Cage Rage 23 'Unbelievable' Preview and Predictions

Welcome to my preview and Predictions for Cage Rage 23 ‘Unbelievable’. The British promotion has compiled an interesting card, that’s for sure. I’ve naturally got my 1979 U.S. quarter for one last round of battle. You’ve served me well and been a worthy challenge my metallic challenger and maybe you’re next assignment will be in a vending machine.

Welterweight Bout:
Jason Barrett: 167, 3-4-0
Vs.
Lee Doski: 169, 12-10-0
Pretty much a kick boxing match inside the confines of a cage. Doski’s record is superior but sometimes that can be misleading and I think this is one of those times. Barrett’s last loss was to Nigel Whitear back in March when he submitted to an armbar and walked away with a broken arm. Can you say Motivation? Barrett is more complete and will win this by second round KO. I’ve also heard but not seen that Barrett is a good interview and I love those guys, so time will tell.

Welterweight Bout:
Ross “The Boss” Mason: 170, 9-7-0
Vs.
Che Mills: 170, 4-1-0
One interesting thing about this fight is that these men have a common opponent with different outcomes. Mason and Mills have both fought Marius Zaromskis. Mason was knocked out in the third round via flying knee at Cage Rage 22 in July. Mills was more successful as at Cage Rage contenders 2 back in August of 2006 he defeated Zaromskis by first round KO.
Mason has fought in Cage Rage 6 times with a 2-4 record. However, in fairness to him, his losses are to Zaromskis, Paul Daley, Chris Lytle and Jess Liaudin and the latter 2 men have both competed and been victorious in the UFC.
Mills has fought primarily on the Cage Rage Contenders show which is a vehicle for guys to get on to the main shows. His most noteable opponent has been UFC veteran Paul Taylor with whom he went to a no contest on Cage Rage Contenders 3.
If Mason, who was an injury replacement for Paul Kelly, wants to continue fighting on the main Cage Rage shows he’ll need a win in this one. Mason is the better of the 2 on the feet but his ground game is a bit on the lacking side which is good news for Mills. If Mills can avoid the big hits he should take Mason down and submit him maybe as soon as the first.

Light Heavyweight Bout:
Roman Webber: 205, 2-3-0
Vs.
Ed Smith: 205, 2-1-0
Pretty simple here. These guys both like to bang and they both need a win if they wish to continue on the main shows as both have suffered losses in their last Cage Rage bouts. Smith lost to Tom Watson at Cage Rage 22 in July while Mark Epstein defeated Webber at Cage Rage 21 in April.
It’s a real coin flip in this one but I don’t see it going the distance. I’ll take Smith by first round KO.

Heavyweight Bout: Domonic Ostich: 0-0-0 Vs.
Neil Grove: 2-0-0
Neil Grove is super-sub. He was a late injury substitute at Cage Rage 22 back in July and flattened Pride veteran James Thompson in 10 seconds. On the list of ways to make a name for yourself on the UK fight scene that one ranks pretty close to the top.
Ostich has a K-1 background so he’s got the kick boxing background. I’m going to predict though that Neil Grove proves to the world that he’s no fluke by registering another KO and another in Round 1.

Middleweight Championship Bout:
Alex “Reidernater” Reid: 183, 8-7-1
Vs.
Matt “The Hardest” Ewin: 185, 16-9-1
I told Euan that when I saw that Matt Ewin would be in this fight and his nickname was “The Hardest” that Euan would probably somehow be made fun of during someone’s preview. It won’t be mine however, because I’m all about serious analysis when I preview MMA and have never ever made any jokes in a preview.
Anyway, this is a rematch 5 years in the making. Reid defeated Ewin in 2002 and since then has been begging for a rematch. Ewin claimed that Reid Greased himself up before the first fight thus making it hard for him to take Reid down.
Ewin is very good at taking people down and Reid is not so good at defending those takedown attempts. If Reid can avoid being taken down though he should be able to strike his way to a win. We’ll find out early if Reid can defend against the takedowns. I’m going to predict he can’t and loses by decision.

Middleweight Bout:
Xavier “Professor X” Foupa-Pokam: 25, 6’1, 180, 12-7-0
Vs.
Pierre Guillet: 34, 6’3, 205, 10-5-0
Xavier Foupa-Pokam is a French Muay Thai boxer who has a 4 fight winning streak with 3 of those victories coming in Cage Rage. In fact, Foupa-pokam has ties to fighters all over this show. He has defeated alex Reid by decision, he split 2 fights with Matt Ewin and his Cage Rage debut way back at Cage Rage 7 was a loss to Paul Daley. He also has a loss on his record to UFC Middleweight hopeful Martin Kampmann.
Guillet is no stranger to tough competition himself however. He has faced both Trevor Prangley and Renato “Babalu” Sobral. Sure, he’s lost to them both but that’s been the knock on him that he folds when the pressure’s on. His loss to Sobral is part of his 1-2 record in Cage Rage. Foupa-Pokam is good from the clinch and should end up there with Guillet and should turn his 4 match winning streak in to 5.

British Heavyweight Championship Bout:
Mustapha Al Turk: 245, 4-2-0
Vs.
Tengiz Tedoradze: 242, 21-7-1
This is a fight that is interesting on so many levels. Tedoradze is a strong wrestler but does have a boxing game, though a tendancy to leave his chin open could spell trouble. Alturk on the other hand has also improved his standing game of late but is still primarily a submission fighter. So we could see this standing for awhile and if one gets a clear advantage the other will look to take it to the mat to reverse his fortune. If neither has an overwhelming edge standing than both may be content to keep it going and slug their way to a victory. I’m going to predict that Tedoradze takes this fight by second round stoppage due to ground and pound.

