Changes to UFC 78 'Validation'

Send News

UFC has failed in their efforts to get a working visa for Hector Lombard so the match with he and Karo Parisyan is off.

Parisyan will now take on Ryo Chonan who was scheduled to face Thiago Alves in a non-televised bout. Alves will instead face Chris Lytle.

Lombard out of match with Parisyan at UFC 78

Send News

This is according to Lombard himself in an interview with Sherdog.

He has been Denied entry in to the United States due to only having a Cuban passport. Lombard's being unable to enter the country makes it that much more difficult to fight Karo Parisyan on 11/18.

I'm now thinking that even though this card has some intriguing matchups, that it is cursed.

UFC 76 'Knockout' quick thoughts: The Light Heavyweight Division is a mess

Send News

I'd say that my heading is a pretty good indicator as to what I think is the biggest story coming out of UFC 76.

Lets look at the questions in order of importance?

  1. Who's next for Rampage?
I believe the answer to that question is Forrest Griffin. All of the other challengers have either suffered losses recently, Liddell, Rua or are busy with other things, Tito and Rashad. Jardine is possible but I'd think the fact Forrest has 2 wins in a row makes him the top challenger to Rampage at this point.

  2. What's next for Chuck Liddell?
This is an interesting question because he did lose 2 fights in a row and all night Mike Goldberg kept saying that if Liddell won he'd face Wanderlei silva in December. Fact is I really don't know what the UFC is going to do with Chuck next. I suppose they could still try the Silva fight but Goldberg was so insistant chuck needed a win it might be hard for them to go to that fight just yet.

  3. What about Wanderlei Silva?
Again, it is a case where you've got some guys who are occupied in the coming months and others you don't know what to do with at this point. If I'm the UFC, I give serious consideration to a Jardine Vs. Silva match. I think it would be a fun fight, and plus I don't really see how the UFC could lose by making that match. If Jardine wins then he takes the top spot for the belt after Forrest and if Silva wins then he's beaten a quality opponent in his UFC return.

  4. What's happening to the pride of Pride?
Mirko Cro Cop 1-2 in the UFC. Since returning Dan Henderson is 0-1. Mauricio Rua 0-1. Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira 1-0 but should probably be 0-1 and Kazuhiro Nakamura 0-1. Its a good thing this isn't the Super bowl of MMA otherwise it would be like the time San Francisco beat Denver 55-10.
Maybe its the differences between ring and octagon. Maybe its the difference between UFC and Pride rules. Perhaps it may have something to do with the fact that no drug testing took place in Japan. Maybe the reason is different for each guy, but the established UFC guys have gotten the better of the newcomers from Pride.

  5. Will people stop looking at Alumni of the Ultimate Fighter as second class citizens?
Forrest Griffin beat Mauricio Rua who many including myself believed was the top Light Heavyweight in the world. Keith Jardine defeated Chuck Liddell who is the former UFC Light Heavyweight champion and one of the most dominant fighters in the history of the organization. These guys didn't beg for legitimacy, they reached out and yanked it for themselves. Guys who use TUF to get to the UFC can't be looked upon as reality show stars first and fighters second, they are clearly for real. Some of us knew this a long time ago but tonight put an exclamation mark on the end.

  6. Is there any fighter who is consistently more entertaining than Tyson Griffin?
He's had 3 fights this year and gone 2-1 and all have been incredible fights and fight of the year contenders. I'd like to see him finish some guys but he's welcome on my TV any time.

  7. What's next for Jon Fitch, Diego Sanchez?
The win will move Fitch up in the ladder of contention. Unfortunately, he's behind GSP and he's behind Matt Hughes. GSP won't get his shot at the Hughes-Serra winner until the spring and it will be longer for Fitch.
You can't have this guy sit out until then, so he's got to fight someone. I believe after his fight in March he said he wanted Kro Parisyan. If Parisyan is victorious in November, set up a Fitch-Parisyan match and have the winner of that face the winner of the GSP match against either Hughes and Serra. That's a more realistic option than having GSP fight Fitch with the winner moving on because UFC sees money in both GSP and Serra 2 and GSP-Hughes 3. So if Karo is victorious in November November, it would give he and Fitch both a legit claim at the next shot. Karo still feels he has a claim at a shot getting injured before his UFC 56 bout and not being granted an immediate match.
As for Sanchez, you could always do Sanchez-Koscheck 3. Sure, the second fight was boring but part of that had to do with Sanchez' staff infection. Otherwise, you're going to have to find someone or bring someone in for that spot. With a log-jam at Welterweight, you wonder if some won't soon be making the jump to the WEC. I'm not suggesting that for either Fitch or Sanchez but for some on the lower level it might be a good idea. Plus, there's going to be an influx of talent in that division after TUF 6 is concluded.

  8. What about the lightweight title?
If Sean Sherk is stripped which seems likely, this is what I would do. I would have Kenny Florian Vs. Tyson Griffin and BJ Penn Vs. Joe Stevenson. I'd either have those be tournament bouts or I'd have Florian-Griffin determine the top contender to a Penn-Stevenson winner. I actually lean toward the second option because if I were doing a tournament I'd have Penn and Stevenson as the top 2 seads.

So there's my look at where some of the things stand after UFC 76. I think it is safe to say my Light Heavyweight rankings need revising.

