Preliminary Results:
The live coverage has begun. Wade and Scott are here, and the food for the fight is supplied by Dominos Pizza.
The 3 bouts highlighted in the Preshow were Jardine-Liddell, Shogun-Griffin and Fitch-Sanchez. Even though they hyped 3 fights we saw each hype package 3-times.
Goldberg says if Liddell wins, it will be him and Wanderlei Silva, I believe he even mentioned December.
Referee: Steve Mazagatti
R1: Starts out kinda slow, but the crowd booing gets them moving. We've got moves and counters and some nice reversals on the ground. Tyson Griffin is the one who got the better of the exchanges, countering all of Tavares' ground work.
Scoring: 10-9 for Griffin as he countered everything and stayed on top and in control the entire round. Really fast paced.
R2: Tavares hits a knee early which knocks Griffin down. Tavares hits some hammerfists as he's got top position. Stood up briefly and then back to the ground and Tavares gets the mount. Tavares locks on a body triangle. Griffin escapes and ends up on top but Tavares traps him in an armbar. Griffin escapes. Griffin starts to land some shots from the top. Thiago gets in to side control and we get more reversals. Griffin has busted Tavares open near the right eyebrow.
Scoring: Tavares' round 10-9 but it is very close and you could have Griffin up 20-18.
R3: An exchange of knees standing before Tavares takes him down. Tavares works for position and it is all wasted as Griffin is able to transition out.
Rogan says that the 10 point must system isn't cutting it.
Thiago Takes Griffin's back for the third time and again Griffin is able to escape.
Hell-of-a-fight!!!
Scoring: Tavares 10-9 but it is very close. Tough one to judge, I have it 29-28 for Tavares but if you have it 30-27 for Griffin I won't argue, though I believe round 2 was clearly Thiago's. 29-28 Tavares
Winner: Tyson Griffin - Unanimous Decision (29-28m 30-27, 29-28)
Nobody got Hamilled here, I really do have no issue with the decision.
Griffin says words to Rogan, none of them are consequential.
They showed Wanderlei Silva in attendance, he got a big pop. Goldberg did say he'd fight Liddell in December if Liddell wins tonight.
UFC 77 'Hostile Territory' Promo. Silva-Franklin, Vera-Sylvia are the top bouts.
I want Euan to respond to this comment Rogan made about Lyoto Machida. "He looked great against Sam Hoger, he looked great against David Heath".
Referee: Big John McCarthy
R1: Fight is standing at first. Machida hits a body kick and Nakamura goes for a judo move but ends up slipping and on his back, Machida goes in to half guard. Kaz is able to escape and get back to his feet. A whole bunch of not much happens for awhile before Kaz ends up back on his back.
The last fight, this is not. End of the round finally comes.
Scoring: 10-9 for Machida, Next!!!
R2: Machida comes out aggressive in round 2, takes Nakamura down and eventually ends up in the mount. A rear naked choke is hooked and then lost by Machida. Still on the mat, Machida presses Nakamura against the cage and is laying in some shots. I've decided I want to see Razor Ramon HG get in to MMA. Fuuuuuuuu~!
Finally it ends up back on the feet and Nakamura hits his best shot of the round. Its too bad there's only like a minute left. Nakamura gets Machida down and that's how the round ends.
Scoring: Machida 10-9, vast improvement over round 1.
R3: Nakamura comes out the aggressor in the third thorwing some jumping kicks and the like. They end up on the ground with Machida in the mount position.
Euan needs to respond to this Rogan comment as well: "There's a lot of people at 205 in the UFc, they don't want anybody boring."
Nakamura is bleeding and Machida is in control and is going to grind his way to a decision. The crowd starts booing and Machida picks up the pase. Nakamura hits an elbow at about the 20 second mark but it is too little too late.
Scoring: Machida 10-9, 30-27 in the fight.
They showed Silva again and it pops the crowd.
Winner: Lyoto Machida Unanimous (30-27) decision.
Fight was ok but not what I'd call good or something I want to see again.
Referee: Herb Dean
R1: Diego charges in for a takedown right away. Not a lot of stuff happens after that to the point that the crowd starts to boo. Diego takes Fitch down but can't hold him, they get up and Fitch takes Diego to the ground. Diego hooks an armbar but has to let it go as he takes some knees to the body.Fitch keeps hitting shots and Diego keeps going for submissions.
Scoring: Close round maybe 10-9 for Sanchez.
