MONDAY NIGHT RAW Live from Milwaukee, Wisconsin
Recap by: Erik Anderson
THE BIG NEWS:
Triple H's feud with Vince McMahon intensifies and John Cena gets back at Coachman in a major way.
WHAT HAPPENED?
The show starts out with a recap from last week's Raw.
Coachman is out to the ring and explains that he has suspended Randy Orton for his use of the handcuffs last week on raw. I'm not really sure why a man gets suspended for this since nobody else in the history of wrestling has ever been suspended indefinitely for using handcuffs on a previous wrestling show but whatever. Coachman introduces Mr. McMahon. McMahon explains to the crowd that leaders should be respected. Huh? He then explains that he is tired of Triple H and his recent antics. He announces Triple H vs Carlito and Mr. McMahon in a no disqualification cage match. He makes a pledge that he will win this match up. McMahon then introduces Hornswoggle for an apology. He hugs Hornswoggle and says he is very sorry for the way he treated him the past few weeks. As a thank you, McMahon brings out Melina who apparently has a crush on Hornswoggle now. She tells Hornswoggle that she thinks he is cute and thinks that they should get to know each other a little better. McMahon sends them off for some beer and they leave holding hands. Coachman uses the last part of the segment to tell Mr. McMahon that he wants to be reinstated as permanent G.M of Raw. This prompts John Cena to make his way down to the ring. Security swarms the ring as his music hits. Cena starts by throwing chairs in the ring. He then busts right through the 10 man security team and attacks Coachman. Security then takes him off and McMahon tells the crowd that we are going to have a Championship Surrender Ceremony tonight and it's all up to Coachman on how it will play out. This segment was good for getting over the main event picture but ran far to long and was cluttered with to many superstars.
CODY RHODES VS HARDCORE HOLLY:
Back and forth action to start this match. Sunset flip by Rhodes for the two count. Hard chops in the corner by Holly. Holly gets Rhodes ready for an atomic drop but he flips out of it and gets the Side Russian Leg Sweep for the two count. This is followed by various dropkicks by Rhodes. He feels a little giddy tonight and attempts a springboard body press only to be denied. Holly picks him up for the Alabama slam and thats all folks. Holly got a decent pop from the crowd even after playing heel in this match up. Rhodes does not deserve a push in the WWE as he has very limited in ring ability along with the fact that he can't promo for the life of him. His days in the WWE are numbered, mark my words.
Quick note: Camera is focused on Jerry Lawler and Jim Ross at the announce table as they talk about something rather UN-Important I'm sure. This is where I notice something rather interesting. Lawler is wearing a long sleeve atmospheric shirt with a large Wizard on it? Has anyone else noticed Lawler's questionable choice of Clothing over the past few months? He was wearing a weird Orange tie dye shirt a couple weeks back and I for one am frightened.
A Randy Orton video interview appears on the Titan Tron. He talks about the usual things..... “Cena took the coward way out at the last PPV,” “Mr. Cena is a bum,” “I enjoyed beating up Mr. Cena and I will be the Champion”....blah blah blah. Same old Gag for Randy in this interview. It reminded me of those terrible Triple H interviews during the winter of 2005.
SANTINO MIRELLA VS RON SIMMONS:
Mirella starts with some cowardly brushes to the outside. Simmons moves in for the quick offense and Power Slam. Mirella comes back with terrible looking offense and applies the Camel Clutch. Simmons gets up and goes for another Power Slam but Mirella rolls back and jumps under the ropes and takes off with Maria for the count out. Simmons said “Damn.”
We are backstage with Melina as she explains that she was only going on the date with Hornswoggle because Coachman told her that if she did, she would get a women's title shot. I am glad to see the WWE finally recognizing a belt other than the WWE Championship.
The Highlanders are backstage and want a title shot against Cade and Murdock. This angle might have worked if they weren't buried every single Raw taping for the past few months. Cade declined until further notice so the Highlanders mooned them both. Heh Heh.
