The Canadian press has an article with some quick news and notes which you can read here

Some of the more interesting things they point out is that Brandon Vera nearly walked away with as much money for losing as Anderson Silva did for winning. However, don't forget that those are just released earnings and who knows how that shakes out with bonuses factored in the equasion.

Also, the article mentions that from 03/31 to 09/30 in the state of California there have been 43 drug test failures in the state of California. That spans 100 shows and includes steroids and street drugs.
Now where you can say that MMA has a drug problem is that 33 of those failures were MMA fighters, 8 were boxers and 2 were kick boxers. The article contains a further breakdown of how many people tested for what.

1. Middleweight Bout: Alan Belcher Vs. Kalib Starnes
   Referee: Yves Lavigne
   
   R1: Starnes tries an early takedown but eats some strikes from Belcher for his trouble. Starnes already busted open. Kalib takes him down but Belcher back up quickly. They clinch for awhile and Belcher nails a big knee. Starnes starts to land some strikes of his own and his standup has improved since we last saw him. Belcher starts to return fire with knees and uppercuts and Starnes is bleeding pretty good. They trade more shots, uppercut by Belcher and then he throws a couple of knees and some big kicks. Leg kick from Belcher and a second at the 30 second mark. Starnes hanging tough but eating some shots. 10-9 for Belcher
   
   Dr. checks the cut, Starnes able to continue.
   
   R2: More standup to start with Starnes getting the early advantage. Then Belcher responds with leg kicks and we know how Krazy Horse feels about Leg kicks. Fight haulted so the Dr. can check Starnes' cut. This fight is called by the Dr. Starnes drops an F-bomb, and it was directed toward his corner.
   
   Winner: Alan Belcher - R2 1:39 via Dr. Stoppage
   
   
2. Light Heavyweight Bout: Stephan Bonnar Vs. Eric Schafer
   Referee: Big John McCarthy
   
   R1: Crowd behind Bonnar. Not much happens on the feet. Schafer takes Bonnar down and gets his back. Bonnar defending against Schafer's submission attempt, less than a minute left in the round. Round comes to an end. 10-9 for Schafer
   
   R2: Schafer pulls guard early but Bonnar won't go down the way he did in the first. Bonnar hits some shots and then they transition to half guard. Bonnar starts to lay in shots, but Schafer doesn't defend. Finally, McCarthy steps in and ends the fight.
   
   Winner: Stephan Bonnar - R2 2:47 TKO
   
   
3. Lightweight Bout: Alvin Robinson Vs. Jorge Gurgel
   Referee: Mark McFeaney
   
   R1: Big pop for the Cincinnati fighter Gurgel. They start trading right away. There was an audio drop, we've actually had several throughout the night. Fight goes to the ground with Gurgel doing most of the work and moving to side control. Mount by Gurgel at the end of the round. 10-9 Jorge
   
   R2: Robinson wants to trade early, then takes Gurgel down. Gurgel works and ends up on top. Robinson is no slouch of his own and switches back to the top. Robinson is laying in with hammerfists and has bloodied Gurgel. Robinson laid in the beating to end things. Robinson 10-9, 19-19.
   
   R3: Robinson takes Gurgel down immediately to start the round. The third round starting the way the second round ended. Rogan is plugging UFC's video on demand. Robinson is being active so the referee is not considering standing them up. Robinson has passed and is close to Gurgel's back, and the announcers are already talking about a disappointing loss. Robinson just lays in shots to end the round. 10-9 for Robinson, 29-28 Robinson.
   
   Winner: Alvin Robinson - Unanimous Decision (29-28, 29-27, 29-27)
   
   Joe Rogan interviews Brock Larson...er...Lesnar as Rogan screwed up the name.
   
   They've made no mention of the Couture situation yet.
   
   
4. Heavyweight Bout: Tim Sylvia Vs. Brandon Vera
   Referee: Yves Lavigne
   
   Sylvia gets a mixed reaction. Now they note that the winner of this could face Nogueira for the title.
   
   R1: They clinch early and spend the early round in this position. Crowd gets hostile to the clinch work and they're finally separated. Sylvia nails a big shot, Vera answers.Vera with an elbow, Sylvia with a knee. Round ends to some major booing. Sylvia 10-9
   
   R2: Vera hits a right to start but it is back to the clinch. A very loud, and noticeable boring chant erupts. It ends when Vera takes Sylvia down and in to side control. Vera hits some knees to the body. Sylvia gets up but takes an illegal knee to the head as he still had one knee down. Sylvia is given time. Vera hits some body kicks and a flurry to finish. 10-9 for Vera.
   
