man Champion "Mr. Insanity" Toby Klein is coming to South Philadelphia with one goal in mind: to bludgeon each and every member of the Maven Bentley Association. Last month, Klein lost the Iron Man Championship to the now 2-time champ, "The Lariat" DJ Hyde, the most despised member of Maven's faction. The decision to not allow Klein to participate in the UVU Tournament (won by Brain Damage), as well as Bentley's decision to not grant Klein an automatic rematch (something DJ Hyde was given) has pissed off the bad man from The Highlands, and he has made his decision for the upcoming "CHOOSING SIDES" event.

Toby Klein CHOOSES DEATH. The Necro Butcher, Klein's teammate in Tough Crazy Bastards, is also headed to Philadelphia, and the two have demanded that Bentley select which members of the MBA will be ready for them in either singles or tag team action. Necro's return to CZW will no doubt be an eventful one as the Road to Cage of Death IX rolls on, the TCB hit South Philly, and the MBA looks for an answer!

"The Feel-Good Tag Team of The Decade" Returns At CZW "CHOOSING SIDES"...The Olsen Twins!
Jimmy & Colin - The Olsen Twins Are Back in CZW! These two, who both nearly won the Chri$ Ca$h Memorial Battle Royal, and have been tearing up the tag team scene everywhere they compete, are ready to make a name for themselves in Combat Zone Wrestling. Word has it they're confident that they can stand up to any of CZW's top teams! You've seen them in action in a battle royal, now check out The Olsen Twins as they tear it up in tag team competition at CZW "CHOOSING SIDES" on October 13th!

J.C. Bailey Makes His Philadelphia CZW Return at CZW "CHOOSING SIDES"
Multiple-time former UVU Champion and World Tag Team Champion J.C. Bailey makes his Philadelphia return to Combat Zone Wrestling at CZW "CHOOSING SIDES". After the events of "TOD: Fast Forward", it seems Bailey has decided he is 100% CZW and wants nothing to do with Maven Bentley's faction. Will Bentley's recent mandate change his mind? Could J.C. have Drake Younger's back against The Naptown Dragons?

New CZW Jr. Heavyweight Champion Danny Havoc Appearing at CZW "CHOOSING SIDES"
The daredevil from Cylinder, Iowa is out to prove himself as he now holds his first championship in Combat Zone Wrestling. Could Danny Havoc stand in Drake Younger's corner against his nemesis Scotty Vortekz and the man who went to the hospital the last time he faced him - "Diehard" Dustin Lee?

Brodie Lee Looking to Kick Heads In At CZW "CHOOSING SIDES"
Returning to CZW at "CHOOSING SIDES" will be the impressive Brodie Lee, who, despite a loss teaming with Cheech last month, is said to be secretly forming some type of alliance with Team Chuck E. Cheech - comprised of Cheech and Chuck Taylor. Will Philadelphia see this group's first efforts on October 13th? And can Cheech work together with any partner, much less two of them?

The Ultraviolent Underground Champion Brings the Belt Back to Philadelphia
Fresh off of maiming The Hellaware Assassin, crushing J.C. Bailey's skull, and slugging Danny Havoc's brains out, the now 2-time UVU Champion Brain Damage has been signed to appear at CZW "CHOOSING SIDES". There is no doubt that Toby Klein and The Necro Butcher will be looking to get in the ring with him, but in all fairness, Brain Damage may be the one unstoppable monster that actually has the number of the Tough Crazy Bastards. The title returns to Philly on October 13th, and with the title comes the real-life "Terminator" himself - Brain Damage!

CZW will be releading the full card for CZW "CHOOSING SIDES" in the next weeks leading up to the show, including news of the CZW World Champion Ruckus' feelings on Maven Bentley's latest mandate, so stay tuned to CZWrestling.com!

Strong Style Shimko DVD Review: CZW Tournament Of Death 6 [Part One]

Send News

Combat Zone Wrestling
Tournament Of Death 6
June 9, 2007
Smyrna, Delaware
DVD available at: SmartMarkVideo.com
Disc 1 time: Approx. 100 min.

First off, I am a month late on this review. During a Combat Hooligans podcast this summer I had promised to review a DVD featuring Combat Zone Wrestling's sixth installment of Tournament Of Death, their annual one-day deathmatch extravaganza which is held during the summer in Delaware.

CZW's Tournament Of Death has had its fair share of insane moments within an already intensely violent event including a match with CZW owner John Zandig against "Sick" Nick Mondo where Zandig gave Mondo a falcon driver off a two-story building and crashing onto a pile of tables and lighttubes and into the unforgiving pavement below; Mondo was also in the first TOD and took a horrendous weedwhacker shot to his stomach.

The following year Canadian independent wrestler SeXXXy Eddy, who was making his debut against Ian Knoxx, suffered a severed artery and after his match squeezed his fist with a thin stream of blood spurting right into his mouth, a foul visual but he won the bloodmarks over with that one moment.

In 2005, the first and only time I attended Tournament Of Death, CZW veteran "The Future of Hardcore" Nick Gage suffered severe burns following a bump he took on a flaming barbed wire glass table-type structure positioned horizontally between the ring apron and a guardrail. Gage went on to win TOD in 2006, he was booked for this year's but didn't make it and is said to have retired from the business due to multiple injuries including some recent concussions.