TRIPLE H VS CARLITO/MR. McMAHON in a Steel Cage
Two on one tactics on Triple H to start the match. Triple H comes back to beat both men down. McMahon goes for the cage but gets racked on the top rope via Triple H. Carlito uses this opportunity for the low blow on Triple H and throws him into the cage. Commercial break. We come back with a Triple H high knee followed by a face buster. Triple H throws McMahon's head into the cage numerous times and then throws Carlito into McMahon. He goes for the Pedigree on McMahon but Carlito hits the backstabber. Triple H recovers and throws Carlito into the Cage and hauls McMahon back into in the ring. McMahon and Triple H both climb to the top of the cage and exchange some blows. Carlito distracts Triple H and brings him down a little bit. Triple Couldn't recover and McMahon hits the floor for the over the top of the cage victory. Triple H gets mad at this and absolutely destroys Carlito with cage shots and a pedigree on a chair. He really buried Carlito here and made him look like a teenager which is what he does to everyone actually. Nice job burying the possible future of your company.
CADE/MURDOCK VS LONDON/KENDRICK
This match had already started during a commercial break which I don't really see the point of other than to bury the whole match altogether making it seem not as important as matches where the wrestlers are introduced with music. Kendrick starts this out with a great deal of energy as usual. Nice looking drop kicks, side kicks, and even a super kick. As London does a suicide dive to the outside, Kendrick lines up for his finishing move and hits it off the top rope. Highlanders break up the cover for the DQ. Fans hated this.
Melina is in the shower. Hornswoggle finds his way in and peeps on Melina. He ends up chasing her down the hallway after he strips her of her towel. This was a nice comedic skit.
We get a commercial promoting The Condemned coming out on DVD. This was nice as they showed Santino Mirella dissing the dvd completely in between promotional video shots of the movie which was a masterful idea to say the least. This angle built heat on Mirella as well as big promotion for the dvd. More of this needs to happen in the WWE rather than the usual counter-productive angles and skits that end up going nowhere.
Just a quick thought at this point in the show. I really question the WWE and their character in building and promoting a “Surrender Ceremony” that may or may not happen as the main event of the show. This was very childish and they continue to do things such as this week after week.
JEFF HARDY/CANDICE MICHELLE VS SHELTON BENJAMIN/BETH PHOENIX:
Plenty of Jeff Hardy chants tonight as all the fans had green glow sticks in their hands during the match. Hardy was even passing them out to fans as he made his way down to the ring. Flying close line to start the match followed by a nice mule kick by Hardy onto Benjamin. Michelle and Hardy both climb to the top rope and connect with flying dives onto Benjamin and Phoenix onto the floor. Nice spot. Back in the ring, we get a resthold from Michelle on Phoenix. Hardy tags in and hits the whisper in the wind which J.R messes up calling. Hardy tries his luck again from the top only to get power bombed by Benjamin for the two count. Hardy makes a come back but Benjamin drops him with a nice looking drag back breaker for a two count. Michelle is tagged in and hits the Huracanrana on Phoenix followed by a nice chin breaker. We get double team action as Michelle hits the flying leg off of Hardy's back. Hardy gets drug to the floor and side kicked by Benjamin so this allows Phoenix to put her finisher on Michelle for the three count. Best match of the night.
Coachman comes out with security once again. He brings out Cena to forfeit his title. Cena chooses not to do this of course and challenges all of the security guards to a brawl. Lilian gets word that Mr. McMahon has made this into a match where Cena faces Coachman one on one. The bell rings and we have a match. Cena takes Coachman out with a couple of moves and thats that. We learn that Hornswoggle, which we can also consider to be “Mr. McMahon,” made the match.
FINAL THOUGHTS:
It was a relief to see a lot of in ring wrestling on Raw this week. We had six total matches tonight if you count Cena vs Coachman. Overall, this was a good show and made up for the terrible past few weeks. I enjoyed the emphasis on the tag titles, women's title, and the intercontinental title which were securely put in place like it always should be. Great build this week.
