VERSUS ANNOUNCES EXTENSION OF PARTNERSHIP WITH WORLD EXTREME CAGEFIGHTING® (WEC™) THAT ADDS 15 LIVE EVENTS AND 20 WrekCage SHOWS TO LINEUP
Network to Air Fourth Live Fight on December 12
STAMFORD, Conn. (September 5, 2007)—VERSUS, the exclusive cable television home of World Extreme Cagefighting® (WEC™), today announced an extension of the
partnership to bring 15 additional live WEC events and 20 WEC WrekCage episodes—a show that features a mix of the top matches from WEC events never before
seen on television and VERSUS’ best live events—to the network. VERSUS first announced the addition of WEC to the network’s lineup of competitive sports
in January 2007 and has aired three live fights and six premiere episodes of WEC WrekCage since its debut in June 2007.
“We are very excited to announce the extension of our partnership with World Extreme Cagefighting, the premier brand in mixed martial arts,” said Marc Fein,
Senior Vice President of Programming and Production for VERSUS. “The WEC has tremendous success in putting on top quality mixed martial arts events which
consistently deliver a solid television viewing audience. The quality of the fights and fighters in the WEC sets them apart from the competition—they're
faster, fiercer, they fight in a smaller cage and they’re only on VERSUS.”
The next live fight will air December 12 and will feature featherweight champion Urijah Faber (19-1-0) as he defends his title against Jeff Curran (16-6-1).
Additional fights on the card will be announced as information becomes available.
"We are thrilled about extending our relationship with VERSUS, a decision which allows us to keep doing what we started in 2007 - bringing the best fights
and best fighters into the homes of millions of viewers," said Peter Dropick, VP of Operations and Production for WEC. "Fight fans will be pleased to know
that World Extreme Cagefighting will continue to put on the most exciting mixed martial arts events in the world and VERSUS will continue to be the home
of the WEC."
VERSUS (VERSUS.com) celebrates real competition in all its forms. Now in more than 74 million homes, the network is the national cable home of the National
Hockey League (NHL) and the Stanley Cup Playoffs as well as best-in-class events like The Tour de France, the America's Cup, the Professional Bull Riders
(PBR), World Extreme Cagefighting (WEC), Professional Boxing, the Boston Marathon and Davis Cup. The network also offers collegiate sports from top conferences
such as the Pac-10, Big 12 and Mountain West. VERSUS features the best field sports programming on television and is a destination for sports fans, athletes
and sportsmen to find exclusive, competitive events that audiences can't find elsewhere. VERSUS, a wholly owned company of Comcast Corporation (NASDAQ:
CMCSA, CMCSK), is distributed via cable systems and satellite operators throughout the United States.
The WEC brand is recognized as one of the premier mixed martial arts organizations in the United States. Founded in 2001, the WEC features many of the most
prominent athletes in the sport of mixed martial arts today. Owned and operated by WEC Holdings LLC., and headquartered in Las Vegas, Nev., the WEC produces
live and taped events annually that are distributed through the Versus network. In addition to its U.S distribution, WEC programming is shown on the TSN

WEC 29 'Condit Vs. Larson' Live Coverage

Send News

I'm here to cover the live portion of WEC 29 on the Versus network. I'm tired and ready for sleep but yet I brave on. Refresh your browser for all the good stuff.

Preliminary Results...

  1. Welterweight Bout: Blas Avena Def. Tiki Ghosn via Rear Naked Choke at 1:01 R1
  2. Light Heavyweight Bout: Steve Cantwell Def. Justin McElfresh via TKO at 0:47 of R1
  3. Middleweight Bout: Eric Schambari Def. Logan Clark via Unanimous decision 29-28
  4. Bantamweight Bout: Antonio Banuelos Def. Justin Robbins via Unanimous Decision 30-27, 30-26, 30-27
  5. Middleweight Bout: Hiromitsu Miura Def. Fernando Gonzalez via Submission due to strikes at 3:31 of R2

If time allows, I'm sure we'll see some of these on the broadcast.

Show opens with Todd Harris and Frank Mir. They briefly mention the 2 title fights and then explain the rules of MMA. Harris then runs down the rest of the card.