R2: Fitch takes Diego down and in to half guard. Fitch tries an anaconda choke but lets go quickly. Back up and Sanchez catches a kick and takes Fitch down. Fitch reverses position and gets Diego's back. Now its Diego that has the top position, this is turning in to quite the fight. Fitch reverses and ends up on top and is laying in the punches and hammerfists.
Diego is cut open and the round ends.
Scoring: Fitch takes the second 10-9. I've got it 19-19 going in to the third.
R3: Fitch tries a high-kick but Diego blocks. Diego ends up hooking Fitch in a guillotine and Fitch just fights and fights and fights his way out to a crowd pop. I love this fight.
Fitch starts landing some shots to the body. Diego tries more stuff as Herb Dean calls for them to work more. Crowd starts booing at the 1:30 mark. Diego tries for another Kamura.
Diego hooks a triangle but Fitch is able to escape and get back on top. This round ends and this was 1 motherfucking awesome fight!!
Scoring: Diego had the 2 submissions so I give him the round 10-9, 29-28 Sanchez.
Winner: Jon Fitch split (30-27, 28-29, 29-28) Decision.
Rematch motherfucker!! I loved this fight, and since I predicted a Fitch victory I'm not going to argue with the result. No Hamilling here, and Rogan's first question to Fitch is about the 10 point must system.
Referee: Steve Mazagatti
R1: Fun fight so far. They trade some leg kicks for a bit before it ends up on the ground with Rua in control. Forrest uses his closed guard to neutralize Rua and get up. Forrest takes Rua down and they fight more on the ground before moving back up. Forrest tries defending another Rua takedown and finally he goes down.
Scoring: Close round, very close, but Rua 10-9.
R2: Forrest starts with the jab and Rua goes for another takedown. Forrest tries a guillotine but doesn't get it. Forrest defending himself well on the ground. Rua with a big right. Forrest able to make his way back to his feet. Griffin takes Rua down. Rua takes a couple of deep breaths. Forrest hits a leg kick and his corner telling him that Rua is gassing. Griffin stuffs a takedown and tkaes Rua's back but only briefly. Forrest is landing some nice shots and Rua is looking at the clock.
Scoring: 10-9 for Griffin, 19-19 going to the third.
R3: Forrest hits another inside leg kick. A Rua takedown leads to nothing but crowd booing. Forrest going for a submission and has Rua in trouble but Rua is defending himself. Forrest nails some good punches from half guard. Rua gives up his back again to Griffin. Forrest hits some knees to the body. Forrest Griffin chokes out Shogun with about 15 seconds remaining. Randy Couture is a genius.
Winner: Forrest Griffin - Submission (Rear Naked Choke) 4:45 R3
Forrest Griffin has arrived. Jackson's next challenger?
Forrest thanks Rua for being a bad man. Then he tanks a bunch of other people and does the wacky Forrest interview.
Referee: Big John McCarthy
R1: They immediately go to the ground!!! Ha, fooled you. Standing with Jardine hitting some leg kicks and strikes, while Liddell makes him chase, which is the Liddell way of course. Jardine hits some more leg kicks and more strikes. Liddell is poked in the eye, which is usually what he does to guys. Liddell lands an uppercut and eats a right. Liddell starts to press with some punches but then Jardine hits some leg kicks.
Scoring: Jardine seemed to me to do the most damage, so his round 10-9.
R2: Jardine hits a body kick and then floors Chuck with a big right. Liddell gets up right away and takes another body kick. Jardine is clearly gaining confidence as this fight goes on. Keith hits another big right. Jardine with another leg kick and another, there's a welt on the left side of Liddell's body, he'll feel this for awhile. Jardine goes down and Liddell pounces. A knee and a spinning back fist. Jardine up and hits another body kick, it will suck to be Chuck in the morning. Another body shot and then another leg kick from Jardine they're clearly effective. Jardine is scoring more but seems the more tired of the 2.
Scoring: Jardine 10-9, 20-18 in the fight.
Chuck ended the round by going to the wrong corner.
R3: Thunderous leg kick by Jardine and another and a third from Jardine. Jardine is targetting the same spot with those kicks and has hit at least 5 in the round, and follows the last with a left hook. Jardine is just teaing off with kicks and Liddell can do nothing. Now he nails a couple of big shots with his fists. A flury ends the round, and we go to the judges.
Scoring: Jardine 30-27.
Winner: Keith Jardine split (29-28, 28-29, 29-28)
The right decision. You can title this show, The Ultimate Fighters arrived.
My Thoughts: An awesome UFC event with only 1 clunker of a fight. A question arises as to what is next for Liddell and Wanderlei Silva but this night signaled to me that you can't call the TUF guys lesser fighters.