   R3: Sylvia starts the round strong and pushes Vera up against the cage again trapping him. Sylvia nails more shots, lands everything and easily wins the round. 10-9 Sylvia, 29-28 Sylvia.
   
   Winner: Tim Sylvia - Unanimous Decision (29-28, 29-28, 29-27)
   Euan had better not hate this Sylvia performance or we'll take away his mustard.
   
   Sylvia calls out...Cheick Kongo.
   Vera puts Sylvia over as a nice guy and says he shouldn't be booed. He also said he broke his hand and went against the gameplan.
   Vera asks the crowd if Sylvia whooped his ass, they respond with "nooooo" and he says: "I'm still at heavyweight then, bitches!" I love this man.
   
   Rogan says something kind of stupid. He says that upsets are more common than expected. Um, aren't the point of upsets that they're all unexpected? Isn't that why they call them upsets?
   
   Rich Franklin comes out to "Welcome to the Jungle" and to a jufustitastinormus pop from his hometown crowd.
   Anybody who knows what song Anderson Silva came out to, let me know. The boos for Silva aren't as loud as I expected.
   
   
5. Middleweight Championship Bout: Rich Franklin Vs. Anderson Silva
   Referee: Big John McCarthy
   
   R1: Franklin hits strikes early, he avoids Silva's clinch attempts and takes him to the mat. Silva able to get back to his feet. Silva hits a body kick, Franklin responds with a right and Silva blitzes with a series of strikes. Silva blitzes Franklin again and rocks him at the end of the round dropping him at the bell. Because of the strong finish, Silva's round 10-9.
   
   R2: Silva just comes back out and fustigates Franklin in the second round. Lays in knees after knees after knees and the fight is stopped by Big John McCarthy.
   
   Winner: Anderson Silva - R2 TKO
   
   
6. Middleweight Bout: Demian Maia Vs. Ryan Jensen
   Referee: Big John McCarthy
   
   R1: Inside leg kick by Maia and takes Jensen down right away. Maia passes guard back to side control. Maia has good jiu-jitsu. Maia takes Jensen's back and is looking to finish. Maia chokes Jensen out. Impressive performance for Maia. It is too bad he's a middleweight and that's the house Anderson Silva lives in.
   
   Winner: Demian Maia - R1 2:40 Rear Naked Choke

“The Half-Guarded Truth": UFC 77

“UFC 77: Rich Franklin”

Imagine you’re Rich Franklin. A year ago this month, you were as good as it got in the UFC: you’d won the middleweight championship, successfully defended
it twice, been prominently featured as a coach on The Ultimate Fighter, had an eight-fight win streak, and were clearly one of the main stars the company
was pushing to the general public. When a mainstream outlet was looking for a spokesperson for the sport, the UFC repeatedly turned to you for help.
Bright, well spoken, tough as nails, with an exciting style, you were supposed to reign over your division for years.

Then, two weeks before Halloween, you found yourself in the midst of something approximating a horror film. One minute, thirty seconds into the first round,
your opponent, Anderson Silva, largely unknown the American public, grabbed you behind the back of the head and started to batter your body with knees.
To the uninitiated, it might have looked like Silva was playing nice, not trying to break your face, and giving you a sporting chance to fight back. But
you knew better. He’d throw a shot to the right side, so you’d switch your stance to block, then he’d turn his attention to the left side, and once again
you’d react. Silva did this twenty straight times. Deep down, you knew what he was doing. You knew he was trying to get you to bring both your hands
down so he’d have unfettered access to your face. You knew you shouldn’t accommodate him. You did anyways. The next knee landed straight on your jaw.
No one thought Silva was playing nice.

This is when the terror kicked in. There is no worse feeling than knowing you’re a beaten man, but having no choice but to soldier on. Your instinct must
have been to run, and for a moment it seemed as if you wanted to do just that, but your pride forced you to stand and fight. Funny thing about that pride,
sometimes it’s a blessing – this time it was a curse. You staggered back. Silva threw four more knees to your body. In an act of desperation, you lunged
and threw a right hook. As if he were insulted that you even tried to fight back, Silva once again locked his hands in a vice around your neck and let
loose a knee. This one landed square on your nose. The uninitiated never understood, but you did: Silva was always trying to break your face, he was
just taking his time. You’d need surgery to fix the damage done from that last knee.

