NSAC declares bout at WEC 30 to be a No Contest

Send News and Event Results

Donald Cerrone who was victorious over Kenneth Alexander in his debut for World Extreme Cagefighting on Sept. 5 was fined $2,400 and suspended for 8 months after testing positive for the diuretic hydrochlorozide.
He has also seen his victory over Alexander switched to a no contest. Cerrone told MMA weekly that he took the diuretic to flush out his system after a bout with staff infection that also resulted in a case of shingles.

Cerrone becomes the second fighter to have a decision turned to a No Contest by the Nevada State Athletic Commission.
The first is everyone's favorite Marijuana advocate in MMA, Nick Diaz after he tested positive after his fight against Takanori Gomi back at Pride 33 in February.

Babalu fined $25,000 by Nevada State Athletic Commission

Send News

In case you don't know what the fine is for, it is for excessively maintaining a submission hold on his UFC 74 opponent David Heath. Babalu tapped Heath out with a choke but didn't release the hold even when Steve Mazagatti tried to pull him off.

The fine is essentially the win bonus he was scheduled to get for winning the fight.

Initially, he told Joe Rogan that he held the hold to teach Heath a lesson. He then told the NSAC in a hearing that he didn't feel it when Heath tapped.

Babalu was released from the UFC a few days later.

So getting kicked out of the UFC and getting fined $25,000 that was one hell of a lesson David Heath learned.

Renato "Babalu" Sobral issues statement...

Send News

No editorializing from me on this one. I'll just print what was issued and you can decide for yourself.

To My Family, Friends, Fans and Sponsors:

Since UFC 74, I have wanted to speak publicly about my fight with David Heath. I waited to do so, however, out of respect for the Nevada State Athletic
Commission, Zuffa, Inc. and Dana White. After all, it is their efforts that have legitimized Mixed Martial Arts in the sports world and I realize that
my conduct has unintentionally hindered those efforts. For that, among other things, I am deeply sorry.

I have been fighting professionally since 1998. Prior to my fight with David Heath, my professional record was twenty-seven wins with seven losses. Fourteen
of my victories came by way of submission. Not once was I ever accused of holding a choke or submission too long. If anything, there has always been and
continues to be a great camaraderie between my opponents and I after the fight.

Being a professional mixed martial artist is more than a career to me. It is my livelihood and my way of life. Consequently, I am deeply sorry for any embarrassment
that has been brought upon the sport, other mixed martial artists (especially David Heath), my Academy and most importantly, my family.

As if the embarrassment were not enough, my actions during the fight with David and my comments afterwards, have already resulted in severe financial loss
to my family because as you know, in addition to my win bonus still being withheld, yesterday I was released from my contract with the UFC.

There has been much talk about things that may have been said to me by David Heath at the weigh-in. What David said to me at the weigh-in didn’t matter
then and doesn’t matter now. What matters are my comments after the fight. And, regardless of what you may read by so called MMA experts on the internet,
I never said that I purposefully choked-out David Heath. In short, my post-fight comments, while inappropriate, were not intended to be comments about
the choke. Rather, they were intended to be comments about the aggressive performance that I put in.

I did not intentionally choke out David Heath. The first that I realized that David had tapped was when people told me that he did after the fight. When
I finally had the chance to view the tape, I see that he did. When David tapped, I did not feel it. I wish I did for I would have let it go. Instead, I
continued to hold it. Not because I was upset or wanted him to lose consciousness. I held it because I didn’t know he tapped and I was intent on winning
the fight. Holding on to a choke a little long is not an uncommon mistake made in training, and never in my career have I witnessed or heard of an injury
resulting from it.

When I had the choke, I was not looking the referee in the eyes as one commentator erroneously observed. Nor did I hear the referee issue any verbal command
to release the hold. Instead, my head was down to strengthen the move and my eyes closed with focus. As a result, I did not feel the referee tap me the
first time either. It was not until he put his hands on my right shoulder that I felt him trying to separate us. When I felt this, I immediately released
the choke.

After [Friday’s] hearing [with the Nevada State Athletic Commission] I traveled to the UFC’s office to meet with Dana White. Contrary to recent reports
in the media, this meeting was not to discuss my being released from the UFC. In fact, this meeting was arranged prior to my even being released from the
contract. The purpose of the meeting was for me to personally apologize to Dana while at the same time thank him for all the opportunities that the UFC
has given to my family and I. Unfortunately, I was unable to meet with Dana due to a calendaring error Nevertheless, thanks Dana and my apologies.

I am a professional fighter. This is what I do for a living. I do not hold a day job and then train at night to fight. I know nothing else but how to fight.
This is how I support my family.