So as you can see, there's never a dull moment in CZW, especially when it comes to their second biggest show of the year (the biggest being their annual year-end Cage Of Death event).

I was a big fan of CZW and regularly attended shows from early 2003 up until early 2006 when their awesome feud with Ring Of Honor ended, from there most of 2006 was abysmal as far as booking and match-ups were concerned. I did attend Cage Of Death 8 in December of that year and it was pretty much my swan song as far as attending monthly shows from the company.

CZW seemed to be on and off as far as quality of shows this year but when it comes to TOD you can expect an action-packed event showcasing the brutality of what CZW built its reputation on over it's almost 10-year existence.

Upon hearing rave reviews about this year's Tournament Of Death from even the most jaded fans I decided to give CZW some business and order the DVD set. This show is split into three discs so this particular review will consist of only the first disc, the others will follow within the following weeks to come.

Also want to note that the commentary on recent CZW DVDs have been horrible so this release gives the option to watch the show with or without commentary which gets a huge thumbs up!

Before the violence ensues, we have a non-tourney match to start off with...

Disc 1:
CZW World Tag Team Champions BLK OUT [Ruckus & Sabian w/Chrisy Riveria] vs Team AnDrew [Andy Sumner & Drew Gulak] - Non-title match
Sumner and Sabian start off the match, pretty even exchange as both men work wrist locks on each other and are countering each other's moves. Sabian bounces off the ropes, Sumner tries to catch Sabian and misses to which as fan yells, "WHAT THE FUCK??" Sumner tries to catch Sabian again and ends up in a hurrancanrana courtesy of "The Black Jesus". Sabian takes control with chops to Sumner's chest and gives him some nipple twisters, OUCH~! Gulak and Ruckus tags in and Gulak attempts to one-up the tag champs, the two have a fast-paced exchange with Ruckus also attempting a hurrancanrana, Gulak just drops him face first into the mat and goes for pin only to get a two-count. Gulak gets Ruckus in a submission move locking his arms around Ruckus' shoulder and pulling back his chin, Ruckus reaches the ropes and the hold is broken. Gulak continues to control the match until Sabian interferes with a backcracker to Gulak, Ruckus doesn't tag Sabian in but now he's the legal man... okay then. Sabian grabs Gulak by the neck and flips him over and slaps a headlock on him. A fan suggests that Sabian bites Gulak's ear and he does so, these fans have been bloodthirsty all morning waiting for some violence as you can see. Sabian with a suplex takes Gulak down and stretches him into a wacky submission move, not so wacky feeling though I'm sure. Ruckus runs in and lands a dropkick right in Gulak's face, following some chops, Gulak attempts to tag Sumner in but Sabian pulls him, Sabian whips Gulak into the ropes and Gulak counters with a sunset flip for a pin attempt, Sabian flips over Gulak and kicks him right in the back. Ruckus runs in a stomps Gulak in the face, Sabian goes for a pin but only gets a two-count. Ruckus tags in, bodyslams Gulak and does his razzle-dazzle flip onto Gulak, Ruckus' pin attempt gets another two-count. Gulak is whipped into the ropes and grabs onto Ruckus and brings him to the mat for a pin which Ruckus kicks out of and retaliates with a lariat taking Gulak down. After another two-count pin attempt Gulak whips Ruckus into the ropes only to get a kick to the head on his way back. Sabian tags in stomping away on Gulak following up with chops to his chest. Sabian hits a frankensteiner on Gulak off the top rope but fails to get a pinfall, Gulak whipped into the ropes leapfrogs Sabian and flips him over only getting a two-count. Sabian chokes Gulak with Body scissors and gets cocky by kissing his biceps and squeezing Gulak's neck with his legs. Without any luck, Sabian breaks the hold and knees Gulak right in the forehead. Sabian applies another chokehold on Gulak who breaks the hold and German suplexes Sabian to hell almost landing on his head. Ruckus and Sumner both tag in and Sumner's on fire taking both Ruckus and Sabian down, Sumner body presses Sabian (and has a bit of trouble doing so) and slams him down to the mat. Sumner grabs Ruckus and throws him over, Sumner goes for a pin but Sabian breaks the pinfall. BLK OUT double team Sumner with Ruckus kicking him on the side and Sabian hits him with a DDT-type move. Ruckus goes for a pin but Gulak breaks it up. BLK OUT whip Gulak into the ropes, Ruckus grabs Gulak by the legs and as Sabian goes for offense Sumner grabs Sabian slamming him down and Gulak rolls Ruckus for the pinfall. Great opening match.

