Dr. Keith Lipinski Show Recap - Mitch Ryder, Lightening Mike Quackenbush

Recap by Brian Cooper, BigVanVader.com

Simply Marvelous Mitch Ryder Recap

Keith introduces Mitch as a true king of professional wrestling. Mitch says he has been in wrestling since the Terry Garvin friendly age of seventeen. Mitch always aspired to be like Jerry Lawler until he got into the business and saw what an arsehole he was. Mitch also was a fan of Jackie Fargo as a kid. Keith asks what good advice Jamie Dundee give Mitch? Mitch says none, although says he always was in a condition to perform. Pro Wrestling Illustrated hate talk: Mitch says there is no interest and no need for PWI today. Dr. Keith then calls the PWI crap, Mitch replies that apart from number 327 of the PWI 500 then it is a pile of crap.

Keith asks how Mitch got involved with Chikara. Mitch says he was working for Ian Rotten at the time, and loves working for Chikara. Mitch talks about his wrestling for WCW and WWE. Keith asks about fond memories of WCW Saturday Night. Mitch puts over the great Center Stage saying it gives you a case of the goosebumps. Rider talks about working with The Steiners, Barry Windham and Arn Anderson amongst many others. Keith discusses the Cowboy Bill Watts regime. A highlight for Mitch was wrestling the likes of Rick Rude and Mick Foley. Mitch calls Rip Rogers the 'CHEAPEST MAN IN THE WORLD.' Steiner Brothers rib talk!

Onto WWE. Mitch talks about the Owen Hart tragedy and Vince McMahon's post tragedy birthday celebrations. Keith asks about traveling with Jamie Dundee and the Midget. Mitch talks road stories. Including taping duct tape and eight track tapes to the Midgets feet so he could drive 200 miles! The good doctor demands more midget stories! Mitch gives a MIDGET CHRISTMAS MARIJUANA story ~ yay! Mitch puts over the mindset of the young Chikara wrestlers as great students of the game and sees a great future for the promotion in 2008/09. Mitch name checks Claudio Castignoli as the top indie wrestler today.

Mitch Rider cuts a promo on Lince Dorado,: 'Listen closely to what I'm saying, before I am done with Lince Dorado, he will no longer wrestle in this country, you will know what I'll do to Lince Dorado, and there is no more Lince Dorado then and only then will I be done with him. This is personal, this has nothing to do with the wrestling business, this has nothing to do with anything, he's humiliated me. I'm gonna expose him for what he is. He's in hear under false pretenses, he's a liar, he's a cheat, he deserves to be in a prison somewhere. I'm gonna do everything I can to run him out of the company I love so much, Chikara.' Mitch talks about his prior hatred for Mike Wolfe and working with him in Rider's XCW Mid West promotion.

Lightening Mike Quackenbush Recap

Dr. Keith introduces Mike Quackenbush to the show. Mike talks of the concussion he received prior to winning the Ted Petty Invitational. The injury happened due to his left leg hitting the rope mid-tope. Mike calls it 'the nature of the game.' Mike talks about the different legislation in Illinois with no ringside physician being mandatory. Mike says he is '100% certain' he had a concussion likening it to alien abductions! The original plan was for Quackenbush to be removed from the tournament although Mike insisted but states it wasn't the 'brightest decisions of his life.' He credits the crowds emotions for getting him through and has no regrets saying in hindsight he'd do the same thing again.

Keith asks about concussions in professional wrestling. Mike says a lot of the information has only come to light since the Chris Benoit tragedy and most of the information has come from the likes of Nancy Grace. Mike credits Chris Nowinski for what he says on the topic. Mike says that the attitudes towards concussions were that of a minor injury until recently. He says that he has lost count of the amount of concussions he has had and says it is not unusual for a wrestler to have dozens of concussions during a career. Mike has since canceled a couple of ROH booking including the recent PPV taping. Mike aims to return to the ring for Michinoku Pro and says this is his fifth scheduled tour of Japan with him yet to appear.

Mike calls 2007 his greatest in-ring year to date and goes onto talk about the future plans of Chikara Pro and perhaps touring new markets and future wrestlers he hopes to bring in. Dr. Keith asks about bringing in the feuding Bryan Alvarez and Larry Sweeney to Chikara Pro. Keith urges fans to purchase more Chikara DVD's to hang from your Christmas trees.