Lightweight Bout:
Jean “White Bear” Silva: 145, 14-7-3
Vs.
Chris “The Westside Strangler” Brennan: 35, 5’8, 155, 19-11-1
Brennan takes this fight on short notice as a late replacement for Masakazu Iminari. Both Brennan and Silva are accomplished in Jiu-jitsu so if this does hit the ground it could be quite the exhibition of mat work. Silva, the shootbox member, is the better of the 2 on the feet and so if the ground game stalls out as it very well could, look for it to be settled standing and look for Silva to win by KO in the second.

Welterweight Championship Bout:
Mark “The Wizzard” Weir: 40, 6’2, 170, 18-13-0
Vs.
Paul “Semtex” Daley: 5’9, 170, 15-6-2
Weir will have a clear weight and reach advantage in this fight since Weir usually fights at Middleweight. In Daley’s last fight, he managed to out strike one of the better one’s in the game in Duane “Bang” Ludwig. Daley is giving up a lot in height, weight and reach but he is 10 years younger and will have speed on his side. Weir will look to use his reach to keep Daley outside and unable to close the distance. However, I see Daley moving in and out and using his quickness to successfully move inside. I’m going to take Daley by decision in a nice stand-up fight.

Light Heavyweight Championship Bout:
Vitor “The Phenom” Belfort: 30, 6’0, 205, 15-8-0
Vs.
James “The Messenger” Zikic: 6’2, 205, 15-4-2
Former UFC Light Heavyweight champion Vitor Belfort has had an up and down career to say the least. He appeared to have things on the right track in his last Cage Rage bout defeating Ivan Serati back in April in less than 4 minutes.
Zikic’s spot in this bout is reward for withstanding dozens of leg kicks from Evangelista "Cyborg" Santos back in April to not only survive that but win a decision.
Zikic has a lot of heart, his last bout was proof of that and it could carry him to a win. However, Belfort has a new team, and if he is motivated which is always a question for him, then he’s on an entirely different level. Zikic will make a game of it but in the end I expect that the Phenom will return.

Heavyweight Bout:
Julius Francis: 42, 6’2, 0-0-0
Vs.
Gary Turner: 225, 3-0-0
Julius Francis is one of England’s more well-known boxers and he even once had a fight with some guy named “Iron” Mike Tyson. Francis’ appearance in Cage Rage is part of the promotions efforts to reach out to the British boxing community with the hopes that some of them will embrace the sport. Francis’ last 14 bouts in boxing were all losses though so you’ve got to wonder how much is left in the tank.
Boxing is a completely different game though and so while Francis has the better hands, you don’t know how he’ll react to being taken down or attacked with kicks to the body or legs. Turner is an experienced fighter with a judo background and no lack of standup skills.
The longer this fight goes without Francis landing a big bomb with his fist the better of Turner will be. I say Gary avoids the big fist and hits leg kicks and eventually gets Francis down and overwhelms him with ground and pound to win in the late first.

IFL Championship Series: Preview and Predictions

Welcome to my preview for the IFL Championship Series between the New York Pitbulls and the Iowa Silverbacks. New York, coached by Renzo Gracie, went 3-0 in the season and defeated Tokyo in the Semifinals. Pat Miletich’s Iowa went 2-1 in the regular season and avenged their loss defeating Los Angeles’ Anacondas in the Semifinals.

If this preview seems rushed or below normal quality it is because I’m very tired while writing it. I also am less familiar with most of the guys fighting than I am for a typical UFC card. However, I brought my 1979 quarter with me and judging by the beating it gave me on Fight Night 11, it will probably have a few things to teach me here.

Lightweight Bout:
Bart Palaszewski: 24, 5’9, 155, 28-8-0 (Iowa)
Vs.
Devidas Taurosevicius: 30, 5’9, 155, 8-2-0 (New York)
Palaszewski is one of the top Lightweight’s in the entire IFL and seaded third in the upcoming grand prix. Deividas Taurosevicius replaced Erik Owings on the Pitbulls for their series with Tokyo and got New York a key victory over the Sabers’ Savant Young.
Palaszewski only has one blemish on his IFL record and that is to L.A.’s Chris Horodecki. The experience both in MMA and in IFL competition lies with Palaszewski. He’s a very well-rounded fighter and I may be short changing Taurosevicius but it is because I don’t know him as well. I’m taking Palaszewski to win.

Welterweight Bout:
Jake Ellenberger: 5’10, 170, 15-2-0 (Iowa)
Vs.
Delson “Pe De Chumbo” Heleno: 29, 5’11, 170, 11-3-0 (New York}
Heleno is ranked #1 in the IFL at Welterweight in their upcoming Grand Prix. Of course, Heleno is also coming off a decision loss to Antonio McKee in the IFL Semifinals back in August.
Ellenberger has competed in Bodog and is a substitute for regular Silverbacks competitor Rory Markham.
Heleno’s Jiu-jitsu is pretty good but then you can say that about many who were taught by a Gracie. I don’t know much about Ellenberger but his winning this bout would be an upset of large proportions and there just aren’t as many of those in the IFL as in the UFC.