LADDERS & LIGHT TUBES
CZW World Jr. Heavyweight Champion Scotty Vortekz vs Danny Havoc

The ring has a few light tubes in each corner, Vortekz cuts a promo wondering where his original opponent Nick Gage is and out comes Danny Havoc to which Vortekz asks the crowd, "who wants to see Danny Havoc die?" As Havoc enters the ring Vortekz immediately beats the shit out of him as the match starts off with some... wrestling moves. Vortekz runs the ropes only to get tripped by Havoc, he runs the ropes again as Havoc leapfrogs over Vortekz and is met by a lariat after more flippy moves on the mat. Vortekz bodyslams Havoc and places a light tube on his chest, Vortekz heads to the middle turnbuckle and hits a moonsault onto Havoc breaking the light tube on both their chests, Havoc's wearing a shirt, Vortekz isn't... who's the smarter one here?? Vortekz gets a two-count on Havoc and after some crowd taunting he removes his shirt... he's hardcore! he's hardcore! he's hardcore! BANG BANG~! he's hardcore! Vortekz swings a light tube Havoc who gets out the way and slams Vortekz shoulder first onto the mat with the light tube crushed between his shoulders and the mat yet fails to get the pin. Havoc takes control and hits a killer enziguri on Vortekz complete with... you guessed it, a light tube, Vortekz kicks out of Havoc's pin. Havoc brings a ladder into the ring smashing the top into Vortekz's head, Vortekz comes back with a forearm to Havoc's face, a chop to his stomach and a stiff kick to his chest. Hello internal bleeding~! Vortekz puts a light tube on Havoc's back and breaks it with his fist, dumb fuckin' move dude... Vortekz takes a broken light tube and slices Havoc's forehead with it, this is followed by a dropkick and a failed pin attempt by Vortekz. Havoc gets bodyslammed onto the ladder and has light tubes placed on his chest, Vortekz heads to the top turnbuckle and lands knee first onto Havoc's chest. Havoc kicks out of Vortekz's pin, Vortekz elbows Havoc in the face a few times falling to the mat, Vortekz places light tubes on Havoc's chest and climbs to the top turnbuckle again. Havoc gets up, hits the ropes as Vortekz crotches them, places the light tubes underneath Vortekz and lariats him right into the light tubes, Vortekz goes head first, crazy shit. Both men are on the ring apron as Havoc tries to suplex Vortekz onto layers of light tubes on the ground below, Vortekz ends up flipping Havoc onto the ground which is basically a black tarp covering the grass below. Vortekz and a CZW security guard lift the light tube structure into the ring, as Havoc gets back up Vortekz kicks him in the chest, Vortekz grabs a taller ladder and brings it in the ring. Vortekz sets up the ladder near the log cabin-type light tube structure as Havoc gets back in the ring only to be suplexed by Vortekz. Both men climb the ladder and Havoc sets up Vortekz over his shoulders in a fireman's carry and throws Vortekz into the light tubes. Havoc gets the pinfall and advances in the TOD. Crowd goes nuts chanting CZW~! CZW~! CZW~! CZW~! Vortekz cuts a promo on Havoc saying he wanted revenge at this show for when Havoc beat him in his CZW debut, he calls out Havoc once again. Havoc does an interview saying its possible that he could win TOD and mentions advice his high school counselor gave him about reaching goals. Fun stuff right there.

HOME-RUN DERBY DEATHMATCH
Insane Lane vs Freakshow

Both of these men have done deathmatches in IWA Deep South and IWA Mid-South, I believe this is both their debuts in CZW.
The boys begin elbowing the shit out of each other, Lane picks up a light tube and head butts it into Freakshow's forehead followed by a carving
courtesy of a broken light tube. Freakshow gets out of the ring and Lane hits him in the back with an empty water cooler jug attached to a pole, Lane takes another water jug, this time with circular light tubes attached and smashes the top of Freakshow's head and back, if that weren't enough (and it obviously wasn't) Lane delivers an insane (no... okay, pun intended) chairshot to Freakshow's head pretty much destroying the chair. During an exchange of punches Freakshow pounds his fist into Lane's head and grabs the water jug/circular light tube contraption and smashes atop Lane's head and follows up with a series of headbutts. A fist fight occurs as the fans chant, "USE THE BAT~!", instead Lane takes a long-ass light tube hitting Freakshow's back and head, good enough I guess. Both men are back in the ring as the crowd once again chants for the use of THE BAT which is very thick orange wiffle ball bat with four light tubes duct taped to it and also covered in thumbtacks, Lane picks up this monstrosity of a weapon and breaks the light tubes onto Freakshow's head, fuckin' pain man! Lane then jabs the broken ends of the light tube bat into Freakshow's forehead, Freakshow picks up THE BAT while Lane gets a barbed-wire bat, now the fun begins... Freakshow smashes Lane's back with the remaining light tubes on THE BAT then proceeds to smack him with the thumbtack portion of the bat, both wrestlers are covered with lots of blood. Freakshow sets up two chairs in the ring and places another set of light tubes horizontally on the chairs and gives Lane a Samoan Drop into the light tubes behind him, fuckin' brutal man. Freakshow swings the barbed-wire bat onto Lane's head, Lane grabs it and tears up Freakshow's chest and his forehead. Lane places the barbed-wire bat on Freakshow's chest and slams it with a steel chair then continues fucking him up with the bat. Lane puts the barbed-wire bat in Freakshow's face and pulls him upward in a somewhat variation of the Crippler Crossface-type deal. Freakshow taps out and Lane advances in TOD, both men get standing o's and also "please come back" chants. During both men's promo afterwards Zandig comes out and puts them over and lets the fans know to let CZW know if they want to see these guys back, I'm sure they will as they made quite the impression with the live crowd.