Wellness questions! Keith asks if Mike can prevent the usage of Hydra. Mike suspects drug testing for independents could be too expensive. Mike says he is thrilled for his guys that make it big in the pro-wrestling world. Keith asks if we're going to see more of Quackenbush in ROH? Mike hopes so. What about IWA Mid South? Mike feels an obligation to them and will be back. Mike asks all listeners to check out www.currenttv.com for Chikara Pro podcast goodness and of course www.ChikaraPro.com and www.ChikaraFans.com

Ian Rotten Recap

The most professional start to the show as Ian Rotten gives ten seconds of silence followed by the Doctor asking if many boys go to the Rotten household to discuss bookings, angles and the like. Apparently the question is all legit and the answer is not like back in the day. Ian reminisces of CM Punk recording and critiquing his matches and Sabu taking as much time to tell Ian's wife how good the food is at thanksgiving than the time it takes for him to execute a successful Triple Jump Arabian Press.

Dr. Keith asks how Ian manages to keep going with all his dire financial woes? Ian says he tells the IWA fans and they come to his rescue. Ian then goes on to thank the fans of the European WXW to help him get over the death of Chris Candido. 'I get down, I get so pissed off reading message boards,' Ian then shoots on the message board geeks that state the Ted Petty tournament is a technical wrestling tournament. 'The Ted Petty represents everything that Ted Petty was; Ted Petty was a high-flyer, Ted Petty could knock the living daylights out of you, so he could definitely work strong style and Ted Petty was a brawler.'

Ian talks about Eddie Gilbert almost being forgotten today and doesn't wish for the same with Ted Petty and Chris Candido. Ian says that if he went out of business, he'd 'make a lot of people happy for the wrong reasons.' Keith demands names. Ian obliges! Jim Cornette is name number one. That 'beat-nosed ASSHOLE' Danny Daniels is number two, and Don Owens is also name -checked. And the reason? ~ JEALOUSY! Ian rips into AAW’s Daniels big time, claiming that he 'made him.' Ian says he is pleased for Ring of Honor's success but that IWA Mid-South doesn’t get the respect that they deserve.

Retirement talks. Ian can honestly see himself leaving the squared circle as a performer mentioning the longer recovery rates and that he'll be able to book better shows with more time behind the scenes. The future will see more local talent in IWA Mid South than big names. Ian talks about not running Chicago due to having to pay $1,000 for commercials and the never-ending-cycle when funds are low. The two put Chuck Taylor and Drake Younger over as the future of IWA Mid South with Ian giving a first hand account of Drake's recent thumb I mean hand perils and a Peter North comparison.

Ian talks about his fear of the fans not paying to see the TPI tournament and why fans are pissed off at him over Jimmy Rave. Keith asks why Ian is more publicly open now about his business dealings this year? Ian agrees that it is a conscious decision on his part and talks candidly over his problems with J.C. Bailey. 2008 plans ~ Ian plans to host a raffle draw with the winning fan being given a budget with it book their own wrestling show. Ian utters the immortal words of Terrence Funk: 'This ain't ballet,' alluding to whining wrestlers. Ian then discusses Jimmy Jacobs throwing the IWA-MS title in the garbage, and Jimmy coming back to the promotion and how angry this made IWA-MS Jim Fannon (the godfather to his son). When talking about guys working other promotions, Ian doesn’t mind, however Ian says he will always push guys more that are loyal to him over guys that aren't and if you think otherwise then 'you're an idiot.'

Keith asks if Ian watches WWE if he is happy for CM Punk? Ian says he is elated for him and talks about his own goals for the future of the sport and has yet more aggravations. Ian says he hugged Punk at the Candido show and told him to 'go become a millionaire.' Smelly ring gear talk ~ YAY! Ian says the only wrestler he ever booked for himself was Dusty Rhodes. The biggest problems he faces being a promoter is working around other promoters' schedules. Ian then transforms into Ole Anderson stating that everytime a name wrestler leaves he can create another. Ian says he knew Necro Butcher was rejoining ROH for months and wishes the internet would give him some credit. He says that the ROH project is often the same, although it is still spiffing. Ian trashes TNA revealing that the booking gives him a headache!