Middleweight Bout:
Ryan McGivern: 27, 6’0, 185, 10-5-0 (Iowa)
Vs.
Fabio Leopoldo: 30, 6’0, 185, 5-2-0 (New York)
These 2 have met before way back on 09/23 of 2006. In that fight, McGivern was submitted by Leopoldo’s kneebar in the second round.
While the conventional wisdom would be to predict a repeat victory for Leopoldo and while it is possible, McGivern has improved a lot since then and is one of the promotions better Middleweights. I’m here to prodict an avenging of the prior loss by McGivern.

Light Heavyweight Bout:
”Mike C” Mike Ciesnolevicz: 27, 6’0, 205, 13-2-0 (Iowa)
Vs.
Andre Gusmao: 6’2, 205, 4-0-0 (New York)
Another match that was originally contested on 09/23 of last year. In that contest Andre Gusmao was the victor in that fight. Gusmao and Jamal Patterson have been splitting time as New York’s Light Heavyweight fighter but Gusmao has amassed a 3-0 record in the IFL thus far.
You want to know why Iowa is contending for another championship and looking to win it in back-to-back seasons? It is because you can pretty much make the statement that all 5 of their guys are in the top or close to it of their respective weight classes. Ciesnolevicz is no different. He had a setback against Alex Schoenauer in the first match of the Silverbacks’ season but was able to take the rematch in the IFL Semifinals. He just keeps getting better and better every time he fights. I think he’s out to prove something and I’m going to project a win for him.

Heavyweight Bout:
”The North Star” Ben Rothwell: 25, 6’5, 265, 26-5-0 (Iowa)
Vs.
Ricco "Swav" Rodriguez: 30, 6’4, 250, 26-6-0 (New York)
Rodriguez is a former UFC heavyweight champion brought in at the last second to replace Tom Sauer who was a replacement for Bryan Vetell. Rodriguez is a talented if disappointing fighter who has had issues with his weight in the past.
Rothwell is the top sead in the Heavyweight grand prix to be contested in November. A criticism of Rothwell is that he’s not facing a lot of tough competition because the IFL’s Heavyweight Division is so thin. Rothwell is just a big powerful guy though and perhaps has earned the description of a man among boys when it comes to the IFL. Rothwell is going to face his toughest test to date in the promotion in Rodriguez. If the right Ricco Rodriguez shows up then Rothwell could have a tough time. If the lazy Rodriguez shows up Rothwell should win easily. I’m taking Rothwell because you just don’t know what you’re going to get from Ricco these days.

My coin got revenge on me huge in this round, I had a substancial lead headed in to this round but my coin humbled me and pretty much everyone else as well.
We had 3 contests, Scott, Art and myself. Scott and Art defeated their coins in pick-to-pick combat while I was humbled by mine.

UFC Fight Night 11 Preview and Predictions

I’m back for the first of 4 big MMA Previews this week. I’ve got this show, plus the IFL Finals, UFC 76 and Cage Rage 23. So expect some MMA goodness this week. I’ve also brought back my favorite whipping coin the 1979 United States quarter which I’ve yet to lose to in the 5 previous pick contests.

Welterweight Bout (Dark):
Thiago "The Pitbull" Alves: 23, 5'8, 170, 16-4-0
Vs.
Kuniyoshi Hironaka: 30, 5'10, 170, 11-3-0
Alves is making his return to the UFC for the first time since UFC 66 where he stopped Tony DeSouza in the second round. He’s been off serving a drug suspension since then but looks to improve on his 4-2 UFC record. His UFC victories have come against Ansar Chalangov, Derrick Noble, WEC Welterweight John Alessio and Desouza. His losses were to Spencer Fisher in Alves’ UFC debut and to Jon Fitch. Fitch is a common opponent for both Alves and Hironaka and they both were defeated Alves by TKO and Hironaka by decision.
Hironaka is making his third appearance in the Octagon, losing to Fitch in his debut at UFC 64 in October 2006 but rebounding to defeat Forrest Petz at Fight Night 9 in April of this year. In the Fitch fight, Hironaka took quite the beating but Fitch was unable to finish him.
This would ordinarily be a tough fight for me to call. Both guys are going to prefer a standup game but if one shows a clear edge the other will look to take it to the ground. Hard to pick the better slugger which is why this is tough. However, the decision became easy once I got a look at Hironaka’s Q&A with UFC.com

Thoughts on upcoming opponent, Thiago Alves? Thiago-san is very aggressive and fast so I am planning to out-do all that he possesses and showcase what Japanese fighters are all about. He will be in for an MMA clinic in Las Vegas and I hope he likes it.

That’s a 5 star answer if I’ve ever heard it. I’ll take Kuniyoshi Hironaka by decision and I hope this fight makes air so Art has to type Kuniyoshi Hironaka a few times.

Lightweight Bout (Dark):
Cole "Magrino" Miller: 23, 6'1, 155, 12-2-0
Vs.
Leonard "Bad Boy" Garcia: 27, 5'10, 155, 14-2-0
Cole Miller was a lightweight on season 5 of the Ultimate Fighter and we’ve got a whole theme of former TUF cast members fighting on this show. Miller was eliminated from TUF by Joe Lauzon after defeating Monsta Lobsta Alan Berube in his first fight. On the TUF 5 Finale, Miller took on Andy Wang winning by TKO in 1:10 of Round 1.
Garcia has 2 fights under his UFC belt. He’s suffered a decision loss to Roger Huerta in a slugfest at UFC 69. The fight was one of the better of the whole year and to reward Garcia, UFC decided to feed him Monsta Lobsta Alan Berube on the TUF 5 Finale. It was a feeding alright as Garcia put an owning on Berube winning by submission at 4:22 in the first round. So both men submitted Berube in the first round, only Garcia’s happened in a fight that wasn’t an exhibition. However, that makes them both heroes in my eyes because Berube annoyed me to know end.
Garcia showed a willingness to stand and trade with Huerta back in April. Both of these men prefer to go the submission route which tells me that this fight will eventually end up on the ground. Another tough fight for me to call because I like both guys. I am going to go with Garcia based on the flimsy premise that he’s a bad boy. A prediction I’m more confident in is that this will be another fun fight while it lasts.