SHATTERED DREAMS
Mad Man Pondo vs "The Lariat" DJ Hyde w/CZW Commisioner Maven T. Bentley Esq.

What is a "Shattered Dreams" match you ask? There are four large panes of glass in each corner of the ring with a few steel chairs lying around... and both wrestlers have their fists wrapped up and covered with broken glass. Crowd begins a loud "FUCK 'EM UP PONDO FUCK 'EM UP" chant, both men play to the crowd, Pondo gets the pops and Hyde gets the heel heat to his dismay... collar and elbow tie-up, Hyde uses his weight, er, strength to get Pondo cornered near a pane of glass but is unsuccessful as Pondo escapes. Pondo makes the same attempt at cornering Hyde near the glass and Hyde escapes, Hyde elbows Pondo to the mat and cuts his face up with a wrist full of broken glass. Hyde punches the hell out of Pondo but he makes a slight comeback only to get bodyslammed for his efforts. Hyde places a folded steel chair onto Pondo's chest and drops himself on Pondo and the chair, Hyde goes for a pin but only gets a two-count. Hyde continues his dominance in the match, Pondo grabs a chair and as Hyde runs towards him he gets cracked in the head. Pondo pulls out scissors from his boot and proceeds to carve up Hyde's forehead, Maven meanwhile is protesting the "gimmick" as this happens. While Maven tells Hyde to "shake it off" Pondo whips him into the ropes and slams his "Can't STOP Pondo" sign into Hyde's face, dude's seeing stars at this point. Pondo sits Hyde in a steel chair and leans a pane of glass on his body, stands atop the first turnbuckle and flips right onto Hyde and the glass. Pondo goes for a pin and Hyde kicks out, Pondo drags Hyde to a corner of the ring setting up chairs around and on his limp body then heads to the top turnbuckle and throws himself into Hyde and the chairs. Pondo tries for another pin but Maven interferes, Pondo whips Hyde into another pane of glass, Hyde reverses with Pondo headed towards the glass, Hyde then spears him into the glass. Hyde and Maven set up the final glass pane in between two chairs, Hyde scoops up Pondo and slams him head first into the glass, Hyde gets the pinfall and advances in TOD to the crowd's disgust as they chant "BULLSHIT~!!!" Maven convinces Hyde that he'll win TOD, while Pondo says someday it's your day and other days it's not. He says maybe next time it'll be his day.

FANS BRING THE WEAPONS & BARBED-WIRE BOARDS MATCH
CZW Ironman Champion Mr. Insanity Toby Klein w/Billy Gram vs UltraViolent Underground Champion Brain Damage w/ Maven T. Bentley [Non-title]

Billy Gram [some Rob Zombie look-a-like] calls out both Maven and Brain Damage and partially fucks up his promo thus making its purpose sort of meaningless. Brain Damage steps up to the top turnbuckle playing it up to the crowd, Klein wastes no time and low-blows Brain Damage then throws him into a barbed-wire board. Klein breaks a guitar over Brain Damage's head and follows up with running a cheese grater in his face, Klein then gets a fork and stabs Brain Damage in his forehead. Brain Damage gets thrown out the ring and is attacked by Klein with a pizza slicer, now that's Italian! Both men continue fighting outside the ring, Klein gets a chair to the face and nasty headbutt followed by a series a chops to the chest. Klein returns the favor chopping the shit out of Brain Damage as Maven's crying foul, Damage's is completely covered in blood, Klein hits Brain Damage with a thumbtack bat (more like a long table leg covered in tacks) and rakes the thumbtacks against his back, Gram hits Damage in the head with a bible. Klein leans the tack bat on a steel chair, both men try to suplex each other into the bat and chair, Damage german suplexes Klein into the chair. Damage throws Klein into the crowd and clobbers him with a few plastic folding chairs courtesy of the fans, Maven hands Damage a steel chair and smashes Klein's lights out. Both men begin slapping the shit out of each other, Klein headbutts Damage into oblivion, Maven gives Damage a metal trash can and puts it on Klein and smashes him three times with the thumbtack bat from earlier. Klein then gets hit by the trash can from Damage, he takes a bottle of hot sauce and pours on Damage's bloody lacerated face, make a run for the border motherfuckers~! Back in the crowd Damage hits Klein in the neck with a walking cane and pours hot sauce down his gullet, Gram tends to Klein and Damage hits him in the face with a light tube. Damage hits Klein with a plastic shovel, he then gets a lit cigarette from a fan in the front row and burns Gram on his forehead. Klein retaliates with some punches and rolls Damage into the ring, Klein leans a barbed-wire board onto the ropes, he grabs Damage, Damage reverses and throws Klein into the barbed-wire and bounces to the mat, Damage jumps on top of the board sandwiching Klein between the barbed-wire side and the mat. Both men are trading punches, Klein gets the upper hand as Damage falls to the mat, Klein rolls him on his back for a pin but only gets a two-count. CZW veteran Lobo comes out and chases Maven into the crowd with a chair, Gram has a flaming stake to get revenge on Damage for burning him earlier, Klein has Damaged trapped as Gram gets ready to spit a fireball into his face, Damage escapes and Klein gets toasted. Damage punches out Klein and gets the pinfall advancing to the semi-finals. Afterwards Damage cuts a promo discussing his history with Klein when Lobo interrupts saying it's not cool for Damage to be wearing Lobo's "colors" in his "house" CZW... you see, when Lobo started out in CZW and throughout his career he wore "The Punisher" logo on t-shirts and jerseys, Brain Damage too wears The Punisher logo on his gear which pisses off Lobo. Damage says he's the PUNISHER in the ring, Lobo said he was lucky in the first round while Lobo's been doing the deathmatch/hardcore style for "a lifetime", this really pisses Brain Damage off. Klein and Gram cuts a promo on Brain Damage turning his back on Klein who needs medical attention for his eye.