Bouts for UFC 78

Send News

I mentioned the other day that on Inside the Cage Radio with Matt Cava of UFC Takedown and Sam Caplan of Five Ounces of Pain Frankie Edgar confirmed a fight for UFC 78 with Spencer Fisher. That should be a fun bout in front of a hometown crowd for Edgar.

We've got more bouts for the 11/17 card in Newark, New Jersey.

  1. Lightweight Bout: BJ Penn Vs. TBA
  2. Welterweight Bout: Karo Parisyan Vs. TBA
  3. Lightweight Bout: Joe Lauzon Vs. Jason Reinhardt
  4. Lightweight Bout: Frankie Edgar Vs. Spencer Fisher
  5. Middleweight Bout: Dave Terrell Vs. Ed Herman

A fun little show beginning to develop. A newspaper report the other day also listed this as the event where Tito Ortiz and Rashad Evans would have their rematch.

Top 5 of the Top 5: Welterweight Division

Send News

Welcome to the first ever combat-hooligans.com attempt at a ranking system for the 5 major weight classes in MMA: Heavyweight, Light Heavyweight, Middleweight, Welterweight and Lightweight.
A few notes on how this Is going to work. The panel is 1 person, and that one person is me. My rankings aren’t meant as a sign of all-time contributions, what could be done in the future, or a reflection of who I think would win in a fight between 2 fighters. This is pretty much the “What have you done for me lately” way of ranking things. As a result, champions get ranked hire by virtue of being champions.
I’m only ranking fighters I’ve actually seen. As time goes on this will be less and less of an issue, but I am willing to admit that my not having seen a fighter may be the only reason he’s missing from a list.

We’re going to look this week at the Welterweight Division, maybe the deepest in North America.
Ranking last Updated:

  1. Matt Serra: 33, 5’6, 170 9-4-0
Sure, people will say that he doesn’t deserve the ranking. They’ll say that he fluked his way to a victory over Georges St. Pierre. However, he is the champion and he did win that fight regardless of how you think it happened. He knocked out a man who had never been KO’d before. Can he do it again? That’s a question for a future time, but these rankings don’t reflect the future.

  2. Georges St. Pierre: 26, 5’10, 170, 14-2-0
I predicted a Josh Koscheck victory over GSP at UFC 74. To say I was incorrect would be a big understatement. A dominating performance solidified his position as the #1 ranked (behind the champion) Welterweight contender. He’ll have to wait until 2008 to get that title shot but if he looked like he did against Koscheck it won’t be long before he’s got the belt back.

  3. Matt Hughes: 33, 5’9, 170, 41-5-0
Hughes’ last outing was a decision victory over Chris Lytle in what wasn’t the dominant victory people expected coming off his loss to Georges St. Pierre. However, in fairness, Lytle is a pretty tough opponent who nearly beat Matt Serra on the TUF 4 Finale.
Hughes gets the next shot at the belt in December after his second stint as a coach on the Ultimate Fighter. Hughes is in this spot largely on past accomplishments though he is still dominant enough that another reign as champ is not out of the question.

  4. Jon Fitch: 29, 6’0, 170, 14-2-0
Fitch is on a 13 fight winning streak. His losses have come to Mike Pyle and Wilson Gouveia and he has a no contest against Solomon Hutcherson. He’s 6-0 in the UFC and is coming off a victory on 06/12 over Roan Carneiro who gave Fitch trouble in round 1 but Fitch rebounded to win in the second. On 09/22 he’ll take on Diego “Nightmare” Sanchez who is coming off the first loss of his career to Josh Koscheck. Fitch was a guy who until recently the more well-known Welterweights wanted no part of but a victory over Sanchez will put him right in the mix for a future shot at the belt. He’s an outstanding wrestler who just imposes his will on any of his opponents.
I have Fitch ranked a lot higher than other sites have him in their rankings but I believe it is justified and that Fitch is still somehow very underrated.

  5. Karo Parisyan: 25, 5’10, 170, 17-4-0
Sure, he has a loss to Diego Sanchez who nearly got the last spot. But since then, Parisyan has rebounded with a couple of solid victories over Josh Burkman and Drew Fickett. Plus, when you factor in the fact that the decision in the Sanchez fight was very close (it won the Wrestling Observer fight of the year) and many felt he won, it becomes a little easier to put him in that spot. This is a guy who once earned a shot at Matt Hughes and the Welterweight title but was forced out with an injury and replaced by Joe Riggs. Parisyan hasn’t gotten that title shot back.
His Judo throws make him a fun fighter to watch although I don’t think I need to hear him sing again. If you want to argue for Diego Sanchez in this spot, I won’t argue. If you want to argue for someone else, you can make a case for a lot of guys that’s how deep this division runs.

Fighter on the Rise: Carlos Condit – This guy is really good, current WEC champ can’t help but end up in the UFC someday.
Best Fighter outside the UFC: Jake Shields – Tough to fit him in the top 5 without him beating top 5 competition.

This is by far the deepest division in the UFC in terms of quality contenders. It is so deep, I’ve got to wonder if we won’t see some of the mid-level contenders shifted to the WEC so that they can be focused on a little more. Compared to the UFC, the WEC has a weak Welterweight Division.
Coming next week, the Lightweight division, maybe the toughest for me to lay out.

Previous Rankings:
  1. Heavyweight: 08/17
  2. Light Heavyweight: 08/27
  3. Middleweight: 09/01