Deep South feud talk, along with his injured EYE and Freak Show discussion. Then CZW talk. Ian blames John Zandig's ego for the reason the promotional feud wasn't as successful as it could've been, and blames Zandig for a botched scaffold/tables spot. Ian said that Zandig got legitimately upset at some of the CZW fans and tells the listeners to the Dr. keith show why. Talk of the last IWA-MS Philly show and people phoning it in – and what the guys were doing backstage (Philly cheese steak talk)! Ian finishes by plugging this weekends Ted Petty Invitational tournament and several super smashing great IWA Mid South DVD deals at http://www.iwamidsouthwrestling.com

Dr. Keith Show Recap - By Brian Cooper - www.bigvanvader.com

NWA Heavyweight Champion of the World Adam Pearce

Dr. Keith asks the new Heavyweight Champion of the World why the fans call him Repo Man and not other illustrious Barry Darsow gimmicks such as Golfer or Smash? Pearce calls Darsow the sexiest man in Demolition closely followed by the fine specimen of a man, one Mr. Fuji. Onto wrestling death and the woman with the big mouth.

Onto the NWA Heavyweight Championship Tournament of the World. Adam destroys kayfabe by revealing that Bryan Danielson was the initial choice to win before being injured. Adam Pearce presumed that Brent Albright would go over and says that the NWA title 'means a SHRED of what it did in the past,' and that the NWA has been terrible for fifteen years. Adam then goes into detail how the NWA are changing perceptions in 2007. The champ states that TNA didn't promote the NWA name 'AT ALL.'

Pearce puts over wrestling in Puerto Rico and is looking forward to returning. The fact that most of the fans didn't recognise him didn't really bother him. Keith asks Adam his thoughts on Ring Of Honor not recognising the NWA title. Adam says he has no problem with this as he would expect a promotion like ROH to put more emphasis on their own champion. Pearce can't see this changing this in the near future. 'It's not a big deal at all.'

Keith asks the secret of being a good heel in Ring Of Honor. Adam says it is from grass roots level to try and get the fans not to like a single thing about him and to apply the all important NERVE HOLD. Adam talks about being on the beach with a shirtless Bryan Danielson complete with eye patch. The doctor asks for photographs of a sixty year old woman in a pink thong. Gang Wars are discussed. Pearce says he fought the Truth Commission during his jobber days.

Keith asks about defending the title in Japan. Pearce says he did discuss it briefly with Morishima but has other obligations at this moment. More importantly who would Pearce like to do karaoke with? Pearce would choose the Great Muta and tells of a story of Muta fighting Ron Waterman and his MOTHER FUCKER catchphrase. After impregnations by green mist talk, Adam talks about the ROH locker room post-PPV. Pearce says the buy-rate figures might take three or four months.

The two plug the forthcoming NWA tournament DVD release on Big Vision Entertainment in November. Splendid interview with the new NWA Heavyweight Champion of the World. Check out rohwrestling.com and nwawrestling.com.

The Musketeer

Dr. Keith says he has had many World champions on the Dr. Keith Show but he has never had a musketeer... until now! The Musketeer credits Johnny Rodz with The Musketeer gimmick. Musketeer was a huge fan of the Magnificent Muraco. He decided to become The Musketeer due to dreams of becoming an action figure and appearing on lunch boxes.

ECW talk. The Musketeer credited Taz, Tommy Dreamer and D-Von Dudley for helping him get the job. Johnny Rodz and Dory Funk Jr. also put in good words for him. Dr. Keith talks about is dream for a stable of Musketeers, name-checking Mikey Whipwreck as a potential statement. Keith asks he ever practised sword fighting? Luckily the Musketeer had a fencing friend who taught him the basics of sword swinging shenanigans.

The Musketeer talks about wanting the respect of his locker room peers. Keith asks about the locker room during the ECW TNN period? The Musketeer talks about the exposure from appearing on TNN and on PPV but clamours for more. The Musketeer puts over Tommy Dreamer as being one of the more decent guys in pro-wrestling even dipping into his own pocket each and every week when Paul Heyman's cheques bounced. The Musketeer then talks about Mitch the Umbrella guy and promo time with Simon Diamond and Tommy Dreamer.

