Dan Henderson fighting again in December?

Send News and Event Results

Bubba the Love Sponge mentioned on his Sirius radio show that he ran in to Pride Welterweight champion Dan Henderson in Las Vegas over the weekend. According to Bubba, Henderson told him that he could be fighting as soon as December. Henderson did not mention a possible opponent nor did he mention whether it would be at the 12/08 Ultimate Fighter 6 Finale or the 12/29 UFC 79 'Nemesis' card. He did tell Bubba that a fight at 185 was a possibility.

It is believed that Henderson has one fight left on his Pride contract which he was working under. He and the UFC are negotiating on a new deal, but at last word the sides weren't exactly what you'd call close.

UFC News and Notes

Send News and Event Results

The Canadian press has an article with some quick news and notes which you can read here

Some of the more interesting things they point out is that Brandon Vera nearly walked away with as much money for losing as Anderson Silva did for winning. However, don't forget that those are just released earnings and who knows how that shakes out with bonuses factored in the equasion.

Also, the article mentions that from 03/31 to 09/30 in the state of California there have been 43 drug test failures in the state of California. That spans 100 shows and includes steroids and street drugs.
Now where you can say that MMA has a drug problem is that 33 of those failures were MMA fighters, 8 were boxers and 2 were kick boxers. The article contains a further breakdown of how many people tested for what.

Thanks to Mike Informer for passing that on.

Dana White to announce Wanderlei Silva's first opponent in his return to UFC on TV tonight

Send News and Event Results

That's the word according to Pramit Mohapatra's post at the Baltimore Sun's MMA Insider blog

The announcement is set to come during the 2007 scream awards at 10:00 PM ET/9 CT on SpikeTV.

It has long been speculated that the opponent would be former Light Heavyweight Champion Chuck "The Iceman" Liddell before a loss to Keith Jardine at UFC 76 put that in doubt.

This follows a special where SpikeTV counts down the top 25 TUFest moments in Ultimate Fighter history.

I'll be watching neither.

Current UFC welterweight champion Matt Serra (16-4) is proof that The Ultimate Fighter not only produces top contenders in the UFC, it produces champions.
The winner of The Ultimate Fighter Season 4, Serra plowed his way through the reality show to win a “comeback” shot for the 170-pound title against then
champion Georges St-Pierre. In what turned out to be an upset win of epic proportions for Serra, the Long Island native overwhelmed “Rush” with a barrage
of strikes and stopped him cold at 3:25 of the first round. Now Serra looks to defend his title against the legendary Hughes and secure his own legacy
in the UFC 170-pound division.

“I think this is going to be a tough fight. As a person, I can’t stand Matt Hughes, I don’t like him at all, but I respect him as a fighter,” said Serra.
“You can’t deny what he has accomplished as a fighter, but he basically thinks my last fight was a fluke, like I don’t belong in there with him. I believe
there’s one way Matt Hughes can beat me, but I can beat him several different ways, and I plan on beating him on all fronts.”
Hughes (43-5), a two-time UFC champion with seven combined title defenses to his name, has a deadly ground game that has earned him wins over St-Pierre,
BJ Penn, Chris Lytle, Royce Gracie, and Frank Trigg (twice). After giving up his title to St-Pierre at UFC 65, Hughes returned to the Octagon at UFC 68
in March to take on The Ultimate Fighter Season 4 finalist Chris Lytle. He won via unanimous decision, and ever since then, he has waited for the opportunity
to fight for the title and he wants to prove that he is not only the best 170-pounder in the division today, but that he is the greatest 170-pound fighter
ever to fight in the UFC.

“To me, Serra is just another opponent,” said Hughes. “He’s just another guy that likes to run his mouth. I think nine out of 10 times he loses to GSP,
so Serra did get lucky once, maybe. I think I have a lot more ways to win this fight than he does – I just need to watch out for those looping punches.”

Liddell-Silva back on again at UFC 79?

Send News

According to Dave Meltzer, the fight has been verbally agreed to by both sides.

This is the latest in the on again, off again saga of this long anticipated dream match.

First, UFC and Pride to arrange it back in 2006. Then Silva lost in the Grand Prix and that ended that and then he lost his title to Dan Henderson in February, while Liddell was mowing down Babalu and Tito Ortiz.

Then UFC outright purchased Pride and talk was the fight would happen in September but Silva declined siting the fact he was moving to the states. Plus, at that point Liddell lost his championship to Quinton Jackson in May. Liddell was given a fight in September against Keith Jardine to get him ready for Silva and to fulfill a promise to the PPV company that Liddell would fight in September. Then after Jardine defeated Liddell by split decision, it appeared as though the fight was off.

Talk moved to Liddell facing Mauricio "Shogun" Rua instead before surgery sidelined the Brazilian.

At that point, the prospect of doing Silva-Liddell anyway became more realistic. The feeling is that waiting for the perfect time to do the fight means waiting forever and neither Liddell at 37 or Silva at 33 have that much time. Plus, they are both in the same boat coming off back-to-back losses and fan interest in the fight is still very high.

So why not do the fight anyway?

It appears that the answer is "why not indeed?"

If you don't remember, Guillard made noise before his Fight Night 9 bout with Joe "Daddy" Stevenson that Stevenson was a user of HGH. He then promptly lost to Joe Stevenson in 27 seconds and then promptly flunked his drug test for cocaine.

Kongo-Nogueira unlikely until early 2008

Send News

That's the word according to This article penned by Dave Meltzer for Fox Sports.

It was thought this bout could happen at UFC 79 in December.

Kongo should hope it isn't until early 2035 so he has enough time to find some kind of ground game.

Report: Kongo Vs. Nogueira on tap for UFC 79

Send News

That's the word according to Brian Knapp of the Fight Network

Nogueira is coming off of a UFC 73 victory over Heath Herring in a fight he nearly lost in the first round. Cheick Kongo is coming off of back to back wins in the Octagon with the most recent being over Mirko Cro Cop at UFC 75.

The winner is going to be in line for a future heavyweight title shot.

All I can say is that Kongo had better work on his takedown defense some more.

The card for Dec. 29

  1. Welterweight Championship: Matt Hughes Vs. Matt Serra
  2. Heavyweight Bout: Antonio Rodrigo Minotauro Nogueira Vs. Cheick Kongo
  3. Light Heavyweight Bout: Wanderlei Silva Vs. TBA
  4. Lightweight Bout: BJ Penn Vs. TBA
  5. Welterweight Bout: Josh Koscheck Vs. TBA
  6. Lightweight Bout: Doug Evans Vs. TBA
  7. Middleweight Bout: Dean Lister Vs. TBA
  8. Lightweight Bout: Luke Caudillo Vs. TBA