Welterweight Bout (Dark):
Edilberto Crocota: 24, 6'0, 170, 10-1-1
Vs.
"The Silent Assassin" Luke Cummo: 27, 6'0, 170, 8-4-0
Ah, Luke. Crazy wackly Luke Cummo. Luke was one of the few personalities showcased on Season 2 of TUF and since then has gone 2-2 in the UFC. He lost to Joe Stevenson at the TUF 2 Finale in a really fun fight. He bounced back with a win over Jason Von Flue at Fight Night 4 before losing to Jonathan Goulet at Fight Night 5. In his last bout at UFC 69, Cummo defeated Josh Haynes by TKO in the second round. Luke seems to have a pattern of win one lose one which is good news for Crocota in theory. Reason 1 of many why you should love Luke?

Thoughts on upcoming opponent, Edilberto Crocota? He looks scary. I'd better train my ass off.

As for Crocota at UFC 70 he made his Octagon debut and was on the losing end to England’s Paul Taylor. That was the first loss in Crocota’s MMA career. If I’m Luke, I’m scared that this man trains boxing with Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira and Anderson Silva. Hell, I’m not Luke and I’m still scared.
Luke is just one of those guys who it is hard to pick against because he’s such a scrapper. He hung tough with Joe Stevenson at a time when nobody gave him a hope in hell of doing so. Still I’m going to take Crocota in a mild upset just to be different. He’d better win if he wants to be brought back going 0-2 in your first 2 UFC bouts is a tough thing to recover from.

Lightweight Bout (Dark):
"Mighty”"Joe Veres: 29, 5'6, 155, 5-1-0
Vs.
Gray "The Bully" Maynard: 28, 5'8, 155, 3-0-1
This is Veres’ debut in the UFC. According to his profile, Veres did some High School and college wrestling and decided against Olympic training. He’s been fighting since 2002. He lists his strengths as wrestling, power and striking. His favorite technique is belief in himself which I didn’t know was a technique. I must say thought that I don’t usually dig nicknames, but Mighty Joe Veres seems to work.
Gray Maynard was another cast member on season 5 of the Ultimate fighter. He made it all the way to the semis on that show before falling to eventual winner Nate Diaz. Maynard is a great wrestler who trains with Randy Couture which seems to benefit people for some hard to explain reason. Maynard is coming off of a no contest with Rob Emerson at the TUF 5 Finale where the NSAC ruled that both he and Emerson had been knocked out on a big Maynard slam.
I’m picking Gray Maynard because of familiarity and his strong wrestling background. Veres could surprise me but that’s the choice for this one.

Welterweight Bout (Dark):
"The Road Warrior" Jonathan Goulet: 28, 6'0, 170, 19-8-1
Vs.
Dustin Hazelett: 21, 6'1, 170, 11-3-0
This was originally supposed to be Goulet Vs. Mike Swick in the latter’s first fight at Welterweight. However, Swick pulled out due to injury and is replaced by Hazelett. It sucks to be Dustin Hazelett. He takes a fight on short notice, he’s known for having entertaining fights in the Octagon and yet when he is named the replacement the fight is dropped to dark status.
Goulet is making his return to the UFC after more than a year away. He stands at 2-2 in the Octagon, defeating Jay Hieron and Luke Cummo with losses to Duane Ludwig in 11 seconds and Josh Koscheck. Goulet fights a lot in the TKO promotion in his home-country of Canada.

Goulet has a brutally honest assessment of his opponent, I’ll give him that.

What are your thoughts on your opponent, Dustin Hazelett? I don't even know him but I don't care. Maybe he's good, maybe not; I don't know what it's going to happen during that fight, but what I want to do is to push the pace and punish him because I need the win.

Allow me to introduce Mr. Goulet to his opponent Dustin Hazelett. Hazelett started off with a loss to Tony DeSouza in his UFC debut at Shamrock-Ortiz III, the final chapter. He has rebounded with wins over Diego Saraiva and Stevie Lynch this year.
Goulet likes to stand, Hazelett looks for submissions. I’m going to go with Goulet in this fight due to preparation time, though if Hazelett comes in with a chip on his shoulder for being demoted to dark fight status, that could be trouble. Goulet by second round KO.