The end of ECW is talked about in detail. The Musketeer reveals that a few guys were frustrated because 'maybe they were a little behind in pay,' and that many of them thought that ECW was just on a brief hiatus. Musketeer is happy for the guys that got picked up by WWE and talks about himself having to return to the 'real world.' Keith asks if they ever figured out what Simon Diamond's problem was? Musketeer then WORKS the doctor.

Musketeer is now a personal trainer but has wrestled since for Stampede Wrestling and talks about his Hardcore Homecoming appearance. Musketeer says he is now 220 - 230 and dreams of being in TNA or WWE one day although doesn't specify if his new body is wellness friendly or not. Musketeer says he is not the WUW Heavyweight Champion of the WORLD and talks of his defence against the ECW Zombie. The Musketeer then talks about the REAL tables and chairs because concussions are cool.

The Musketeer masturbates over the reaction at Hardcore Homecoming before putting over The Sandman for being such a cool guy to the lesser paid talent and more importantly as one hell of a chess player. Check out www.wuwonline.com or listen to the interview for an email address to be able to book The Musketeer.

Ted 'The Trailer' McNaylor

Dr. Keith welcome Ted The Trailer to the internet. 'This is the first of my life,' Ted declares. Keith asks about Ted's Chico hate. Ted says it stems from an issue of Figure Four Weekly where Bryan Alvarez made a dastardly claim that Ted The Trailer was small and had no muscles as his MySpace profile states that his body type is athletic. Ted The Trailer calls Bryan wicked names such as coward, chicken and that he has a yellow stripe on his back. Keith asks about the fund to bring Chico to Derby City Wrestling. Ted The Trailer has thus far raised $4.16 before the take out.

Keith asks about Ted's Derby City alumni; Nine-Fingers Dewey who is the muscled one and Adam Revolver who is the 'educamated' one. Ted The Trailer was inspired by pro-wrestling greats: Hulk Hogan, The Ultimate Warrior, Jake The Snake, Lance Cade and Trevor Murdoch. Keith asks if, instead of a pro-wrestling bout, he and Chico could have an arm-wrestling contest or a pose down to show off his athletic frame. Ted says that would be too easy. Ted talks about 'his woman' and that Bryan has crossed the line in saying that he might come down to Derby City just for her.

Through Keith's knowledge of trailers and trailer boys, he has yet to come across a ten-wide trailer that Ted The Trailer hopes to possess. Keith then asks about Ted's spelling bee skills and whether Ted ever considered testing his skills on a higher level? Ted says no as he only speaks American and not any of those foreign languages.

Promo time ~ YAY! 'Chico, I know you feel safe hiding behind your little internet show, your little newsletter. Chico, I got a little challenge for you. Why don't you step out of your little comfort zone, why don't you come down to DCW, I'm here every single Thursday Chico, when're you gonna come down? I'm gonna be waiting for ya.' Splendid interview finishing with Keith recommending the cheaper option of sending down a greyhound for Bryan Alvarez and Ted talking about his disappointment at not being Mr. McMahon's son due to the similarity between the names McNaylor and McMahon and setting up a PALPAY account. Check out www.derbycitywrestling.com.