On behalf of my family and friends, I appreciate the support that you have given me over the years, not to mention in the recent week, and I am hopeful
that I will have the opportunity to fight again in the State of Nevada.

Thank you.

NSAC still withholding Babalu's $25,000 win bonus, elected not to suspend

Send News

They may revisit this situation again in the future but that's the latest stemming from this morning's hearing.

Babalu himself attended the hearing and gave the commission this quote... credit MMAWeekly

“When he tapped, I didn’t feel it. I then looked to the referee, and he shook my shoulder, and then I let him go. I didn’t understand why this whole thing
happened. I’m kind of surprised that it happened, the crowd booing me and stuff like that. I don’t know, maybe it was from the blood. I don’t know. I would
like to say sorry to David Heath and the UFC for bringing trouble to my sport that I love a lot. There’s one thing that I know how to do in my life is
be a professional fighter. I don’t have like a regular job.”

That's quite a different story from, I did it to teach him a lesson. Seems to me that Babalu is the one who had to learn a lesson, and hopefully he has, is or will.

Joe Stevenson update and other medical suspensions from UFC 74

Send News

Turns out that the broken jaw Stevenson suffered in his UFC 74 bout with Kurt Pellegrino wasn't exactly a broken jaw at all.

Stevenson explained the injury in an interview conducted with MMAWeekly.com

“I thought my jaw was broke and it was sore, but it ended up being a broken nose,” said Stevenson. “I have a fracture on my nose. I had a pain in the
upper part of my teeth and I thought that was my jaw for some reason. It was a broken nose, first one ever.”

Stevenson was originally given a medical suspension that was to last until 09/25 with no contact until 09/16 but upon learning of the broken nose, the NSAC has modified it. Now, he is suspended until 02/22/2008 unless cleared by an ear nose and throat doctor in which case he is still out until 09/25 with no contact until 09/16.

Other medical suspensions include...
  1. Gabriel Gonzaga, broken nose, out until 02/22 unless cleared by an ear nose and throat doctor at which point his suspension would run until 10/25 with no contact until 10/10.
  2. Alberto Crane, right medial orbital blowout fracture, out until 02/22 unless cleared by an Ophthalmologist at which point it reverts to 10/25 with no contact until 10/10.
  3. Kendall Grove, Precautionary Reasons, out until 10/10 with no contact until 09/25.
  4. Renato Sobral, Precautionary reasons, out until 10/10 with no contact until 09/25.
  5. Antoni Hardonk, Right Shoulder, must have an MRI on his shoulder and be cleared by a Doctor otherwise his suspension runs until 02/22. If cleared he is out until 10/10 with no contact until 09/25.

I guess David Heath being cut badly and bleeding buckets warrented no suspension. Also, Randy Couture who suffered a broken arm, was not given a suspension either, but has said he is unlikely to fight again in 2007.

Nevada State Athletic Commission withholds half of Renato 'Babalu' Sobral's purse of $50,000 pending review of his UFC 74 bout with David Heath

Send News

For those that don't know the story by now, last night at UFC 74, in a preliminary bout in the Light Heavyweight division, Renato "Babalu" Sobral defeated David Heath by Anaconda choke. That in and of itself was fine, but there is more to it than that. Sobral had busted Heath open with an elbow during the fight and Heath was bleeding pretty heavily to the point some in attendance thought it should've been stopped sooner.
The real issue though is that after Heath tapped to the choke, Sobral continued to hold it even while referee Steve Mazagatti tried to break his grip. In a post-fight interview, Sobral admitted to doing it to teach Heath a lesson for something that happened during the weigh-ins the day prior.
This turned the crowd on him in a big way and disgusted amny in attendance including several fighters.

According to Sam Caplan of 5 Ounces of Pain.com Sobral threw his hat in to the crowd and it was caught by Manny Gamburyan who promptly threw it back.

So the fallout according to Kevin Iole of Yahoo Sports is that the NSAC is withholding half of Sobral's $50,000 purse, he got $25,000 for the fight and $25,000 for a win bonus. At a hearing to take place later more will be decided including possible further punishment. For Sobral, who this author thinks is one of the better Light Heavyweights in the UFC, this comes on the heels of a July 14 arrest down in Florida. This could jeopardize his future in the UFC and by jeopardize I mean completely oblidorate.

The next 2 in the parade of morons...

Send News

These 2 were on the K-1 show this past weekend and tested positive on their drug tests.

Rickard Nordstrand tested positive for Boldenon (Equipoise) and Testosterone (21.5 to 1 ratio).

Zabit Samedov tested for stanazolol (Winstrol V).

The NSAC will be fustigating them in the near future I'm sure.

They have 45 days to submit a written response and will be afforded the opportunity to state their case at an upcoming NSAC hearing.