Middleweight Bout:
Nate "The Rock" Quarry: 35, 6'0, 185, 14-2-0
Vs.
Pete "Drago" Sell: 24, 5'11, 185, 7-4-0
Quarry was a participant on season 1 of the Ultimate Fighter but had to withdraw from the competition due to an injury. He ran off a string of 3 successive victories in the UFC at the TUF 1 Finale over Ludune Sincaid, at UFC 53 over Shonie Carter and at Fight Night 1 over his fight night 11 opponent Pete Sell. This earned him a shot at Rich Franklin’s Middleweight title at UFC 56 on 11/19/05 in which Franklin fustigated him in 2:34 of Round 1. Quarry was absent from the UFC for quite awhile and is back almost 2 years later. It was injuries that set Quarry back and kept him out for so long.
Sell was a cast member on TUF Season 4 ‘The Comeback’. He debuted at UFC 51 defeating Phil Baroni by third round submission. The loss to Quarry followed in August of ’05. On the TUF 4 Finale he lost to Scott Smith in one of the craziest finishes you’re ever going to see when he wounded Smith with a shot charged in for the kill and was knocked out. His last fight was a UFC 69 loss to Thales Leites.
Hopefully, this fight lasts longer than the first time these met when Quarry finished him in 42 seconds. I think this is it for Sell in the UFC unless he wins which means I think this is it for Sell in the UFC. Quarry is really talented and it will be good to see him back.

Lightweight Bout:
Junior Assuncao: 25, 5'9, 155, 6-2-0
Vs.
Nate Diaz: 22, 6'0, 155, 6-2-0
Diaz is the younger brother of Nick Diaz who was victorious on Saturday’s EXC show from Hawaii. Diaz was also the winner of season 5 of TUF defeating Manny Gamburyan in the finals back in June. Nate is also a much less hate inspiring fighter than older brother Nick.
Assuncao made his UFC debut at UfC 64 losing to Kurt Pellegrino via submission. At UFC 70 back in April of this year, he submitted David Lee in the second round. I’m sure even though nobody would admit it that Assuncao is an opponent to allow Diaz to showcase his stuff. Unfortunately, it may not end up going that way.
Both guys are jiu-jitsu practitioners but both also have no problem standing and trading. I’ve got a funny feeling we could see an upset but I’ll take Diaz by second rund submission. I just think he’s the better fighter.

Middleweight Bout:
Terry Martin: 26, 5'9, 185, 18-2-0
Vs.
Chris "The Crippler" Leben: 27, 5'11, 185, 15-4-0
Terry Martin is a prime example of what a switch in weight class can do for a guy. Martin started off his UFC career with back-to-back losses to James Irvin and Jason Lambert at 205. He dropped to Middleweight and fustigated Jorge Rivera at UFC 67 winning in 14 seconds. He followed that up with a TKO of Ivan Salaverry at UFC 71 in May.
Leben is another cast member from the Ultimate Fighter’s first season. He started off 5-0 in the UFC with wins over Jason Thacker, Patrick Cote, Edwin Dewees, Jorge Rivera and Luigi Fioravanti. Then it happened, Leben faced Anderson Silva in his UFC debut and was flattened in 0:49 in June of last year. He rebounded with a victory over Jorge Santiago in August. He has since lost back to back fights to Jason MacDonald at UFC 66 and then Kalib Starnes at UFC 71. So Leben really needs a win here.
There’s no question as to what this is going to be. Leben likes to stand and Martin has very heavy hands. Don’t expect a battle of ground work and Jiu-jitsu or wrestling and submissions. So when both guys like to bang and are going to bang, who wins? I’m predicting Martin, his KO power is outstanding and Leben hasn’t been the same since being on the bad side of an Anderson Silva beating.

Lightweight Bout:
Din "DinYero" Thomas: 30, 5'9, 155, 23-7-0
Vs.
Kenny "KenFlo" Florian: 30, 5'10, 155, 9-3-0
Florian was the Welterweight runner-up on the Ultimate Fighter season 1 losing to Diego Sanchez in the finals. Hatred of Florian’s nickname aside, this man has really improved since the 5 round beating he took from Sean Sherk at UFC 64 to crown a lightweight champion. He’s finished Dokonjonosuke Mishima at Fight Night 9 in April and then Alvin Robinson back in July at UFC 73. Florian is a late replacement in this match for Spencer Fisher. As much as I was looking forward to that, I want to see this one even more.
Din Thomas was on TUF 4 and has a 5-2 UFC record. He’s lost to BJ Penn and Kaol Uno but does hold a victory over current Welterweight champ Matt Serra via majority decision.
I mentioned in the last fight that it would be contested on the feet. Well, this one is likely headed to the ground to be a battle of grappling and submissions. They’re not going to be afraid to stand for awhile but I think it will hit the ground sooner rather than later. So the question is who’s better? It is a close one but I believe that while Florian is a very tough opponent and a win in this fight wouldn’t shock me, Thomas is in the next class above. This could be a key determining fight in the race to possibly crown a new Lightweight champion should Sean Sherk’s appeal be denied. I’m going to take Thomas but I never do this, so this should tell you how close I think it can be, I’ll take Thomas by split decision.

Welcome to my Unforgiven 2007 Predictions. The more things change in WWE, the more they stay the same and the more that sucks ass. I’m back and so is my 1979 United States Quarter to do battle in Round 5 of Hooligans Vs. Coins.

WWE Tag Team Championship: Deuce and Domino Vs. Matt Hardy and MVP
If I were going to watch any WWE programming it would be the Matt Hardy and MVP dynamic. I know eventually, one will cost the other the tag titles and they’ll have their U.S. title match. I just don’t think now is that time, they can do so much more with it. I’m going to predict a victory for the team that doesn’t suck.

World Tag Team Championship: Paul London and Brian Kendrick Vs. Lance Cade and Trevor Murdoch
It is time for the other brand’s tag title match. I care about MVP and Hardy don’t care about this. I’ll pick the Rednecks to beat the Cruiserweights. Why, because I want to move to the next match.