Look out for part two of this review next week.

AS I SEE IT 9/10: Classless behavior in wrestling this weekend

Send News

AS I SEE IT
Bob Magee
Pro Wrestling: Between the Sheets
PWBTS.com

It's ironic with Saturday being the anniversary of Brian Hildebrand's passing eight years ago to the day, and being the night that Combat Zone Wrestling celebrated the memory of Christopher "Chris Cash" Bauman...ironic that someone who developed a reputation for being a hardcore wrestler walked out on CZW's Chris Cash Memorial Show because he didn't like the match he was asked to work. From every report I've heard from either fans or folks in the back, no one in CZW in the back did anything that should have caused this reaction...if Spike Dudley is 10% of the professional wrestler he claims to be.

Walking out on this show was a classless, gutless act no matter what the dispute, no matter what the reason.

Compare that with Drake Younger, who worked Saturday's show in a limited role with what was legitimately a severed finger only 24 hours prior, because he legitimately wanted to do something on the Chris Cash Memorial Show. That wasn't just storyline.

Compare that with Brian Hildebrand, who died eight years ago to that evening...who was working matches as a referee two weeks before his death, even though his body was riddled with cancer and he weighed less than 100 pounds. He loved the wrestling business that much.

Spike Dudley made it very clear on September 8 that he loves no one but himself.

Spike Dudley walked out of the show on September 8, and disrespected the memory of a young man that everyone concerned with CZW, even as a fan, remembers to this very day with great fondness. I've never said this before in the 10 years of PWBTS, but independent promoters everywhere that have giuven thought to booking Mr. Hyson need to pull his bookings for awhile and teach him a lesson in respect for the business as a whole and for Christopher Bauman in particular.

Speaking of pretty low-life crap in wrestling, we saw TNA last night blatantly false advertise Adam "Pacman" Jones as wrestling. Given the still-existing court order banning Jones from actually wrestling this wasn't going to happen, but tNA merrily advertised it anyway.

Thus, the Kurt Angle/Sting-"Team Pacman", the TNA tag title match featured a "match" where the Pacman of "Team Pacman" sttod on the ring apron, but didn't do a thing. He stood on the apron, but refused to tag in.

Meanwhile, Karen Angle came out screaming at Sting for not helping her husband enough. Sting raised his hand like he was going to hit her, which is apparently considered acceptable behavior for born-again babyface Christian men, as long as the woman's a heel. This resulted in her faking she'd been hit. Kurt saw his wife on the arena floor, with ehr claining Sting slapped her. Angle then gave Sting the Olympic slam, followed by Jones tagged in and pinned Sting to win the title. Wonder if that's considered "physical contact" by the Tennessee Titans?

Anyone who was silly enough to pay for this to see Jones wrestle ought to refuse to pay their cable/satellite provider for the PPV and point out that this is the second time where Jones has been false advertised as wrestling.

Until next time...

CZW 9/8 Cash Memorial results; Info on next weekend's TOD: Fast Forward! event

Send News

Credit: Ed O' Mac/CZWrestling.com

FULL CHRI$ CA$H MEMORIAL SHOW RESULTS! New Ironman, Tag Team, and Jr. Heavyweight Champs! Explosive Main Event! Headbutts! The Battle Royal! Wifebeater! Lobo! And More!

The locker room emptied as John Zandig welcomed Chris Cash's family, spoke about the late Chris Cash, and showed a new, emotional video, and kicked off the show with three students looking to prove themselves. The video, and John's speech, stressed Cash's commitment and enjoyment in the wrestling business, being ahead of his time, and love for the fans.

1. LJ Cruz defeated Joe Gacy and Alex Colon in a three-way match that was well-received by the crowd. Great work by the CZW Wrestling Academy stand-outs to put on an exciting bout that had the crowd into it. Gacy and Colon's inability to get along was their downfall.

2. Jon Dahmer & GQ defeated Brodie Lee & Cheech after mis-communcation between Lee and Cheech led to GQ delivering a Cash Driver to Cheech. Brodie hit some knockout kicks and Cheech & he delivered an impressive back suplex/Blockbuster combo that almost got them the win. Another failed Cheech partnership...?

- Niles-Young hits the ring to apologize for his head-butt incident...except he apologizes for not head-butting EVERY CZW FAN. Joker comes out and delivers the sickest headbutt you have ever heard, splitting Niles wide open and sending blood gushing down his face. Niles is irate and wearing a crimson mask, with Joker delivering another thud as Niles tries to fend him off. Derek Frazier hits the ring, BLKOUT hits the ring, and a match is set for later. Insults galore tossed.

