Funk's Corner - Rey Urbano aka Tokyo Tom

Funk's Corner - Rey Urbano aka Tokyo Tom

Rey Urbano was a part of the glory days of the Amarillo Territory in the mid 60's. The top wrestling talent included The Sheik, Tokyo Joe, Ricky Romero, Nelson Royal, Sputnik Monroe, Danny Miller, The Viking, Dory Funk Sr., Myself and starting in 1965, Terry Funk.

According to the Texas State Athletic Commission, Lubbock, Texas was the number one City in Texas in wrestling attendance figures.

The hottest of the heels (No pun intended) was the Sheik, the master of the fireball, and an established heel from the late 50's, Tokyo Joe who had a previous run-in with the law and was returning from prison to professional wrestling. Tokyo Joe was the master of the deadly Karate Thrust.

After a month invested in television making Tokyo Joe the top heel featuring the deadly Karate Thrust and leaving many jobbers gurgling in their own blood and quivering in the ring. Just as Tokyo Joe was ready to face the top faces in the territory, the Texas State Athletic Commission advised us that because of Tokyo Joe's prison record he could not appear in wrestling matches in Texas.

With all that was invested in Tokyo Joe we were stuck for a top heel.

It was my father's idea to bring a friend Rey Urbano to replace Tokyo Joe and carry the heat established with the deadly Karate Thrust. Dad's idea was to call him Tokyo Tom.

For the next three years, Tokyo Tom (Rey Urbano) was one of a few top heels that carried the territory. Tokyo Tom's Karate Thrust was so over that we came up with the first Karate Collar matches and did capacity business.

Rey was a great worker who knew and understood his Karate gimmick and along with the Sheik and his Ball of Fire the Amarillo Territory had a run of fabulous business.

Rey was one of the nicest most sincere "Bad Guys" I have known. Our condolences from the Funking Conservatory to the family of Rey Urbano.

On our website on !BANG! TV we have matches of the Original Sheik throwing his fire ball and his protégé Sabu throwing the fireball.

Funk's Corner - Remembering Jumbo Tsuruta

Send News and Event Results

Funk's Corner - A Tribute to Jumbo Tsuruta

In 1972 my Father, Dory Funk Sr. agreed to supply American wrestling talent for Giant Baba's new company All Japan Pro Wrestling.

Saturday was the beginning of my week off as NWA World Champion. Even though it was my time off, I would wrestle several shots for the Amarillo Territory. I was not working this day but went to Channel 10 Television to see if I could be of help with the production of the weekly TV show.

It was at the KFDA Channel 10 Studio that I met the new wrestler Mr. Baba had discovered who was a Japanese National Champion in amateur wrestling, Grecco wrestling and had competed in college in basketball and swimming. He had also competed in the Olympics in Munich in 1972 in Grecco Roman wrestling. Mr. Baba liked this kid, and had sent him to Amarillo to learn the finer points of professional wrestling.

I remember meeting Tsuruta for the first time. As I entered the dressing room I saw the familiar faces of the Amarillo Territory, Larry Lane, Dick Murdoch, Stan Hanson, one of the best babyfaces of all time, Ricky Romero, Scott Casey, Sputnik Monroe, JC Dykes and his Infernos, Rocky Smith and Frankie Cain.

"Mr. Funk," I heard someone say from behind. I turned and there he was, Tall, lean, and wearing a crew cut. I had to look up to him even though he was slightly slumped over. He said, "Mr. Funk, My name is Tommy Tsuruta, It is easier to say than my Japanese name, Tsuruta Tomomi. I have never wrestled a professional match before in my life. This is my first time, please take care of me."

Tommy Tsuruta was scheduled to wrestle El Gran Tapia, a good wrestler out of Mexico. I didn't know that this would be Tsuruta's first match but there was no changing things now as the cameras of KFDA TV would soon be rolling. I looked right at him and said, "Don't worry Tommy, have confidence, just stay cool and you'll do fine.

Tsuruta went into the ring scared to death, but had a good match against El Gran Tapia and captured the victory in about eleven minutes. Tsuruta became one of my best students and one of the best wrestlers of all time.

Tsuruta learned fast. He had the basic experience in amateur wrestling with a mix of Grecco Roman wrestling (Upper body throws) and great coordination from competing in basketball and swimming. He was also a fine student having earned a degree in Law from Japan's Chuo University.