Carlito can't be DQ'd: Carlito Vs. HHH
Carlito can’t be DQ’d but HHH sure can be. That would suggest that HHH is going to be DQ’d but that’s too obvious for me. I’m going with an even more obvious choice which is that HHH overcomes the odds and defeats Carlito by near fustigation.

World Championship: Rey Mysterio Vs. Batista Vs. The Great Khali
Ok, here’s how I’m doing this with the coin. I’m flipping between the 2 challengers and then between the winner of that and Khali. Ok, now that I’ve explained that lets get to reality. Rey isn’t getting the title because people want to see it. Big Dave isn’t getting the title because with where they’re going next they’ve already been there. So, that leaves Khali who drops the gold to Undertaker eventually.

WWE Championship: Randy Orton Vs. John Cena
I can see the headlines now on all the sports sites. Wrestler, involved in signature pharmacy scandal, wins WWE’s top championship. I can only see that in my head. John Cena has held the belt since last year’s Unforgiven and will be a day shy of a year at this show. I think they should reward him by letting him make the 1 year plateau. I think Cena’s destiny is not to lose the belt to Randy Orton, no matter how much Ric wants it to be so and cries like a girl when it doesn’t happen. I changed my mind at the last minute at SummerSlam even though I was proven right, but not this time.

I’m not watching this show no matter how bored I am, besides the Patriots and Chargers is the Sunday Night Football game and that will interest me more than last week’s Cowboys-Giants game did head-to-head with No Surrender.

Tomorrow, Saturday, is EXC 'Uprising' on Showtime. I'll have play-by-play for the site starting at 10 PM ET.

However, before that we've got some previews and predictions featuring: Euan, Mark Danger, Myself and a mystery man making his return to the pickem game. There's still time to get your picks in before the show, and remember to flip those coins.

EliteXC's 'Uprising' Preview and Predictions

Reminder to the staff, time is running out and Euan is the only brave one thus far.

Welcome to my predictions for EXC ‘Uprising’ which will air on Saturday 09/15 on Showtime. I’ll have live coverage of the Showtime portion, but the Proelite.com portion and I may not yet be on speaking terms.

Anyway, lets break it down and the 1979 United States quarter is back for another humbling. The quarter I’m using is 2 years older than me, which is kind of creepy.

Bantamweight Bout: Albert Manners Vs. Tyson Nam
Manners’ nickname is “Always Bad” because I guess his Manners were always bad as a child. If this is true, I’m going to pick him to win because to a man with bad manners breaking the rules is no big deal. So Manners will win by kicking Nam in the testicular fortitude.

I’ve got no idea but it takes a big man to admit when he’s got no idea. Chad has a very long last name. It is the type of name that might prevent me from picking him due to not wishing to type it more than once. But Mark Danger always says I’m hardcore so…

Bantamweight Bout: Mark Oshiro Vs. Nui Wheeler
Sure, Wheeler is making his MMA debut but that’s not altogether a bad spot. As crazy as it seems, people do actually win their debut fights. In fact, I lean toward picking a guy in his debut because it isn’t like his opponent has a lot of tape to study. I’m not leaning that way in this one so watch Wheeler own Oshiro.

Middleweight Bout: Mark Kurano Vs. Jose “bomber” Diaz
Kurano is making his MMA debut. He and Gina are probably related even though they don’t even spell their last name close to one another, but who are we to consider minor details such as that when writing one of these columns?
If Jose Diaz is anything like Nick Diaz, he’d better hope not everyone on the card is drug tested. I’m going with Kurano because hell Diaz only has 1 fight whereas in the above match Oshiro has 9. Yes, I freely admit to having 0 clue on any of the dark fights and no, I don’t have the good sense to just not make a pick.

Middleweight Bout: Jeff Cox Vs. Kala Kolohe Hose
This fight allows me to practice 2 of my scientific prediction principles that have been proven to work a percentage of the time. The first is when in doubt go with the man who’s name is cooler. The second is to pick against the guy with the bad nickname. Fortunately in this fight, I can do both because Kala Kolohe Hose is a cool name and “Pee Wee” is kind of lame.

Women’s Bout: Gina Carano Vs. Tonya Evinger
Now we’re in the fights I know something about. Evinger at the press conference for this fight on Thursday said she’d be glad to make out with Gina or knock her out which ever Gina wants. I personally don’t think that Carano should get a vote and it should be my choice. However, we’re getting off the point here and not talking about the actual fight and you should know by now I am against that practice in my fight predictions column. So anyway, the fight.
Evinger is a wrestler by skill and Carano is a Mui-tai fighter and a pretty good striker. I wasn’t really all that impressed with Carano’s ground game against Julie Kedzie and so if Evinger can get her there we could have trouble, and by we I of course mean Gina. I’ve seen nothing to suggest that Evinger can compete on the feet but when it comes to striking it only takes one good one. I’m going to take Carano but Evinger winning wouldn’t surprise me in a single way.

Welterweight Bout: Jake Shields Vs. Renato Verissimo
In this fight you’ve got a couple of guys who both like to keep things on the ground. Usually that’s where fights like this end up with one looking to prove he’s the more dominant fighter on that level but sometimes it takes awhile because they want to see if they can expose a striking weakness in the other.
I think highly of Shields and believe he’s the best Welterweight not in the UFC or the WEC. EliteXC is hoping Shields’ next fight is for a Welterweight Championship.
Verissimo isn’t someone to be looked past however. He trains with BJ Penn and has some experience in some of the bigger promotions including an appearance at UFC 48. A knock on Shields is that he’s had trouble finishing fights and while he’s beaten some big names he’s not finished any of them. I believe that there’s a first time for everything and Shields has something to prove.