3. "Diehard" Dustin Lee pinned Cloudy after reversing a Yoshi Tonic attempts into a sit-down pin, ala the Jig 'N Tonic. Post-match, Cloudy threw a tantrum at ringside and threw the announcer's table, upset at his losing streak.

4. DJ Hyde defeated Toby Klein to win the CZW Iron Man Title in a Dog Collar Match following a Shadow Driver after Toby kicked out of the Summoning Lariat. Billy Graham and Maven Bentley were handcuffed to each other until the cuffs actually broke with Maven's repeated attempts to get into the ring and help his charge.

5. BLKOUT fought Niles-Young & Derek Frazier to a no-contest when Team AnDrew interfered. Lobo hit the ring and made the match a three-way dance.

6. Team AnDrew defeated BLKOUT and Niles Young & Derek Frazier in a three-way dance when Drew Gulak scored the submission victory with the CHIKARA Special. Post-match, BLKOUT gave the new champions their respect, until Young & Frazier attacked Team AnDrew, from behind of course. Big ovation for the AnDrew title win. Sabian finally meets his match, BTW in one of the more humorous moments of the year!

7. GQ won the Cash Battle Royal, also involving: Jimmy Starz, Hellaware Assassin, Jimmy & Colin Olsen, G. Raver, Greg Excellent, Cheech, Core, WHACKS, Jon Dahmer, CJ O'Doyle. WHACKS was thrown off the top rope through the announce table. Lots of sick ladder smashes. GQ delivered the Cash Driver off the top through a propped up ladder, and eliminated both Olsens for a comeback victory.

- GQ is attacked by DJ Hyde during the celebration, only to be saved by Wifebeater & Toby Klein, who chokeslam Hyde through a table. Wifebeater then goes apeshit and cracks the tables and Hyde with a chair dozens of times.

- Nicky Benz & WYSP's Alex introduce the "Nicky Benz Show" with guest Lobo. Disrespect shown to Lobo, who gives Benz the DVD.

- Drake Younger apologizes for not being able to compete after nearly losing a finger. Joker accepts apology. Scotty Vortekz calls Drake a pussy and says his injury isn't that bad. Drake insults Vortekz. Diehard comes to the ring to back-up Drake, but then turns on him and calls his injury "pretty damn gay" and calls him a coward. Danny Havoc hits the ring and the RAAGE Dojo with a ladder, and Lobo sanctions a 5-way for the Jr. Title.

8. In a MUST-SEE main event, Danny Havoc defeated Joker, Drake Younger, Diehard, & Scotty Vortekz in a ladder match to win the Jr. Heavyweight Title. Glass everywhere. Joker Driver off a ladder onto Vortekz through tons of chairs. Drake gets absolutely squashed through glass. Diehard and Vortekz sadistically bash in Drake's hand with chairshots. A stacked-up superplex/powerbomb Tower of Doom through chairs/glass/ladders. Just total chaos. Crowd with deuling "CZW!" and "HOLY SHIT!" chants. Havoc is left alone admist the chaos and climbs the ladder with the crowd going nuts to win the title. Drake was rushed to the hospital as per doctor's orders following the beating from Vortekz and Diehard and being hit with a high-air flying double-knee from Vortekz that exploded a glass panel and sliced Drake up, who was underneath and held by Diehard. Talk about taking advantage of someone.

- Post-match, the locker room empties, the Cash family is again thanked, memories of Chris FUCKING Cash are shared, and we look forward to Saturday's TOD: Fast Forward.

Maven Bentley announces that Drake will definitely compete at Fast Forward or will be FIRED.

CZW WORLD TITLE MATCH AT "TOD: FAST FORWARD" WILL SEE RUCKUS Vs. HOMICIDE TO SETTLE THE SCORE!

CZW WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP ON THE LINE AT "TOD: FAST FORWARD!" HOMICIDE RETURNS GUNNING FOR RUCKUS!

Due to military commitments, "The Cambodian Axe Murderer" Joker will be unable to make it to Smyrna, Delaware this Saturday to go after "The Notorious 187" Homicide. However, the CZW World Heavyweight Champion Ruckus immediately stepped up and said he wants to finish Homicide off once and for all and prove he's the, quote, "one who runs this shit around here." Homicide, contacted by CZW management, laughed as Ruckus' claim, and said he'd be there in Delaware to take the champion's pride, "make BLKOUT my bitches", and win the CZW World Heavyweight Title in front of the hostile Delaware crowd.

Now confirmed for "TOD: Fast Forward", LIVE this Saturday from Bulldozer's Saloon in Smyrna, Delaware.

CZW World Championship: BLKOUT's Ruckus Vs. "The Notorious 187" Homicide

Former TNA talent debuts in CZW next month

Send News

Combat Zone Wrestling reports on its website that Spike Dudley will be appearing at the promotion's September 8th show which happens to be the same night as the Chris Cash Memorial show (Cash was a homegrown CZW talent who died two years ago). What's interesting is that Spike (Matt Hyson, billed as "Brother Runt" in TNA) is using his WWE-trademarked moniker here, let's see how long before CZW owner John Zandig gets a cease-and-desist letter from Jerry McDevitt (actually from McDevitt's secretary as McDevitt's pretty busy these days)? Anyway here's what some CZW fans think of this.