Tsuruta is the only wrestler ever outside the Funk family to master the spinning toe hold, and is the only one who can throw the same fore arm blow every bit as hard as I do.

One day at interviews I remember Tsuruta telling me his English was not so good and he really didn't want to do interviews. I told him, you must, you are going to be on camera and the announcer is going to ask you about your opponent, "you must say something."

Tsuruta's interview went like this. I know my opponent has a good heart, and I have a good heart too. I am going to do my best. He was wrestling our top heel Sputnik Monroe who had just said, "I will whup that puke just like eatin' boardin' house pie." I don't know what boardin' house pie is, but Sputnik was always going to whup somebody that way.

People in Amarillo loved Tsuruta for his sincerity, athletic ability, and kindness. He didn't have a bad word to say about anybody and his skills in the ring were unmatched. In his first year in professional wrestling, Tsuruta became a top star in the United States, something accomplished by only a few Japanese wrestlers including his boss, Giant Baba.

In the summer of 1992, Jumbo Tsuruta was diagnosed with Hepatitis B and never fully recovered. Tsuruta had a degree in law and earned his teaching credentials in 1994 taking an Assistant Professor position at the University of Portland. Jumbo's health deteriorated, however, as he had been diagnosed with kidney cancer which eventually spread to his liver and by the end of the year He was back in Japan. After traveling to Australia for an operation to remove the cancer, Tsuruta traveled to the Philippines in search of a kidney donor and transplant.

Jumbo Tsuruta passed away in the National Hospital in the Philippines on May 13, 2000 from complications of the kidney transplant.

Now on our website at www.dory-funk.com is a wrestling match between Jumbo Tsuruta and myself from Japan in 1974.

I will always remember him as one of the best athletes and friends I have ever known.

The official in the match is Joe Higuchi one of the best referees in the business.

Funk's Corner - Joe Higuchi, Japan's Great Communicator

When in the fall of 1972 my Father, Dory Funk Sr. agreed to supply American wrestling talent for Giant Baba's new company All Japan Pro Wrestling. The middleman or the "Go Between" person in the negotiation was Joe Higuchi.

Joe Higuchi spoke English well and had excellent communication skills. Joe was one of the best referees in the business. Today we teach many of his techniques in our referee training program. (A good referee is the communicator between what goes on in the ring and the wrestling fans.) (A good referee should have a flair for the dramatic.)

Joe was well liked by foreign wrestlers coming to Japan and was often called upon to communicate for American wrestlers for everything from ordering food in Japan's restaurants to communicating their concerns to the wrestling office.

Joe was most liked because he looked after the wrestlers when they were far from home in a strange country with a different culture.

Joe Higuchi can be seen on our website as referee in a match from Japan between Jumbo Tsuruta and myself at www.dory-funk.com.

Funk's Corner - Sometimes it just takes being with nice people to get your day rolling.

Marti and I had breakfast with Rocky Johnson and his wife Sheila at the Ocala, Hilton yesterday morning.

After attending "The Rock's" movie premier in Miami, Rocky and his wife Shelia were traveling up Interstate 75 through Ocala on the way to Missouri to visit their cotton farm as the harvest season is now here.

Coffee, scrambled eggs, bacon, waffles, grits and gravy along with some fresh fruit went down as we talked about old school wrestling and three hours went by fast.

We have photos of Rocky Johnson from yesterday at the Hilton and of course "The Rock" himself on our website at www.dory-funk.com.

Yesterday evening, WWE's Dean Malenko was a special guest at the Funking Conservatory to watch our wrestlers perform. Wrestlers performing for Malenko included Johnny Magnum, Blain Rage, Cory Squires, Shane Chung, Vickii Von, "The Claw" Claudia Reiff,
Kim Dakota, Flyin' Ryan Air Mitchell with Sandii Skye and Elvis Sharp.

We have stories on Dean Malenko's father, Boris Malenko and photos of myself with Rocky Johnson and "The Rock" Dwayne Johnson on our website.

The next !BANG! TV taping, Support the Troops 20, "Funking Fall Fight" will feature former NWA World Champion and one of Bill Apter's top five wrestlers of all time, Jack Brisco.

Funk's Corner - Does Kurt Angle Have a Weakness?

Funk's Corner - Does Kurt Angle Have a Weakness?