Middleweight Bout: Riki Fukuda Vs. Joe Villasenor
I first saw Riki Fukuda at the first EXC show in February and he was impressive even if his opponent left a lot to be desired. However, the issue isn’t Fukuda it is Joe Villasenor. I picked him over Robbie Lawler at Pride 32 and he was flattened. I picked him to lose to David Loiseau at the first EXC show and he was victorious. I picked him to defeat Ninja Rua for the EXC Middleweight title in June and he lost. Since I’ve been making MMA Predictions, I’m 0-3 with this guy and I don’t have that bad of a record with anyone else, though I’m 0-2 in Randy Couture fights.
Villasenor looked good in the first round of the Rua fight on his feet but it fell apart in the second. I must admit though to being gunshy about picking this fight. Even though we’ve got a horrible record together I do enjoy watching Villasenor fight. I guess since I like the guy the easiest way to ensure a victory is to pick Fukuda and so that’s what I’m going to do.

Welterweight Bout: Mike Aina Vs. Nick Diaz
These 2 are both going to want to keep the fight standing. Diaz is making his return to MMA after serving a suspension for observing 420 near and possibly during his fight with Takanori Gomi at Pride 33 in February. Diaz won the Gomi fight but his Rob Van Dam impersonation turned it to a no contest. Aina does a lot of his fighting in Hawaii and seriously, it is Hawaii so who could blame him?
I’m not really a Diaz fan though he impressed me with his initial victory over Gomi who was/is/will be? The Pride Lightweight Champion. He doesn’t have powerful shots but he does hit a lot of them. I think the number of his strikes more than anything else will be Aina’s undoing.

Middleweight Championship Bout: Robbie Lawler Vs. Murilo “Ninja” Rua
I said in the Showtime Media Predictions Poll I participated in that this was going to be a close fight. I still believe that to be the case. Lawler is the Icon Sport middleweight champ after taking the belt from Frank Trigg while Rua is coming off his victory over Joe Villasenor in June.
I predicted Rua by third round submission and I stand by it. I believe that he’s way better on the ground than Lawler is and I believe that the striking may go to Lawler but it is closer than people think. They’ll engage on the feet but if Rua senses trouble he’ll look to take him to the ground and that’s where his advantage will be more clear. I made my prediction of a third round submission over a week ago and have had plenty of time to change my mind. I’ve done nothing but become more certain of a Rua victory.

TNA Wrestling's 'No Surrender 2007' Preview and Predictions

The streak is over. I have not failed to order a TNA PPV since Victory Road 2004. That’s 33 shows in a row I’ve paid money to see in some form or fashion and it all ends with this event. I’ll say there is a slim chance I’ll end up seeing the PPV live and I’ll explain that at the end but as of now I’ve got no intention to do so. So after 33 shows in a row, the booking has beaten the fun I used to have with this promotion out of me. So welcome to the No Surrender 2007 Preview and Predictions. I will once again do battle with my 1979 U.S. quarter.
In a way the quarter has a great advantage over me when it comes to picking TNA. The reason is random chance, the quarter doesn’t follow the booking or understand the storylines or what should come next it just does what it does. I can’t confirm that my quarter sits in on booking meetings but it does think like them.
I’m also giving my quarter another advantage because I just feel like being generous. I’m going to lay out how this show should be booked in my mind and that’s something that would make complete sense. In other words, I’m dooming myself to failure and bet on my quarter to win. Anyway, we’ve got a lot of matches nobody gives a fuck about so lets get to it.

10 Team Gauntlet for Tag Title Shot at Bound For Glory: Triple X, Team 3D, Styles and Tomko, Raven and Havoc, Sonjay Dutt and Petey Williams, Eric Young
and Shark Boy, The VKM, Motor City Machineguns, The Latin American Xchange, Lance Hoyt and Jimmy Rave.
Standard TNA gauntlet rules apply which is 2 teams start out, every minute a new team enters and when it is down to the final 2 teams, it becomes tag rules.
We can eliminate these teams through the favorite process of elimination steps. First teams that have no chance to win for the obvious reasons are: Raven and Havoc, Eric Young and Shark Boy, Lance Hoyt and Jimmy Rave, Petey Williams and Sonjay Dutt. We’ve already sliced 4 teams off just because they’re tossed together just for this match or in the case of Havoc and Raven would be the worst opponents in a tag title match for any team, ever.
Next team to be sliced off is Team 3-D. I know that Mark Danger picked Team 3-D but he’s going to be wrong. Team 3-D is set for a rematch with the Steiners at Bound for Glory and that isn’t going to be for the tag team titles. Now we’re down to 5 teams left. The Motor City Machineguns won’t win because that would be awesome and people might like to see it. Triple X won’t win because it would be the same deal as the MCMG. That leaves us with Styles/Tomko, LAX and VKM as your finalists.
I’m not thrilling on Styles and Tomko, bet you can’t get which half of this team just doesn’t do it for me. So, that leaves the VKM who TNA has a hard on for dispite the fact the team hasn’t meant anything in nearly 10 years and only really drew any kind of money when they were the bit players in the much larger DX group with the more popular Waltman and HHH. It also leaves LAX who rule the world even though TNA doesn’t wish them to do so.
Logic would tell you VKM will win because TNA loves them so much and that’s why they get 78 second victories over the MCMG who have the misfortune of being talented and an act people like and would like want to pay to see in something meaningful. So logic says VKM will win, but that’s TNA logic, not mine. I think the match I would be setting up at BFG could be kind of fun and that the promo between the 2 teams could work real well. They could argue about which team is the better group of thugs. Plus, I’d love Pacman Jones (spoiler for my tag title pick) to take the Gringo Killa. I’d buy TNA PPV’s for life if that ever happened.