A Year Of Frustration
Tuesday, September 25, 2007

It was roughly one year ago when Claudio Castagnoli smacked Austin Aries in the ribs with his Haliburton ending Aries & Roderick Strong's record setting nine month reign as ROH World Tag Team Champions. Aries thought things couldn't get any worse. Yet that night was only the tip of the iceberg. Now the question has to be asked- how much can one man take?
Aries first met frustration in trying to regain the World Tag Titles. Then Roderick Strong shocked everyone by turning on his partner and friend to start the No Remorse Corps with Davey Richards & Rocky Romero. Satisfaction evaded Aries as he went after revenge on the NRC. Things couldn't get more bleak when Aries was forced to leave ROH for a few months due to a contract situation with another company.
"That was a really tough time," Aries said. "There was nothing I wanted more than to get back in the ROH ring. I was denied my chance to lead The Resilience and help Matt Cross and Erick Stevens grow as wrestlers. I couldn't even get an opportunity to get revenge on Roderick Strong. I was going stir crazy."
Aries hit a crossroads in his life when he was at home. He began to wonder if it was time to look for another career. As Aries began to look at other possibilities, he was given a second chance to return to ROH. When Aries made his triumphant return in June, things couldn't look more positive.
However, the roadblocks didn't stop. Aries battled nagging injuries. While Stevens and Cross scored some wins and showed improvement, The Resilience was unable to even the score with the No Remorse Corps. Then Jack Evans entered the faction war in a big way with the introduction of The Vulture Squad with Evans, Ruckus, Jigsaw & Julius Smokes.
This kind of mental and physical wear and tear can beat a man down. Lesser men would have crumbled and faded away by now. Aries is proving his resilience by taking every obstacle and not just battling past it, but coming back stronger. Aries has the desire to be known as the top athlete in ROH. He is not about to let anything derail him.
"In 2005 I was on top of this company," Aries said. "I know what it takes to be a champion. I know what it takes to be "the man" in a promotion. I feel I'm stronger, smarter and better than I was in 2005. I know I can take that top spot again."
Aries has the drive of a champion. That drive fuels him to overcome every obstacle and comeback stronger each time. Now Aries is petitioning ROH officials for a chance to show he belongs on top. At the same time, Bryan Danielson wants to get back in the World Title picture. These two can both claim to be the "ace" of ROH. Now ROH officials will give these competitors a chance to show who is the true "ace" of ROH as both try to get another ROH World Title shot.
Danielson and Aries will collide in a three match series this Fall. The first Danielson vs. Aries bout has already been signed for 10/5 in Boston. The second one will take place on 10/21 in San Francisco. The final one, if necessary, will occur on 11/2 in Philadelphia. The winner of the series will get a ROH World Title shot on 11/3 in Manhattan. Aries will get an opportunity to finally get revenge on Roderick Strong when they collide in a singles match as part of the pay-per-view taping on 10/6 in Edison, NJ.
"Now that's what I want," Aries said. "Edison, that's where I get my revenge on Roderick Strong. Then my focus is on the World Title. Bryan and I have had some battles in the past. We are both better wrestlers since the last time we fought. I know I have to be at the top of my game and I'm sure Bryan feels that he has to be at the top of his. This is why I got into wrestling. This is the kind of competition I want."
Aries knows the road is about to get even tougher. The prize at the end of it is the World Title. He has had to get past injuries, feuds and politics. Lesser men would have walked away by now. Aries is just getting started. He is determined not to let anything stop him.

Dr. Keith Lipinski Show Recap (ROHtastic Edition with Gabe Sapolsky & Nigel McGuinness)
By Brian Cooper of BigVanVader.com

Gabe Sapolsky Recap
Keith begins by asking the all-important question: who won the squad off at the Request Is Earned PPV between Tank Toland and Sara Del Ray? Gabe refuses to divulge such information and hints that it might still be going on. "That's tremendous" adds a delighted Doctor who's money is on Del Ray. Keith then asks if the purpose of the PPV's is to appeal to the die-hard ROH fans or in attracting new fans to the product? Gabe answers with a bit of both. Gabe admits that there isn't much indication at present about how the PPV's are positively affected business although there has been some up-swing.
The Doctor asks if there will be a three hour pay-per-view down the line? Gabe replies that he is happy working with the two. Onto Morishima, Keith asks about the 25 August defense at the Manhattan Center against Bryan Danielson. Gabe reminds Keith that it might be Claudio or Albright defending against Danielson in a glorious display of kayfabe. Gabe says Bryan is holding up great with his shoulder since being back. ROH in Japan wasn't even in Gabe's wildest dreams a few years ago, gladly Gabe doesn't parlay what was.
Keith compares the Japanese and American crowds, Gabe says that you can't compare the two. Gabe was impressed with the more women and children than is synomynous in the States. Gabe goes on to say that their are less Japanese fans that try to get themselves over then their American counterparts. Gabe then compares the Japanese fans to a movie-goer. The Doctor demands Go Shiozaki in the US. Gabe says he will work on Shiozaki and numerous other guys for 2008. A technical fault leads to a must-hear "hello, hello" by the good Doctor and one in return by the booker-man. Gabe owns up to marking-out in Japan.
Onto Mike Quackenbush. Gabe puts over the Chikara guys and the relationship between ROH and Chikara, and scheduling permitting, ROH fans should see more of Quackenbush in 2008. Gabe says that Cary Silkin is PISSED that he is giving away $10,000 at the impending Tag Team tournament. Onto the UK, Gabe confirms that the October show won't be going ahead but hopes to sort out a new date very soon.
Moving onto contracts, Gabe confirms that twenty ROH guys are under contract although he doesn't answer Keith's health insurance question.
Gabe says that he isn't really actively looking for any new talent. What other wrestling does Gabe watch? Gabe says he doesn't have much free-time but is always up to date with Dragon Gate and Pro-Wrestling NOAH. What would Gabe be doing if ROH had gone out of business during the Perverted-Justice.com scandal? Gabe replies that he'd probably be a cab driver as he'd always like to get behind a wheel. Gabe puts over the FIP product and suggests people to check out some FIP action. Keith asks if we're going to see Necro Butcher in ROH again anytime soon? Gabe replies that he is happy with Necro Butcher in FIP.
Keith asks about the Earthquake and Typhoon in Japan (the actual natural disasters rather then the WWE Team of Lore). Gabe replies that it was the other side of the island although he felt the tremors. On the Straight-Shootin' Series, "We have nothing lined up at the moment." How would Gabe like fans to remember Ring Of Honor in 2007? Gabe says simply as a year of growth. The two the both agree that the Briscoes are the greatest tag team in the World. Gabe finishes by giving an update on Kobashi and says never say never on MISAWA IN ROH! Check out http://www.rohwrestling.com

Nigel McGuinness Recap
Nigel begins by showing some ROH love and talks of the first PPV. He tells the good Doctor when he was out-and-about in New York with Roderick Strong and Colt Cabana how a kid asked only for his autograph. Keith asks about Jonny Fairplay in ROH as seen on VH1 and the Supercard of Honor II show. Nigel says he had no problems with Fairplay although he has a bit of an ego. Keith asks about the pressure before headlining in Japan against Morishima. Nigel says he felt a lot of pressure for match quality. Nigel talks about the Japanese crowd and their "HORI SHIT" chant. Keith is most intrigued what match-ups and moves led the fans to chant Hori Shittings.
More Natural Disaster talk, Nigel talks about his experiences from the nineteenth (!) floor of his hotel. Nigel says he has done five or six NOAH tours at present. Keith asks about the Takayama KICK TO THE HEAD. Nigel says that Takayama could've taken him at any moment and the kicks hurt. On NOAH workers he would love to come to the states, Nigel would like to see Ricky Marvin who he puts over as being one of the greatest. Nigel says that Too Cold Scorpio was the guy who gave him the best advice in Japan.
Keith asks if he should call Nigel King Nigel after wearing the King Of Europe Cup? Nigel talks about wrestling for Brian Dixon and how he didn't progress al that much wrestling for him. Keith asks about Nigel's Observer comments about working for WWE and more importantly his Ultimate Warrior face-paint and ULTIMATE WARRIOR PANTS. Nigel talks about how he enjoys ROH; the pay, the schedule, and freedom to have great matches but says no-one should turn down a million dollar guaranteed contract. Onto TNA, Nigel doesn't see him getting revenge against Shark Boy anytime soon, going further into his TNA dealings.
Dr. Keith asks about wrestling Morishima with Nigel saying how much better looking he is than the ROH World Champion. Nigel says he has had three horrible concussions in his career and talks of hiding his vomit down the plughole after the Danielson hour match so no-one knew how bad-shape he was in. On the PPV match with Danielson, Nigel says Danielson has modified his style and is "more-to-the- point." What wrestling does Nigel McGuiness watch today? Nigel name-checks Kenta Kobashi, Marty Jones and Fit Finlay as well as Steve Austin.
Nigel says his injuries are holding out reasonably well but says he ignored advice to have injections into his shoulder. Nigel then lists numerous other recent injuries that have occurred inside the ring. Keith asks what Nigel thinks of Kevin Thorn copying the Tower of London? Nigel jokes that it's more like the Dungeons of London and repeats the old imitation line. Book talk. Nigel likens his book to the Chris Jericho book in telling his origins as a pro-wrestler. Keith asks when he can read the book? "When it's published!" Nigel then talks about the screenplay with pop star Kylie Minogue in mind?!
Briscoe talk. Nigel can see the Briscoes doing for the tag titles what Samoa Joe did to the singles title and calls them "Good, honest people." Keith then imagines a glorious community of Briscoes. On the future, Nigel talks about wanting to
wrestle the likes of Danielson, Morishima, Brent Albright, Roderick Strong and Austin Aries. Pro Wrestling Guerrilla talk as he will be working their incredible looking BOLA tournament and debuting for the group. On his first round match. "It'll be a pleasure to lariat him in the face," McGuinness says of Rocky Romero (note, now Austin Aries in quite the dandy match) Nigel finishes by giving Dr. Keith sight-seeing tips for his forthcoming trip to Blighty. Congressional Inquiry