Harris describes Varner and Leggett as bitter rivals. Well, if he says so. We hit our first...Commercial Break!!!

Lightweight Bout:
Sherron "Rob Roy" Leggett: 5'8, 156, 13-3-0 Vs.
Jamie "The Worm" Varner: 22, 5'8, 156, 10-1-0
Referee: Steve Mazagatti

R1: A little bit of stuff on the feet and then Varner just dumps Leggett to the floor. Mir is talking about who has better hips, I guess that's to see who is more prepared for child birth. Varner is deducted 1 point for hitting in the back of the head after he dropped Leggett down on his shoulder.
They do a bit more on the feet and then Leggett takes Varner to the mat. Varner has a bodylock and is raining punches and is warned again for hitting in the back of the head. Finally, Mazagatti stops the fight for Varner.

Winner: Jamie Varner - TKO R1

Varner says he'd take a title shot but if they wanted another fluff fight he'd do that as well, it is all about the money.

We go to the Tiki Ghosn Vs. Blas Avena fight. I don't feel as though I need recap this too closely. Tell me, what did Tiki do that was so awesome it merits him being called by only one name? Whatever it was, he didn't do it in this fight.

They show a promo for some movie I don't care about enough to mention.

Featherweight Bout:
Stephen Ledbetter: 25, 5'9, 146, 6-0-0 Vs.
Jeff Curran: 30, 5'6, 145, 30-8-1
Referee: Yves Lavigne

R1: You know what stands out in the early stages of this fight? The lack of noise from the crowd. Curran hits a big right though and that wakes 10 people up. Ledbetter is able to recover from the big shot and spends the rest of the round neutralizing Curran.

Scoring: 10-9, Curran

R2: Ledbetter took Curran to the ground early but Curran is able to work and after a couple of minutes they get back to their feet. I'm a little distracted at the moment talking Sheiky on Stern.
Curran hits a roundhouse to Ledbetter's leg and then sprawls to avoid a takedown.
Ledbetter is in a bad way with less than 10 seconds left and manages to hold on.

Scoring: 10-9 Curran, he had Ledbetter in trouble near the end.

R3: The third is basically each of them trying stuff and countering out but Curran was in more control of the round and the pace and had Ledbetter's arm for awhile though he was able to reverse.

Scoring: 10-9 Curran, fight 30-27 Curran

Winner: Jeff Curran - Unanimous Decision (30-27, 29-28, 29-28)

Curran doesn't really say anything of note. Curran would like to fight Urijah Faber, and I'd like to see it.

Todd Harris drops the Sept. 5 date and says the main card will be revealed later.
Commercial!!!

Urijah Faber was on Stern and they showed some of it. I don't think he played Anal Ringtoss but who can say for sure?

Middleweight Championship Bout:
Joe Doerksen: 29, 6'0, 185, 27-8-0 Vs.
Paulo Filho: 29, 5'8, 184.5, 14-0-0
Referee: Big John McCarthy

R1: An exchange of Jiu-Jitsu technique for the majority of the first with Doerksen doing well for himself but Filho takes control starts to rain down punches and finally Big John McCarthy stops the fight.

Winner: Paulo Filho - 4:07 R1

Filho says nothing of note unless he tries to swear which would rule.

Harris interviews Razor Rob McCullough and Jens Pulver. I would kill to do an interview with Jens Pulver. It is Rob McCullough Vs. Rich Crunkilton and Jens Pulver Vs. Cub Swanson at WEC 30 on Versus Wednesday September 5. Chase Beebe will also defend the Bantamweight title on that show against Manny Tapia.

Welterweight Championship Bout:
Brock Larson: 29, 5'11, 168.5, 21-1-0 Vs.
"Natural Born Killer" Carlos Condit: 23, 6'2, 170, 20-4-0
Referee: Steve Mazagatti

R1: They trade off a bit, then Condit hooks a deep armbar and Mazagatti yells "stop, stop, stop" and the fight is over.

Winner: Carlos Condit - Submission R1

Condit says he'll fight whomever they put in front of him.

Pub Discussion Standings:
  1. Casey: 8-1
  2. Danger: 5-4
  3. Euan: 4-5