I did the coin flip between the last 2 teams LAX and VKM just because I didn’t want to flip to eliminate each team.

I just wanted to write this quick note to tell you all that I have nothing to say about this. I like Harris, Dust-Dust is useless to me, and that is all.

"The War Machine" Rhino Vs. "Cowboy James Storm
I love the James Storm character and if I could still stand to watch iMPACT he would definitely be a highlight for me. This has actually been a fun little feud at least the parts of it that I remember. I know it is really stupid for me to do this considering his PPV record, but I’m going to pick Rhino to finally pick up a win in this one.

Kazarian Vs. Robert Roode w/Ms. Brooks
I don’t know why this match is happening. I don’t know why I should care. I don’t know why I’m supposed to see this on the card and want to pay $30 to see it. I don’t know why I started 3 sentences in a row with that and I don’t know why I don’t just move on.

"The Samoan Submission Machine" Samoa Joe Vs. "The Instant Classic" Christian Cage
If their Destination X main event is any indication this match should be pretty good. I’ve not been watching TNA lately, so I don’t know if they’ve even brought up the fact Christian cheated Joe out of the belt at that show. I’m going to guess not since that was 6 months ago and in the world of TNA that means rouhly 63,000,000,000,000,000,000 years have passed. God bless the guy suing Mike Vick for that amount of money bringing it to my mind and allowing for use on this wrestling preview.
I actually would like to see this match but because of TNA’s black plague of suck the past few months, I shant be at least not paying for it. I remember it was back in June when they were featuring longer matches on iMPACT and seemed to have some decent feuds going I thought the company was starting to find itself. That seems like zillions of quintillions of years ago now. Oh right, the match. Well, it is kind of ashame what they’re doing with both of these guys. It is more of ashame what they’re doing with Samoa Joe. Therefor I hope he wins.

TNA X-Division Championship: Kurt Angle Vs. "Black Machismo" Jay Lethal
I realize this goes out the window if the tag title match ends up taking place before this. So I’m thinking that Angle loses the belt here. I’m hoping that TNA has realized the 1-man, all the gold thing is really stupid and it is time to end that experiment once and for all. So, I see Team Pacman coming out and helping to cost Angle the match to put more heat on the tag title match for later. If the tag title match happens first, Team Pacman could interfere in this to gain revenge for a loss but then that screws up my next pick.
Jay Lethal is kind of an afterthought in this match which is really ashame because I still love the Black Machismo gimmick as though it were my own idea. They never should’ve taken the title off of him in the first place.

TNA World Tag Team Championships: Kurt Angle and Sting Vs. Ron "The Truth" Killings and Adam "Pacman" Jones
I believe that the plan is for Angle to wrestle Sting for the world title at Bound for Glorry. That might be a cool match if they hadn’t given it away on iMPACT back in May and had it go 2 minutes before a countout, yay TNA! They did it to pop a rating and it didn’t even accomplish that, Yay TNA! Speaking of things that were done to pop a rating but didn’t, Hi Pacman!! TNA could use this match to set up the BFG main event by having one of the 2 cost the other the match. I think the story works better if Angle costs Sting the match, losing his second belt of the night without it really being his fault. However, if TNA has given up on the Pacman deal they may not put the tag belts on him. My guess is that they hope Pacman with a tag title gets another mention on Sportscenter cause those always add a million viewers to the next iMPACT. The most, and by most, I mean only interesting thing in this match is whether TNA does a bait and switch and has someone other than Pacman wrestle or how they work around his NFL contract. TNA World Heavyweight Championship: Kurt Angle Vs. Abyss
It figures that the Pay Per View I decide not to order from TnA is likely going to end up being the one where the thing I actually want to see happens. I believe that Jim Mitchell’s Doomsday clock comes up on Sunday and that spells bad news for Abyss. Plus, if Angle is going to face Sting for the title next month, that kind of means that Angle has to retain the title or Abyss gets another 5 second reign. Given how I’ve laid out the prior 2 matches for Angle I don’t see him losing this one, I think a story where he’s already lost 2 belts, what will he do next is pretty interesting. I guess I just doomed it from happening.

So, I’ll not have coverage of this show. However, if Wade gets bored and decides to order this show, I probably will go watch it at his house on the “nothing to do principle”. Now you may think, there’s no way Wade would get so bored as to order this show. May I remind you that back in June, Wade was so bored he ordered Vengeance which was $10 more than this show and which he paid for all by himself because he found no willing co-viewers. So the possibility of him getting that bored again does exist.

Yes, after round 1, we had a draw wherein Euan and Art fell to their coins but Mark and I were victorious.

UFC 75 was round 2, and well...for a different reason, it was another draw.

The results:

1. Mark: 7-2 Vs. Coin (4-5)
   
2. Casey and Euan: (6-3) Vs. Their Coins (6-3)

So Mark was again victorious over his coin and is humbling it overall. Euan and I picked exactly as well as our coins, no worse, no better, all going 6-3. I believe Art was making brownies and thus forgot to make his predictions.

So our records after 2 events:
