Back to the Future Part 2

Hi everybody!

First off, I would like to thank Mark Danger for the excellent idea of reviewing old school wrestling. I am in complete agreement with everything that was said about wrestling today.

That being said, I will now tell you what old school wrestling I will be reviewing. I decided to go with WWF King of the Ring 1993. Why this show you ask? I wanted to do an early 90s WWF shows to compliment Mark's choice and since I still had the very first King of the Ring on VHS I figured it would work. I will do play by play on all the King of the Ring tournament matches and the Hogan/Yokozuna match.

Without further ado, I present to you:
WWF King of the Ring 1993 from Dayton, Ohio.
Your play by play people for this show are "Macho Man" Randy Savage, Jim Ross and Bobby "The Brain" Heenan.

1st Round King of the Ring match: Bret "Hitman" Hart vs. Razor Ramon. I love how Howard Finkel prounounced Razor Ramon.
Ramon trying to play mind games with Bret but Bret answers with a headlock then sends Ramon to the ground and applies an armbar. Ramon gets back up and hits a few moves before Bret locks in an armbar again. Heenan had a nice line where he complimented Bret on his wrestling abilty but immediately said "but I hate him." According to Savage, finalists actually make it to the finals. Exchange of control in this match until Ramon throws Bret into the corner who rams his shoulder into the post. Fallaway slam gets Ramon 2 and a powerslam gets him another nearfall. Bret gets a second wind and is hitting several powerful moves and nearfall for each one. Heenan: "You want something close, go shave your face." Ramon powers back, tries for the Razor's Edge but Bret slides down and gets a small package for 2. Finish is Bret reversing a suplex to get the pin and advance.

Video package of Mr. Hughes hitting Undertaker with his own urn.

1st Round King of the Ring match: Mr. Perfect vs. Mr. Hughes.
Hughes is in complete control of Perfect with Perfect's offense having no effect. They do a Picture in Picture with Bret backstage saying who he would like to face. Hughes misses a big move and Perfect takes the fight to him. Finish is Mr. Hughes getting DQed after hitting Perfect with Undertakers urn.

Backstage with Gene Okerlund interviewing Yokozuna and Mr. Fuji. Yoko promises that Hogan will go down.

1st Round King of the Ring match: "Hacksaw" Jim Duggan vs. "Bam Bam" Bigelow. Or should I say "Bam! Bam!" vs. "HOOOOOO!!!!!!"
Duggan knocks Bigelow down first then has fun with the crowd until Bigelow gets back in. Duggan injures some ribs when whipped into a corner and Bigelow capitalizes. Duggan moves out of the way of a headbutt, tries for a slam but doesn't have enough power then breaks a bearhug by biting Bigelow. Duggan finally slams Bigelow but misses the tackle which allows Bigelow to hit the flying headbutt for the win.

Backstage with The Smoking Guns and The Steiner Brothers. Steiners and KIp James looked so innocent back then.

1st Round King of the Ring match: Lex Luger vs. Tatanka.
Luger tries to jumpstart the match but Tatanka gets control. PiP with Bigelow saying he wants to face Tatanka. Heenan informs us that one of Bam Bam's relatives was Buffalo Bill Bigelow. Luger now in control and gets a nearfall. Luger was showing off which allows Tatanka to get rollup for 2 but Luger keeps control. Tatanka gets a small package and sunset flip for 2. Tatanka "hulks up", gets a series of nearfalls then misses a high risk move. Finish is a time-limit draw which gives Bigelow a buy. Luger blindsides Tatanka then leaves.

Okerlund is in the back interviewing both Bret and Perfect. Gene stirs the pot by saying he thinks Bret said Perfect was an easier opponent. There was also a little bit of "My dad can beat your dad."

Semi-Final King of the Ring match: Bret "Hitman" Hart vs. Mr. Perfect.
A flurry of wrestling moves with Bret gaining control with a headlock, hitting a crucifix pin for 2 then back to the headlock. Perfect fighting back and uses dirty tricks to gain control. Perfect pushes Bret off the apron onto the floor and Bret lands in such a way that he hurts his knee. Perfect gets a few nearfalls but Bret catches him on the top turnbuckle and hits a superplex for 2 then applies a Figure Four but Perfect makes it to the ropes. Perfect grabs Bret's hair and throws him across the ring then applies a sleeperhold but Bret gets to the ropes. Bret fights back with a big forearm then gets a series of nearfalls. Bret tries for the Sharpshooter but Perfect grabs his injured hand. Perfect tries for a Perfect Plex but Bret blocks it and tumble outside. Both men get back in and Bret reverses a small package for the win.

Gene backstage with Hulk Hogan and Jimmy Hart. Usual rambling Hogan promo.

WWF World Heavyweight Championship: Hulk Hogan w/Jimmy Hart vs. Yokozuna w/Mr. Fuji.
Yokozuna in firm control. Hogan gains control, punches Yoko in the corner then tries to bodyslam him but can't do it yet. Yoko tries for a bodysplash but Hogan moves out of the way. Hogan then runs at Yoko but gets wrapped into a bearhug. Hebner does lifts Hogan's arm twice but he keeps it up the 3rd time and Yoko knocks him back down then hits a belly to belly suplex but it's Hulking up time! Hogan punches Yoko 9 times, big boots him 3 times but Yoko kicks out of the legdrop. Fuji gets on the arpon to distract Hebner as a cameraman gets on another side of the apron, asks Hogan to come over then hits him with a fireball. Yoko leg drops Hogan for the win then does the butt drop post match.

Terry Taylor asks how Perfect feels about losing his match but Perfect says he's not gonna talk about it.

Now over to Gene interviewing IC Champ Shawn Michaels with Dr. Nash behind them.

The Steiner Brothers & The Smoking Gunns vs. Money, Inc. & The Headshrinkers. Finish is Billy Gunn getting the win via a small package on Dibiase. The Steiners never got tagged in.

Gene is backstage with Yoko, Fuji and then-President Jack Tunney. Fuji talks about the win.

WWF Intercontinental Championship: Crush vs. "The Heartbreak Kid" Shawn Michaels. Finish is Double Doinks coming out to distract Crush which allows HBK to hit SCM for the win.

Gene in the back with Bam Bam. He says he's going to get the job done.

Final King of the Ring match: Bret "Hitman" Hart vs. "Bam Bam" Bigelow.
Bret tries to go after Bigelow right away but Bigelow turns it around, picks Bret up and throws him over the top rope. Bigelow brings him back in, gets a nearfall then hammers on him some more. Bret kicks out of a pin attempt then gets thrown outside through the middle rope. Bigelow comes out but Bret fighst back. Bret jumps off the apron but Bigelow catches him, rams his back into the post then slams him on the outside. Luna Vachon runs out, hits Bret with a chair then leaves. Bigelow rolls Bret back in, hits the flying headbutt and gets a pin. Before Bigelow can officially be announced Hebner comes out and gets the match to continue. Bret counters a backbreaker into a sleeperhold but lets go, throws Bigelow to the outside then dives at him. Finish is Bret victory rolling Bigelow to become the first King of the Ring.

Bret goes over to the "Coronation Ceremony" immediately and gets the robe, scepter and crown. Gene proclaims Bret King of the Ring but Jerry "The King" Lawler comes out and tells Bret to kiss his feet. Bret starts a "Burger King" chant and Lawler attacks Bret with his scpeter, destroys Bret's crown and uses everything in the coronation area on him.

Final Thoughts: This had more wrestling on it than anything you see on TV or PPV today.