July 30, 2007

The drugs in pro-wrestling story got a lot more interesting late last week. Congress of the United States, as part of their ongoing investigation into illegal use of steroids and other drugs in sports, has request WWE provide the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform with copies of their current and past drug testing policies, copies of all test results, and any other related documents and communications the company has had concerning drugs and or drug related deaths in the industry.

This is, to say the least, HUGE. The document I read was 7 pages and covers every possible drug or health related document or communication WWE has ever made. It also states WWE or WWF so they are intending to go back at least 7 years. From my understanding this is only a “request” and WWE doesn’t have to comply, but I would assume that if WWE did not cooperate pressure would be on to subpoena them and get these documents anyway. I’m not a lawyer so I don’t know if they would be able to get a subpoena, but from a public relations stand point, I would think WWE is going to have to comply with the request, to avoid looking guilty of trying to cover something up.

With all the Heat put on WWE following the Benoit family deaths, and their insistence that their wellness policy is working, refusing to submit documents to back up those claims are going to look very suspicious. As much as I feel that the Benoit tragedy and drug use in pro-wrestling are, for the most part, unrelated this inquiry could really shake up the industry.

Regardless of the end result of this investigation, assuming that it does take place, this industry is likely going to be changed forever. No one’s closet is completely skeleton free, and with the cloud of secrecy the wrestling industry is used to being under, having outsiders looking into WWE’s closets is going to be a very hard pill for them to swallow. With a publicly traded company perception and public image is very important so any dirt or even perceived dirt that gets dug up could have a profound impact on stock prices, sponsorship deals, and or TV ratings.

I think one of the toughest questions WWE will be facing is why testing slackened off or outright disappeared between the introduction of strict testing following Vince McMahon’s indictment for steroid distribution in late 1993 (he was acquitted of ALL charges) and the introduction of WWE’s current Wellness program, which was introduced in 2006 after Eddie Guerrero’s death. There is almost a 10-year span between the two policies where I don’t believe WWE did any testing. There may have been some testing during that time but certainly nothing like what was done initially in 1993 or currently now in 2007, and I can tell you first hand I was never tested, or even heard of anyone getting tested during my 5+ years with the company.

It should be a very interesting next few months. I hope this inquiry ends up doing the industry and those who work in it more good than harm, but only time will tell. I think public scrutiny is the only way to decisively make a difference and clean up whatever drug problems exist in the industry. Cleaning up these problems may end up hurting the business in the short term, but if it saves lives or improves the health of the boys in the long term, it could end up a huge positive for the industry.

There is of course the possibility that like the past inquires into baseball; absolutely nothing productive will come out of this. When all is said and done, much like in baseball where Barry Bonds is still hitting those home runs, steroid enhanced physiques, may continue to dominate wrestling, and a lot of time and money will be spent accomplishing nothing.

Here’s hoping that is not the case and something productive happens,
Lance Storm

King to visit Akron in the Raw

WWE's talented Booker thrived on a tag team, now shows much flair working alone in ring

By Scott Fishman Miami Herald

Published on Thursday, Aug 02, 2007

After taking off time to recuperate from nagging injuries, World Wrestling Entertainment's King Booker left the SmackDown! kingdom with Queen Sharmell to invade Raw.