AS I SEE IT 8/13: Christopher Bauman 1982-2005

Send News

AS I SEE IT
Bob Magee
Pro Wrestling: Between the Sheets
PWBTS.com

It was nearly two years ago, on
August 18, 2005, that CZW wrestler Christopher "Chri$ Ca$h" Bauman Jr. was
killed as the result of a motorcycle accident near his home. Bauman had been
riding a motorcycle on Ellis Street in Glassboro, NJ when a Ford Taurus
turned in front of it from Higgins Drive, striking the car on the driver's
side of a vehicle driven by Daisy Gwin of Glassboro, NJ.

Christopher J. Bauman Jr., 23, died at the scene, as did his cousin 27 year
old Jeremy Bauman, 27, of Franklinville, NJ the driver of the motorcycle.
Gwin, 68, of Glassboro, died en route to Kennedy Memorial Hospital in
Washington Township, NJ.

Please keep the Bauman family in your thoughts and prayers as they go
through this painful time in their lives even two years later.

Chris was always genuinely friendly in a way that a lot of wrestlers aren't,
but had the wild side we all had at age 23. He was a nice young man, in
every sense that the phrase used to mean; and always felt obligated to call
me "Mr. Magee" when I came to a show (even when I told him he didn't have
to), would always say hello when I saw him at a CZW show and tell me he'd
seen something or another on my PWBTS.com site.

Bauman worked for CZW from 2001 through 2005, with many non-CZW fans even
taking notice of him at Cage of Death 5 in his absolutely psychotic ladder
match with Blackout's Joker (who left the promotion shortly afterwards to
serve in the US military over in Iraq).

The oddest thing is that this match wasn't even supposed to happen in the
way that it did; as it was originally scheduled as a tag team bout,
involving Deranged and Azriael, who were working the Jersey All Pro
Wrestling show in Rahway, NJ, then come down to Philadelphia for CZW.

But in an almost unprecedented moment for those who know CZW... the show was
actually running ahead of schedule. As a result, Deranged and Azriael were
not yet at the building. Another version of the story had the two calling
the building, telling CZW they were just leaving...and were told not to
bother, because they'd never make it in time.

In any event, this forced the promotion to go ahead with a singles ladder
match, which turned out to be the best thing that could have happened, as it
made two stars for CZW in one night with Cash and Joker nearly stealing the
entire show.

Psycho spots in this match included Cash bulldogging Joker while his head
was inside a rung of a ladder off the ropes onto a chair, a top rope
superplex onto a ladder stuck at a 45 degree angle into the rungs of another
ladder; ending with one of the sickest spots I've ever seen in my years of
shows at the ECW Arena, as Joker hit his Joker Driver (tiger driver from an
electric chair position) off the top of a high ladder with Cash through a
table for the pin. There's a three-minute highlight video on You Tube of
this match, including the spot in question at HREF="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=466ckmyu28I">this link.

Cash also main evented Cage of Death 6/War Games, as part of the babyface
Team Ca$h (Nate Webb, Sexxy Eddy, Cash, JC Bailey) against heel team (turned
babyface and heel again) Blackout (Ruckus, Sabian, Kingston, and Jack Evans.
As usual, the match featured the daredevil spots for which Cash was known
throughout his all-too-short career; including dumping Jack Evans via
backdrop off the COD to the floor, and giving Sabian a Cashflow off of the
scaffold through four tables, landing in the second row of the ECW Arena.

All I could think when I heard the news was: God...Chris was easily young
enough to be my son. Sons aren't supposed to die before the parents...or
their contemporaries. At the same time, I can't imagine Chris as a 40 or 50
year old. His spirit was too free and wild to have ever been anything but
young.

So now... it's nearly 2 years later. Here's the memorial video done by CZW
for Bauman: HREF="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SMeXMYiC4nk">http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SMeXMYiC4nk.
Watching it as I did this column this weekend still gets me choked up...even
two years later.

In Chris's memory, Combat Zone Wrestling will present its annual Chris Ca$h
Memorial Show with a scheduled 8:00 pm belltime.

For tickets, go to HREF="http://czwrestling.com/merch/index.php?act=viewCat&catId=5">http://czwrestling.com/merch/index.php?act=viewCat&catId=5.

Whatever you think of CZW...their style...or anything else, take a moment to
come and honor Chris's memory on September 8.

Until next time...

Some pro wrestling promoters and bookers need to watch "STAR WARS"

Originally published 3/17/07 on Strong Style Shimko

So I just finished watching Return Of The Jedi on HBO and almost 24 years after seeing it in the movie theater I still felt the emotional highs and lows, even with some seasoning here and there via special effects and such the main point of good vs. evil and watching it unfold was not in anyway compromised nor was the character development. The main and secondary characters in the films each had a unique personality which wasn't so complicated you couldn't figure out what their deal was. You could feel out who had good intentions and who didn't and which side they were on, in other words George Lucas didn't re-invent the wheel when he wrote these stories. He did create an elaborate world yet kept the story simple with the universal themes of good vs evil, friendship and romance.