Coming September 9th at "No Surrender," live on Pay Per View, Kurt Angle will defend the X Division Championship against the Black Machismo.

In a World Tag Team Championship Match, Kurt Angle and Sting will face Team PacMan.

In a World Heavyweight Championship Match, Kurt Angle will face the challenge of Abyss.

Leave it to TNA Wrestling to present something I have never seen before in professional wrestling. One man defending three different championships in three different matches.

Is Kurt Angle that good?

Kurt Angle participated in amateur wrestling in both high school and college. In college, Kurt Angle was a two time NCAA Division I Champion. Kurt Angle was a 2-time USA Senior Freestyle champion and the 1988 USA International Federation of Associated Wrestling Styles Junior World Freestyle champion.

Kurt Angle then competed in the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta, Georgia where he won a gold medal in heavyweight freestyle wrestling.

Kurt Angle won his gold medal in the heavyweight class defeating Iranian Abbas Jadidi by officials decision after wrestling to an 8 minute 1-1 draw.

Kurt Angle accomplished all this after being injured in the Olympic trials fracturing two vertebrae, herniating two discs and pulling four muscles leading him to laying claim to have won the Olympic Gold Medal with a, "Broken Freakin' Neck."

After joining TNA, Kurt Angle became the second wrestler to win the Triple Crown. Kurt Angle also makes appearances for the Japan Based Inoki Genome Federation where he is the current IWGP Third Belt Champion (recognized by IGF and TNA as the IWGP World Championship.

Is Kurt Angle good enough to appear in three main events and defend three separate championships against top competition in TNA?

Does Kurt Angle have a weakness?

In all of my years of professional wrestling, I have yet to see a cowboy who couldn't be throwed or a horse that couldn't be rode.

Over Confidence - It is difficult to find a weakness in the wrestling skills of Kurt Angle however at this stage of his career, Kurt Angle could be overconfident in his skills. In facing the likes of Abyss, Team PacMan and the Black Machismo, any mistakes could be costly.

Temper - Kurt Angle is so intense he can blow sky high over small things. A bad call by a referee, a fan's comment from the front row, even a "first take down" by an opponent can blow Kurt Angle's temper.

Fatigue - Wrestling the top talent of TNA in three consecutive matches even with rest in between, can sap energy and leave Kurt Angle vulnerable to failure in execution.

His Wife Karen - Kurt Angle didn't have his wife, Karen in his corner when he won the Olympic Gold Medal. What kind of a man, champion or world class athlete should need his wife to back him up?

Karen Angle needs to get herself back in the kitchen, take her shoes off, give her kids some toys instead of dragging them from airport to airport, wash the dirty dishes, get some dinner on the table, do the laundry, give Kurt the TV remote back and for goodness sake, clean the house up. Karen Angle needs to know her role.

Kurt Angle could very well slip up in his quest to headline three main events at Summer Slam live on Pay Per View Sunday September 9th and look for the cause not to be over confidence, loss of temper or fatigue. However the deciding factor whether he wins or loses could be the interference of his wife, Karen Angle in his professional career.

Funk's Corner - 3rd Report from Wrestling MegaFest 2007

Women's Champion, Gail Kim, Marty Janetty, Al Snow, Sid Vicious and many more, Marti and I made our way to the second room where we came upon the Suicidal, Homicidal nephew of the "Original Sheik," Sabu.

I was reminded of the time Sabu came to the Funking Conservatory's !BANG! TV show and threw a ball of fire that exploded in my face filling the ring with a conflagration that scared the wits out of everyone in the audience. Our referee, Claudia "The Claw" Reiff had her hair burned.
My face was seared from the blistering heat.

Now on !BANG! TV in our report on Wrestling MegaFest, third edition we have video of Sabu refusing to shake my hand at Wrestling MegaFest 2007 with flashbacks to the explosive and mysterious ball of fire released from the hands of Sabu.

Turnbuckle Promotions Wrestling MegaFest 2007 was a reunion for many of the Legends of Professional Wrestling. Terry Funk and I re-unite with Jimmy Hart, the Funks manager in the 80's when we were working for WWE. Being with Jimmy this past weekend brings back memories of Wrestlemania II.