Silva rushed in, threw a high kick, and finally, poetically, launched a final knee to your head, this one causing you to drop. Silva was no longer unknown
and you were no longer champion.

Life was different after that show, wasn’t it? Your next fight, against Jason MacDonald, was on the undercard of an event taking place in your home state.
After that, you got to fight the ever dull, Yushin Okami at UFC 72 – a show the UFC prized so much that it aired in the middle of the day on PPV. You
go from top billing on three straight PPVs to this?

And then there were the whispers. Maybe people didn’t say it right to your face, but everyone was talking about whether you were a fraud all along. Champions
can lose, but they shouldn’t look lost? You didn’t look competitive and what’s more, for a fighter known for his intelligence, no one could believe you
had no idea how to handle the Thai clinch. Every accomplishment of your career was called into question from that moment forward. When you lose like
that, people don’t even bother looking before they jump off the bandwagon.

And what about MacDonald and Okami anyways? Both were quality opponents, either in or near the top ten rankings, yet your victories were never over them,
were they? You’d finish MacDonald in ten minutes, and instead of getting praise for your win, you’d hear questions about Silva. When people saw you clinch
with Okami, their minds instantly flashed to Silva. It was all about Silva.

“Have you worked on your clinch?” “Do you think this fight will help you prepare for Silva?” “When do you want a rematch with Silva?” “Did this fight
give you any insight into Silva?” “How does MacDonald/Okami compare to Silva?” “Can you beat Silva?” “Can. You. Beat. Silva?”

Can. Knee. You. Knee. Beat. Knee. Silva. Knee.

Two minutes and fifty-six seconds of fighting had forever changed your entire life. When you fought then-middleweight champion, Evan Tanner, had you lost,
you could have moved on with your life. Maybe you wouldn’t be an all-time great, but people would remember you as, “Rich Franklin, professional fighter.”
Had you put in a competitive few rounds with Silva before losing, you’d have been, “Rich Franklin, former world champion.” Now it’s different, isn’t it?
Unless you win, you’re always going to be, “Rich Franklin, the guy who could never beat Anderson Silva.”

Every day, for one full year, you’ve had to wake up and think about that night. Before you went into surgery to fix your mangled nose, you thought about
Silva. When you were recovering, you thought about Silva. Beat MacDonald – doesn’t matter that you outclassed him, think about Silva. Beat Okami – that’s
a long plane flight back from Northern Ireland to America, plenty of time to sit and think about Silva. Every time you woke up early in the morning, and
it would have been so easy to roll over and hold your wife instead of running; every time your foot landed on the pavement; every time your fist crashed
into a heavy bag; every time your training partner punched your once-broke nose; every time you had to forego that slice of pizza and drink a protein shake
instead; every time your knee touched the mat and you felt the strain on your thigh as you shot in for a takedown; every time you looked at yourself in
the mirror, you thought about Silva.

Anderson Silva loves being the middleweight champion. It is a certainty that he wakes up and is happy to have that belt. On Saturday, October 20, 2007,
from the US Bank Arena in Cincinnati, Ohio, he will defend that title with all he has. But he is still just fighting for a belt. Rich Franklin is fighting for so much more.

This UFC 77 ‘Hostile Territory’ preview is going to be shorter than is typical for me. The fact is that I’ve been busy as all hell the past couple of days working on site related things which I’ll wager most people won’t even appreciate if they even notice at all but which will make the site better.

I know nothing about either guy really accept they both lost in their UFC debuts. Black is the heavy favorite so I’ll pick him to win because I’m tired.

"The People’s Warrior" Josh Burkman: 27, 5'10, 170, 19-4-0
I seem to always under rate Forrest Petz for some reason. Maybe it’s the Meat Cleaver thing. Anyway, both these guys are talented and both could use the win. Burkman’s competition of late has been better, he lost to Karo Parisyan in his last bout while Petz defeated Luigi Fiorvanti last time out. I’ll take Burkman but it is a tough one.
Winner: Josh Burkman

Middleweight Bout:
Demian Maia: 29, 6'0, 185, 6-0-0
Vs.
Ryan Jensen: 29, 5'10, 185, 11-2-0
I again know nothing about either guy really, Maia is making his debut while Jensen is coming off a loss to Thales Leites. I’m picking Maia to win because his name is cooler.