Lucas also gave the audience a cliffhanger with Empire Strikes Back when Han Solo was frozen and taken off to the Emperor and Luke found out Vader was his father leaving that movie on a depressing note which made me and lot of people anticipate the conclusion in Jedi... would we see Han Solo again? How does Luke deal with the fact that his enemy is also his father? Would the Galactic Empire reign supreme?

All these questions were eventually answered.

I still got choked up during the scene when the Emperor (Palpatine) is shooting lightning at Luke after he refuses to kill Vader and join the dark side and after Luke's begging for Vader's help he eventually comes to his senses and saves Luke by throwing the Emperor down a reactor shaft in the Death Star. That moment really struck a nerve in me, to see the most evil motherfucker in the movie make a "babyface turn" (becoming a good guy) and save his son. The part later that got me also was Luke taking Vader's helmet off so he could see Luke before he died. And of course in the end the Rebels prevailed.

So... what does that rambling intro above have to do with pro wrestling? Well maybe a bit more than you think.

I was listening to Figure 4 Weekly's Bryan & Vinny show yesterday and they were breaking down the basic story of tag match of when two guys are beating on one guy it's seen as cheating but when the other partner tags in and starts beating on those two guys at once the crowd cheers seeing the one guy beat the shit out of two men. Basic story, simple, no gimmicks needed. Same thing with Star Wars, which I believe folks like... Vince Russo... Dutch Mantell... Jeff Jarrett (see a pattern TNA?)... John Zandig and anyone in charge of booking CZW this week... Stephanie McMahon and some members of the WWE creative team... and any other pro wrestling promoter and booker incorporating illogical angles into matches... ALL need to watch the Star Wars trilogy and understand the simple story of good vs evil and how you get that point in a story.

Fans are getting sick of endless mic promos and segments that have no payoff as well as gimmicks like an X-shaped scaffold and reverse battle royals or even just every match on a pay-per-view or TV taping having some type of gimmick as if the promoters and bookers lack any confidence in their product or maybe they want to try and "bring in new fans" which always cracks me because non-wrestling fans already despise it and if they watched 30 seconds of an Impact, WWECW or WWE TV on a night where logic holes are aplenty and people who can't even read from a cue card have a live mic on TV doing storylines about shooting someone's father or putting someone's girlfriend in an ankle lock to set up a match, their disdain for pro wrestling would grow even further.

Guys like Russo and the TNA bookers need to understand that simple storytelling, building up to a finish, basic psychology and less to no gimmicks in matches and on their show are all the fans basically want, enhancing the product can come later. Why are you trying to do something "new" and "innovative" when you can't even get the basic shit correct the first time?

CZW could also refer to this statement, although they're one of many indy promotions that rely on irrelevant spot-fest matches and ultra-hardcore-violence way too often, and hey I can enjoy a spot-fest or a garbage match if it sets a unique pace on a show with no other gimmicks but I would rather seeing good pacing to a crazy-ass spot/move or use of a "weapon", but CZW has had other recent problems with their product including nonsensical booking, fan backlash and bringing in people WHO CAN'T FUCKING WORK.

One thing I ask CZW, TNA, WWE, etc. Please make me care about these characters, give me a reason this guy is after his opponent instead sticking two random guys in a ring who'll smash each other's skulls with chairshots. And it can be simple, not like this guy went to city hall or the library to find out his opponent's criminal past and expose his dastardly act. Because at some point I'll lose track of the story and not because I lack an attention span but because the story gets so convoluted and I end up stop giving a shit.

I know some people are thinking, "Art, these guys don't necessarily need to watch Star Wars to understand basic storytelling." I would have to disagree, yes there are other sources to refer to in learning what makes a good story. I picked Star Wars because after all these years I can still watch these movies and they never get old; the characters, the sub-plots, the struggle for survival, peace and the destruction of the Empire, it all remains fresh because these are basic concepts presented in an entertaining manner and doesn't get sidetracked by "outside interference".

The story of good vs evil is as universal as music and romance, it's a story everyone in the world understands and embraces and why? Because we all want to see the good guys win, when the bad guy's superior in a match, or in any situation, mercilessly beating the shit out of the underdog it feeds our desire more and more to see the good guy make his comeback and get his revenge.

Star Wars may not be an example most would think of in referencing to for how to book a wrestling match, all I'm saying is the back story is so basic, even with all these characters in the first trilogy alone, if done correctly the story of a match can be told without any problem. Sure there's always going to an idea or two thrown in to enhance the product and I understand that. My problem with "over-booking" and throwing every idea out there will just crowd things up and confuse fans.

And when I mentioned earlier how promoters attempt to bring in non-wrestling fans into their shows, I think promoters need to understand and satisfy their real fans first, the ones who come every month to live shows, buy a DVD and puts the product over online and to friends.

Once that's taken care then promoters and bookers can think of ideas to help cross-promote their product with something mainstream to get into the conscious of the rest of the folks who don't follow or haven't followed wrestling in years. Because frankly, I'm tired of seeing a god damn baseball player in a fucking wrestling match.