He was sent to Raw during the show's 3-hour draft special. A talented wrestler who made a very successful transition from prominent tag-team glory to singles' stardom, he is ready to conquer new quests.

''I'm a soldier,'' said Booker, who will battle Jeff Hardy when WWE presents the Biggest Party of Summer at the James A. Rhodes Arena in Akron.

''Just give me my gun, and I'll go into battle. It doesn't matter if I'm on Raw or SmackDown! I really don't want to be on ECW. If I got drafted to ECW, I probably would have resigned to be honest.

''Being drafted back to Raw is a great thing. I'm looking forward to going in there and just continuing what I do, and that's wrestle, performing and giving the crowd what they want to see.''

At 42, King Booker has done just about everything he set to accomplish and more. However, having his off-screen wife and on-screen Queen Sharmell by his side has reignited the competitive fire within him.

''Her and I are a team,'' said Booker, who married Sharmell, a former Nitro Girl dancer and performer for World Championship Wrestling, in 2005. ''Business is always business, and personal is always personal. When we are at our job, we know we have a job to do. We do it, leave it at the job and don't take it home with us.

''When we're at home, it's totally different. It is from a different standpoint.''

Along with his constant road schedule, Booker helps run a wrestling school with his brother and former tag-team partner Stevie Ray near his home in Houston. The training academy runs events under the Pro Wrestling Alliance banner.

Students not only obtain needed and necessary experience in front of crowds but also watch first-hand WWE superstars like Matt Hardy, past superstars like Too Cold Scorpio and TNA's Team 3D (formerly ECW and WWE's Dudley Boys).

King Booker wants to give back.

''Wrestling took me places I never imagined,'' said Booker, the youngest of eight children who didn't let growing up in a rough neighborhood deter him from his goals. ''I never dreamed of being a wrestler. It was just something that worked out for me. I was just a neighborhood kid and nobody around was wrestling.

''It was like a hobby and an escape where I could be a different person at the moment. It wasn't about the money. It was just about having fun. Next thing you know some people call me and offer me a contract. Then it became a job, and then it became a career.

That is the way you have to look at it because you never know where it's going to take you.''

Booker's career began to take off in WCW as a member of Harlem Heat with his brother Stevie Ray. The two enjoyed 11 reigns as world tag team champions.

Women's wrestling trailblazer Sherri Martel, born Sherri Russell, helped lead the charge as their manager during successful times. Martel, a WWE Hall of Famer, passed away at age 49 on June 15.

''It's a tragic event,'' said Booker, who gave away Sherri, the bride, at her wedding. ''My mother passed just about the same age as Sherri.

''She was great. She was the catalyst and the one who made Harlem Heat who we were. She made us bigger than life. It was like she was my sister. We called her Sister Sherri, and that is pretty much what she was to us. We know Sherri is in a better place.''

As the superstar moves along to another phase of his career, the King Booker persona remains.

''I don't ever think I'll be Booker T again,'' said the king, who began his monarchy by winning the 2006 King of the Ring. ''I'm King Booker in the ring, and the people want to see me as King Booker. That character has really taken off. It has really gotten over the top that I think we're just going to keep on rolling with it and see where it goes. It's always good to have royalty around.''

Also at the Akron event, John Cena and Randy Ortonwill battle in the WWE Championship Match; Lashley will take on Umaga in a Special Challenge Match and Paul London and Brian Kendrick will fight Lance Cadeand Trevor Murdochin in a World Tag Team Championship Match.

Candice and Mickie James will face Melina and Jillian in a RAW Diva Tag Team Match; Santino Marella will take on Snitsky; Val Venis will battle Sly (Maryse) and Cody Rhodes will fight William Regal.

Those who can't get enough of King Booker can listen to his radio show Tea Time with King Booker online at the 790 Sports Animal Web site.

July 30th: Bryan Danielson captained the team of Austin Aries, Matt Sydal and Jay Briscoe in a wild $10,000 Tag Team Challenge last Saturday. It will be McGuinness vs. Hero under Pure Wrestling Rules meaning each athlete gets 3 rope breaks to stop a pin or submission attempt, there will be a 20 count on the floor and no closed fists.