Lightweight Bout:
Jorge Gurgel: 30, 5'9, 155, 14-2-0
Vs.
Alvin "Kid" Robinson: 24, 5'8, 155, 9-2-0
Gurgel is coming off a win over Diego Saraiva at UFC 73 while Robinson is coming off a loss to Kenny Florian. At 0-1 in the UFC Robinson definitely needs a win but unfortunately for him Gurgel is a real tough out. I’m picking Gurgel to take this.

Middleweight Bout:
Jason "The Athlete" MacDonald: 31, 6'3, 185, 19-8-0
Vs.
Yushin Okami: 25, 6'2, 185, 21-4-0
The winner of this fight could get a title shot which is kind of sad since Rich Franklin beat both of these guys earlier this year. Okami lost to Franklin his last time out while MacDonald, a Franklin victim at UFC 68, defeated Rory Singer at UFC 72.
MacDonald is more of an exciting fighter while Okami is less so but wins way more than he loses and nearly tapped Franklin in round 3 at UFC 72. I’ll go with Okami if only because while MacDonald does well against members of the Ultimate Fighter, it is only cast members he beats and Okami never was one of those.
Winner: Yushin Okami

Middleweight Bout:
Kalib Starnes: 32, 6'1, 185, 10-1-1
Vs.
Alan "The Talent" Belcher: 22, 6'2, 185, 10-3-0
I picked Belcher on the little preview show Euan and I did, so I’m sticking with that here.

Eric "Ravishing Red" Schafer: 29, 6'3, 205, 9-2-2
Vs.
"American Psycho" Stephan Bonnar: 30, 6'3, 205, 13-3-0
Picked Bonnar on the show, sticking with my choice. I’m really exhausted, maybe even moreso when I recorded that show that’s why it is just easier for me to tell you to listen to it.

Tim "The Mainie-ac" Sylvia: 31, 6'8, 255, 25-3-0
Welcome back to the UFC Brandon Vera. He gets a tough opponent in the former champ in his first match back. I am not nearly as down on Tim Sylvia as my friend Euan but as I’ve mentioned several times I am a pretty big fan of Brandon Vera. I think both men have something to prove which is why I actually expect this to be a pretty entertaining brawl. I think it all comes down to Sylvia’s reach. If Vera can close the distance and not allow himself to take many big shots then he should be in good shape to win.

Middleweight Championship Bout:
Rich "Ace" Franklin: 32, 6'1, 185, 24-2-0
Vs.
Anderson "The Spider" Silva: 33, 6'0, 185, 19-4-0
Lots of intrigue in this fight. How will Anderson Silva handle being so roundly hated? Is Anderson Silva still in Franklin’s head after last years beating? Can Franklin resist the temptation to stand with him and take this to the ground? Honestly, I’ve thought about this a lot and while I’m not as automatic on this as Euan, Euan tends to make more extreme statements on fights than I, we both give this one to Silva. He’s on a role and I’m not picking against him this time after looking so bad the last time I did it.
Winner: Anderson Silva

I'm kind of surprised that with Vera out of the spotlight for so long that he's a mild favorite, but I guess Tim Sylvia was in the spotlight but in not such a good way.
I guess if you like Petz or Grice you might want to consider something but otherwise there isn't anything I'd bet on this one.

I remember seeing the Odds for Silva last Oct. when he was an underdog for Rich Franklin and seriously the fact I didn't lay money on that is a huge regret.

As a reminder if you have someone who is -205 that means you've got to bet $205 to win back $100. If you have someone who is +135 you bet $100 to win $135.

It was a close one, but in a narrow victory, WWE 'No Mercy' defeats UFC 77 'Hostile Territory'. I wonder if No Mercy would've won had John Cena not been injured and had the first new WWE champion in a year been less than the guarantee it is now. Perhaps, it also was victorious because of the Save_US_222 deal and the potential for Jericho to return. Plus, UFC 77 isn't the sexiest card. Bound for Glory is screwed, and Cyber Sunday also got no votes but in fairness to that show, it isn't like there is a card already. ShoXC got one vote and it wasn't mine though I am going to cover it.