Terry and Jimmy talk about who their favorites are in the entertainment world. Jimmy refers to Terry Funk as the, "Will Rogers of Professional Wrestling." Terry refers to himself as the Walter Mathau of professional wrestling. J. J. Dillon joins the conversation. In 1969 I faced J. J. Dillon in the Scope Arena in Norfolk Virginia wrestling him for the NWA World Championship. After facing Dillon, I recommended him to the Amarillo Territory where in the words of J. J. Dillon, it was his favorite place to work in the business. J. J. also has some comments on his rival in the Amarillo Territory, Dick Murdoch.

Funk's Corner - Second Generation Legend and WWE Producer, Dean Malenko is Coming to the Funking Conservatory.

"You have the most beautiful country I have ever seen. The people are wonderful. The beaches are the best in the world and nature in your country is untouched."

"There is only one thing you don't have here in Australia. You have no heroes. No role models for your children and young people to look up to."

"I, The Great Malenko will fill the emptiness you all have here in Australia. I will be your hero."

As I listened to Boris Malenko do the interview for network television out of Sydney, Australia, I thought, "What a great way to get the heat as a heel and not have to put the country or the people down."

Boris Malenko was one of the greatest heels on interviews I have seen. He was also a box office attraction for Eddie Graham in the Florida Territory. Boris Malenko was the originator of the Russian Chain match.

Boris Malenko's chain used in a match in Florida with Eddie Graham was actually shipped from Florida to the Amarillo Territory and used in the first ever Russian Chain Match in the Amarillo Territory between Dory Funk Sr. and Iron Mike Dibiase.

Boris Malenko (Larry Simon) had two sons who followed his footsteps in professional wrestling, Dean and Joe Malenko.

Here at the Funking Conservatory, we are proud to announce that second generation wrestler, Wrestling Legend and WWE Producer, Dean Malenko will be at the Funking Conservatory Tuesday September 4th to scout wrestling talent.

“The Anabolic Steroid Act of 1990 makes it a felony to use and distribute these drugs. Congress needs to investigate the recent events and find out how big of a problem steroid use is in professional wrestling.”

Funk's Corner Professional Wrestling - Old School vs New School.

On our next !BANG! TV Taping, Support the Troops 19, "Hard Justice," coming Sunday September 2nd, Shane Chung will be challenging Johnny Magnum for the Funking Conservatory World Championship. Johnny Magnum will be facing his toughest challenge yet.

Following is from Funking Conservatory Hard Core Champion, Shane Chung's MySpace Blog.

"Okay, let's talk about wrestling. Lets talk about Old School vs New School. Which is better? I guess it's somewhat debatable. First off we have old school or what my generation calls Old School. Dory Funk Jr., Jerry Brisco, Pat Patterson, Jack Brisco, Stu Hart, Ric Flair, Tully Blanchard and many more legendary wrestlers and icons are considered Old School Wrestlers."

"These men would travel the world on and defend their titles, defend their names and wrestle. Yes Folks, they used actual wrestling moves and hold they would wrestle hour long matches night after night, putting everything they got on the line, all while carrying and building the sport of professional wrestling."

"Ask yourself when is the last time you've seen someone use a short arm scissors, a double wrist-lock, a fireman's carry, a well executed arm drag? Ask yourself that?"

"Now we have new school, Springboard Tornado, DDT's, Hurricaranas from every angle, aerial attacks from the inside of the ring and the outside, not to take away from these maneuvers but matches aren't won in the air. They are won on the mat. Sure they're flashy but are the extra movements necessary."

"Bruce Lee invented JKD for one reason, to take the flashy unnecessary movements out of fighting. To make fighting more effective. What's more devastating, a Hurricarana or a double under-hook supple driving you into the mat?"

"As a mat wrestler you're taught the fastest way from point A to point B is a straight line. In other words, if you are going to shoot the leg, go straight in. Be direct, so any opponent I face is more than welcome to bring the "Air Attack," to bring the flash but while you are down on the mat with "Daddy," I'm gonna be straight. I'm gonna be "Old School," and I am gonna kick your "New School," butt. I will do what I do best.......... Wrestle, in the tradition, in the legacy of the men who built this sport from the ground up."

"Go to www.dory-funk.com and get your tickets for the show (!BANG! TV Taping) on September 2nd. Come see wrestling at its' purest form."

Funk's Corner - The Largest Sports Memorabilia Convention on Long Island Ever.

Friday and Saturday August 24th and 25th, Turnbuckle Promotions memorabilia Convention will have special meaning for many reasons. Just like the wrestling fans, Marti and I will have the opportunity to speak with friends who have been special in our life that we haven't seen in years.

It could also be the last opportunity to appear at a wrestling event with my brother Terry Funk. It will bring back many memories.

When Terry broke into the business, I had already been wrestling two years. As I watched Terry wrestle his first match with Sputnik Monroe at the Amarillo Sports Arena, I knew my little brother had what it takes.

In the early days we teamed together in the Amarillo Territory often. Even though we were individuals and had different styles and separate careers in the wrestling business. I always knew Terry was at my side and when necessary, had my back covered.

Our days in Japan as the premier American Tag Team and our feuds with Abdullah the Butcher and The Sheik were memories I could never forget. As a team in Japan, we were the only three time All Japan Pro-Wrestling World League Wrestling Champions.

Here in America we had separate careers but at times there was a team so dominating that wrestling fans demanded they face the "Funk Brothers." Teams like the Brisco Brothers, Sheik and Abdullah the Butcher and maybe the most dominating team in wrestling, The Road Warriors.

Turnbuckle Promotion's Largest Wrestling and Sports Memorabilia Convention on Long Island will be special as once again I will be making a public appearance with the man who never ceases to surprise and entertain me in professional wrestling, Terry Funk.

Funk's Corner - Bob Geigel, Verne Gagne and Dory Funk Sr. Shoot Out at the Flying Mare Ranch

Funk's Corner - Bob Geigel, Verne Gagne and Dory Funk Sr. Shoot Out at the Flying Mare Ranch

Bob Geigel looked me in the eye and said, "Dory," I am telling you ahead of time, I am going to get your right leg."

We were on the wrestling mat in the garage of my father's home on the Flying Mare Ranch in Umbarger, Texas. (20 miles southwest of Amarillo) Dory Funk Sr. , Verne Gagne and Terry Funk were Standing to the side.

I was 16 years old, in high school athletics playing football and amateur wrestling. I knew Geigel was good, He was a Big Ten Amateur wrestling champion but he was going to tell me which leg he was going to get and then do it?

Geigel was big, strong and rawboned with big strong hands. He had lost the tip of one finger but I think it only made his grip stronger.

As we hooked up, Geigel grabbed my right arm by the wrist and would not let go. He pulled down hard! To keep my balance, I planted my right foot resisting his strength.

All of a sudden there was nothing to resist as Bob Geigel had released my wrist and dropped to my right leg which was firmly planted right in front of him. Bob stepped forward driving his shoulder into by knee while holding tightly to my ankle and in a second, I was on my butt with Geigel on top.

Bob released and let me up then showed me the technique.

Verne Gagne, a former NCAA Champion from Minnesota stepped in and said, "Geigel, you can't do that to me. Geigel turned and faced Vern Gagne. Geigel made a move for Verne's leg but Verne blocked with his weight and a cross face and in a second was behind Geigel in a riding position.

My father, Dory Funk Sr., an Indiana University amateur wrestler and state high school champion, walked on to the padded surface and challenged Verne for a go on the mat. Dad forced Verne back to the edge of the garage where the hot water tank stood. Verne pushed back and Dad released his push, pulling hard on Verne's right arm dragging him face forward and slipping behind for a two point take down.

Geigel was back out on the mat challenging Dory Funk Sr. for a go wanting to even the score. In a scramble, Geigel was fighting for the upper position. Dad's "Wizzer" maneuver fell victim to a half nelson and Bob Geigel was on top. (Wizzer is an amateur wrestling move named for and popularized by Cheif Justice of the Supreme Court, Wizzer White who was also an amateur wrestler).

All three of these great amateur and professional wrestlers had won one and lost one, save my never redeemed victim of Bob Geigel's single leg pick-up.

We all retreated to the kitchen where Mother, Dorothy Funk and Bob's wife Vera Geigel had prepared wild ducks roasted in their own gravy from the morning hunt on the southeast corner of the Flying Mare Ranch.

Talk at the dinner table was about how everyone in the business would have liked to have seen these three top shooters in the wrestling business go at each other.

Congratulations to Bob and Vera Geigel who will celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary this August 21 in Kansas City.

The first match from Support the Troops 18, "Fight For Freedom" is now up on !BANG! TV at www.dory-funk.com. For information on training schedules at the Funking Conservatory, call 352-895-4658.
